Any idea of the actual lenght of the film for the dvd. I remember reading something about one of the pirates in India which had some extended scence worked into the film, just wondering if these "missing scenes" will make it into the final dvd.

What about the Cannes footage, which is non exisitent on the Curtain Raiser.

Devdas Multi-Media CD Released

By: Planet Bollywood Special Correspondant
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

While running succesfully in theatres worldwide, over a month since its release Devdas is still making waves.

This past week Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai and producer Bharat Shah launched an official CD-Rom for the film. This is the first time a CD-Rom has been launched for a film, especially after the film´s release. Usually, such a thing would be released prior to the film´s release to promote it.

The CD-Rom contains over a hundred wallpapers, movie bits, music clips, interviews etc. The CD was released in India.

Devdas has just started playing in here, which is the first indicator that the DVD will not come out for months! Also it is playing now in ENGLISH theatres!

Secondly, in the bottom of the ad for Devdas, it says (summing it up):

Eros Intl. is the sole owner of the copyright for this film in USA and Canada. Authorized videocassette and DVD versions of this motion picture have not been released by Eros Intl. In interests of customer satisfaction, Eros Intl. urges consumers to boycott unauthorized VHS, DVD, and VCD reproductions of this film.

Basically, they are doing a release similar to Monsoon Wedding. So, then it leads me to believe, since i think that Devdas will be able to duplicate the response to Monsoon Wedding as an indie film, that the DVD will not come till atleast the END OF THIS YEAR.

Considering that this DVD would then also be sold in ROGERS, BLOCKBUSTER, ETC., Eros would HAVE to do a good quality release of the movie.

Cross our fingers: there might be a GREAT movie transfer in for us! Maybe similar to the pics Nazir put up!! :)

dograk, you mentioned one time that you are from Ottawa (weekdays). Is Devdas running in English theatres in Ottawa as well??

Rana

P.S.
Nazir pics are at least @ 1024 x 768 res. Only HD DVD will be able to achieve that.

rana..that's EXACTLY what i am talking about - starting today, Devdas will be playing 3 times per day at WORLD EXCHANGE PLAZA and at AMC THEATRES in Ottawa!!

wohoo!

the ad and the Movie Review (got 4 stars) is in today's paper (Ottawa Citizen - Arts Page)...

awaaz - like you, i really want the dvd...but i am willing to wait time, if, as it seems, Eros finally gets a GREAT JOB on the movie!

anways, to elaborate on what i said. Since it has started its English Cinema run, similar to Monsoon Wedding, (and since i think it could have a similar hit run), then it will not stop playing for atleast another month...-> that gets us to the end of September/start October..

so Eros will have basically 6 months if they release the movie in December ( which is when i believe they will)..they have all the time/resources to do a FINE FINE job on it..-> and plus since it would be in rental stores too, then they would the the resources to do it too!

so cross your fingers!

wohoo!

I saw DEVDAS at AMC Toronto. There were hardly 20 people in the show. I wonder how can cineplexes survive with as few as 2 customers per show and Indian theatres and Indian screenings need 300 to 500 per show to screen a movie??

Situation with Monsoon Wedding, and other Hollywood/ Indian movies is no different. I have seen some big budget Hollywood movies where I and only one or two more couples is all that were in the theatre.

its really simple:

the big cineplexes are all part of a chain..such as for example, cineplex odeon/AMC are i believe owned by loews..

when they are getting the movie prints they pay a fee, let's say 1 million. if they pay 1 million, they only have to get 1 million from ALL OF THEIR cinemas. so i believe it evens out.

compare that to indian movies. if the right is 40G, they have to get that from the ONE theatre ALONE!, since they normally don't have more than 1 theatre...then that is why they need to get a lot of customers.

take the recent shows of Indian movies in MAYFAIR (Ottawa). he's paying lets say 10G for the movie right from it's distributor. At the same time, he's also paying MAYFAIR a fee for renting the theatre. then he ALSO pays NASA, AIM, Carleton's Radio station, India Food Centre, etc. a fee for advertising the movie - or he might give them i cut( which is what the nasa fellow says he gets...)

the tickets are $10. if his total costs are 20G, he needs to get 2000 tickets sold. but he only runs the shows on TWO DAYS. so that's why he needs 400-500 people per show. and that too, to BREAK EVEN.

...basically, the margins are very low in indian movie theatres. however, feel free to correct me if i'm wrong..

--> oh, and plz plz let it be a GREAT EROS PRINT (even if it comes at the end of the year!!)!!...

Hi I'm new to the Zulm.net forums.

Regarding the Devdas Official DVD, I got an email from Indiaplaza saying that the Devdas DVD which was due out next week will be coming out on September 13th.

yeah, i've heard september 13th as well..

but the thing is that indiaplaza has been saying "oh, it will come on ____" for more than a month now..

now, considering that Eros has started an English-theatre run of it, I would doubt the september date..

but who knows -P

That's the problem when the distributors expect $10,000 for a weekend (2 shows). Theatre rental is only aprox $1000 for 2 shows.

Chains can survive with just 20 to 40 customers, on the average, per show, doesn't make any sense. Monsoon Wedding has been declared a super hit and the highest grosser of all time among Indian Films. It's attendence record is no different.

This is common in Indian Film Business; High Expectations. Hollywood movies are considered Hit if 40% theatre is full at peak periods and 10% at off peak. Indian Films need 75 % full at peak and 40% full at off peak periods just to break even.

I thought all was a little quiet on the Devdas front, so here's a bit of info to get things started again!!!!

Eros has passed Devdas throught the British censors for a video certificate - could the DVD be releasing very soon?????
