I agree with Dragun on Shyamalan's use of "silent effect". It makes scenes more tense without the background score. Speaking of signs soundtracks, remixes by Paul Oakenfold are available for download (in Mp3 format) at the official site: Here

I thought that the ending was not silly but important because it reflects the whole movie and its theme...nothing is coincedence and faith in god etc etc. its the ending that makes you say..yeah this is what the director is trying to tell us. And in my opinion he has told it well.

I guess I'll just post a warning. Don't go any further unless you've seen the movie.

*SPOILER*

Well, I agree with you on that point. Everything happens for a purpose. Look at how his son survived; because he had an asthma attack, and couldn't inhale the poison gas. And because of the little girl's paranoid habit of not drinking water because it's "contaminated", and Mel Gibson's laziness to clean it up, they saved themselves.
(And, btw, in case anyone was wondering why the aliens didn't get hurt by rain, or by the ocean, it would have to do with the impurities in tap water, hence all the references to "contaminated" water).

*END SPOILER*

SPOILER ALERT!!!
Are you saying that the alien died in the end because the water was infact pure?? Remember the alien dudes did not like any kinda water (contaminated or not)...therefore they didnt make any crop circles near oceans or lakes...so claims Shyamalans character "Roy" in the movie.

I was thinking about the fact that water could kill the aliens yesterday. While at first I thought that was kind of lame, I have a theory that may explain it.

The aliens apparently knew that water was dangerous for them, so they were placing these crop circles in areas not close to huge bodies of water. If you looked at the map of India where the crop circles were found in the film, they were all towards the center of the country. I don't know if this is true of the other countries on the map in the film. What I think the aliens didn't know was that humans had such a things as faucets and taps in their homes to dispense water. Or maybe they didn't know that humans used water at all, which is why the alien that made it into Mel Gibson's house came unprotected. He didn't expect that there would be glasses and glasses of the substance that could kill him (or her, who knows).

No, I'm saying the alien died at the end because the water was filled with standard impurities found in tap water. If it was just standard water, well, then they would've died in rain.

Well there is no mention of aliens ever wondering about in rain or anything so we cannot be clear on that.
On another point, do you guys think the alien comes to Mels house to get revenge for cutting of his fingers or he was just left behind by the others, like mels brother says that he heard on the news that " they had left but left some wounded and dead behind" ??

*Spoiler yet again*

I would say a combination of both. He was left behind because he was wounded, and went to take revenge on mel for cutting off his fingers.

And, regarding rain, they were on earth in 400 cities, for such a long time. You think there would have been rain.

***SPOILERS***

I saw the film a few nights back, and I thought it was great. And I disagree with many of the points you people have been discussing about. I don't think the ending is contrived at all, infact, as strange as it may sound, I thought the use of water at the end of the film was an imagery to reflect the essence of faith, moreso GOD. There are however, a few things which I found to be flawed and too coincidental. One forexample, I felt the character of the boy kid was too smart for his age and without his stange intelligence, could this film have moved forward?

But I really enjoyed this film as a whole, infact, I think Signs is a really scary movie as well, there are about 2-3 parts from the film that really made me jump from my seat, and not many films can do that with me. Shyamalan is without a doubt the master of his game at the present time, Signs reminded me of the kind of suspense Hitchcock would have collaborated in a film. Shyamalan's use of silence in the film really keeps the suspense building and it really made me feel the character(s) onscreen emotions.
