Just saw the film on its preview showing tonight, and I must say I wasn't expecting much after a disspointing summer of Indian cinema from the over hyped Rajinikant's BABA to the poor and expensive technical values seen in Awara Pagal Deewana & Mujse Dosti Karoge.

However I was surpised and found myself enjoying the film from start to finish. The film has excellent action sequences that are proberly the best shot on Indian celloiud in ages (no gimmck special effects just well crafted kicks and punches with some wire-fu).

RUN is a masala film with top quality songs by Vidyasagar, excellent prodcution/technical values, decent performances from the cast (Mahadevan image does change from romantic boy to action hero), and Vivek's comedy for a change does provide some great laughter. Finally a film Tamil cinema can be proud off!

The story is typical and predicable, but the handling by Director N. Lingusawmy is fresh. Prehaps my only complaint would be of the new actress who looks too ordinary and lacks the glamour/beauty of Kiran, Simran or Shena.

Recommend viewing!

Also a bonus point was that I got to see a 5 minute trailer of the upcoming Priyadharshan film Leesa Lesa, and that too looks quite promising. The music by Harris Jayaraj that was heard on the trailer is sure to rival that of A.R. Rahman, that's how good it was!

Can you tell us more about Priyadarshan's new film - ie starcast, story etc?

That's good to hear, Sunny. I always wait for DVDs of new films to come out to watch them since I have to drive 40 minutes to the Indian movie theater. I just might drive out there for this one.

Looking forward to an Ayngaran special edition (hint, hint).

Run will be releasing on DVD/VHS/VCD within a month, and since this film is a high budget film, cinema ticket prices will be quite astromonical (similar to BABA's £15 adult ticket price)

There won't be a special edition of Run, but there will be a two disc verison of BABA due out in JAN 02. But if you can't wait that long then you can purchase the one disc version by the end of this month. :)

Is the two disc set of Baba going to be a proper one with subtitled features, or are all the features going to be in Tamil only wihtout subtitles?

in other news, how is the Mani Rathnam movie with Nandita Das and Madhavan? I know it's not an action movie, but is it anywhere as good as Alai Payuthe, Dil Se, and Bombay? Any news on the DVD of this movie?

I guess you mean "Kannathil Muthamittal" (A Kiss on the Cheek). I thought it was an interesting story. The performances were pretty good, though I had a hard time believing Madhavan as a father of two children (I think it was two, but the main girl must have been 11 or 12 years old). However, by combining two important issues, adoption and the fighting in Sri Lanka, I felt that neither issue was given quite the attention it should have gotten. Mani Ratnam's forte is putting smaller stories against the backdrop of bigger conflicts and he usually does it well, but I think it fell just a bit short. The song "Sundari" was unnecessary, but I guess Ratnam still feels he has to put some commercial element in his films to attract crowds, even though this usually hurts the film. Technical values, including cinematography and sound design, are top-notch. I didn't like KM as much as "Alai Payuthey" but it is a good film. Speaking of which, when is "Saathiya," the Hindi remake of AP, releasing?

Interlaced or not, aren't Ayngaran DVDs some of the best Indian DVDs out on the market? Especially when compared to Eros, YRF, VideoSound.

I take it you dont buy any Indian DVDs then? :bangbang:

BHASKAR =
The Mani Ratnam film Kanathil Muthamittal is prehaps one of the best Indian film to release last year, and is seen as Ratnam's most misunderstood work due to the subject matter on the confiict in Sri-Lanka, twined with the story of parental love for thier adopted child (that is shown in a new light on Indian cinema when it is read between the lines) .

Dragun R2 =
I thought Madavan fitted the role quite well, he did put on some weight and mannerisms for the film. It was more real then a middle aged SRK playing a college boy in KKHH!! He is very different in this film and deserves commendations for his role, as does Simran. Ratnam proves he can make commercial actors perform just as good as theatrical actors.

I also don't think Ratnam tries to make his films commercial viable or box office sucesses for the big screen. If he did he wouldn't be making the type of films he is making. I think he has had more flops then hits at the box-office in India, which I find shocking as I consider him to be amongst the best Indian film director with the likes of Bimal Roy, Guru Dutt, Hirishkesh Mukerjee etc..

He works with quite a low budget in all of his films (bar Dil Se...) its only the cast and crew who take a phat pay cut to work with the director.

The song Sundari was a way to help audiences chracterise in thier mind what kind of girl Amuda was and how she behaves in her little world. It also helps us to understand that in a sense she is slightly a spolit little brat who does things her way. This justifies her actions later on in the film.

SKNATH=
It really doesn't matter if the transfer is progressive or Interlaced. Both can have its positive and negative attributes. I would rather have an excellent non-anamorphic 1.85:1 interlaced DVD then a poor anamorphic 2.35:1 progresive DVD.

IMHO I consider the recent interlaced Ayngaran DVD of Ezhulmalai to be one of the top Indian DVDs made. The quality simply floorered me and proved that this technology has so much more to offer then what we speculate on. I would go as far to say its better then CT's DVD of Laggan, which was done on progressive and made from a high definition master!

I saw Run this evening and I liked it. I missed a few minutes at the beginning, though. What happened before Siva's mom had all that stuff packed for him? That's when I entered the theater.

We really should have seen Atul Kulkarni in more scenes. He's always compelling to watch. I thought the movie took too much time to reveal why Priya (the heroine) was avoiding Siva (Madhavan), but that is a minor quibble. The action was good, though I wish the climax was a bit longer and had a little more action. The cinematography (Jeeva, I believe) is beautiful and the songs are good. But what I didn't like was the continuation of having some annoyingly high pitched voice dubbed in for the heroine! This is something that has plagued Tamil cinema for a long time and it always sounds stupid.

Vivek's comedy is hilarious. It's extremely funny how the bad things happening to him just kept piling on. And the humor depends mostly on the situations rather than wordplay, so it would be funny even if you need subtitles.

Now the bad part of my experience: The theater didn't play it in DTS or DD. They used the optical track, which was probably mono, since I noticed no directional effects. The print had 9 or 10 black vertical lines throughout much of the film. Otherwise it was a sharp print. The projector stopped a few minutes into the climax and I had to go get someone to start it up again. OTOH, there were only three other people in the theater besides me, so I guess that balances out the print problems.

DragunR2 you only missed the first song "Theradi Veethiyiley", which stars as soon as the credits at the begining end.

I enjoyed the action scenes, especially in the subway. It was cool.

Its a pity you didn't see it in DTS as the soundtrack during the fight scenes was phat! Can't wait for the DVD should be coming around in Jan as the film continues to RUN on cinema in the far east and in India.
