I know I'm risking the wrath of a lot of people (maybe every single Zulmi bar a couple!) but was I the only person that thought Devdas was over the top?

Now before you all start telling me that I'm just slagging the film off to be different, hear me out!

I hate SRK, I think he's a pompous git, but, he's actually put in a decent performance. Like someone said earlier, not much SRK comes across in the performance apart from when he laughs! Aishwarya and Madhuri are also very good, putting in very believable performances. And the music is fantastic.

But..........I thought everything else in the movie was OTT. The opening scene, where SRKs mother finds out Devdas is coming back made me cringe. SLBs direction needed to be better - after Khamoshi and HDDCS, this was disappointing. Small details haven't been taken care of - sure, they spent Rs 50 crore, but couldn't they even get someone who can speak Bengali, so the actors can get the pronunciation right? Kiron Kher's Bengali was ok (probably cos she's done a Bengali film), but most of the rest, especially Aishwarya's, was pathetic! Some of the sets were grand, but I personally thought some just were too............gaudy!!! And how long were Aishwarya's sarees? Whenever she ran anywhere, she had 3 metres of saree behind her!!!

OK, rant over - don't think I'm slagging the film off just for fun!! Some of the scenes were veery good - the ones standing out were Paro meeting her sambhdhan in her husbands house, and some of Madhuri's scenes. It's just that somewhere, I think they got lost in the fact that they were making India's most expensive film, and forgot other things.

"cringe" was the EXACT way i described the opening to people i know.
All the supperting cast besides the three main characters were giving the audience lessons in how to overact.

it removed all feeling of majesty the film could have had.

and the direction was very average... it got a bit better during songs(especially the first).
