I have just finished reading this book, Rachel Dwyer's Yash Chopra and just wanted to alert other fans of Yash Chopra's about the books recent publication. It is an excellent companion to his films and highly readable filled with production history from Chopra's archives, personal interviews with him his cast and crew. Also it is on sale at Amazon for 30% off the cover price. http://www.amazon.com/exec....details The book also goes into scholarly discourse on the 'Yash Chopra style' and the history of audience reaction to each of his films, but it is lightly done and easy to digest. This book is worth buying for all Yash Chopra fans.
There are about 100 photos in the book and a dozen in color. Which are incredibly hard to look at because they show the 'lost' color and glory of what the original strike prints must have looked like from the master negatives.
(*posting photo for first time hope it works) My scan does not do justice to the actual print in the book My Webpage
It is great that an institution like the British Film Institute has published a book solely about one Indian film director as opposed to just a general all inclusive book about 'Bollywood'. It is as if for the first time 'Bollywood' film is being taken seriously by the international film community. That the academic world is acknowledging 'Bollywood' as a valid 'art form' worthy of preservation and study hopefully will help to inspire the Indian film industry to take better care of their films longer than two weeks after the initial ticket receipts come in and to make better transfers to DVD (wishful thinking here). If only Yash Chopra himself would come to realize that quality transfers of his film archive would not only benefit him monitarily (more people would buy his DVDs) but would also help to preserve his legacy as an artist.
The BFI has also published a small book on the making of Mother India that is really good. And some time in the next couple of months they are publishing a book on the making of DDLJ that I am really waiting for. http://www.bfi.org.uk/bookvid/books/cat ... bookid=400 http://www.bfi.org.uk/bookvid/books/cat ... bookid=355
