All I've heard so far here was that the sound was crap when people have seen Devdas. Although I'll probably be disappointed in the film as a whole, I want to at least see how the songs are picturized. Have any of you seen Devdas with good 5.1 sound?

I saw it at the IMAX theater in Indianapolis and the sound was incredible. I heard none of the problems that were posted here. I know the projectionist and he verified that it was indeed a true Dolby Digital 5.1 track. He said they did not send any DTS discs so they could not run it in DTS. The surround sound was superb....at least to my ears.

I saw some minor flaws in the print, mainly the subtitles going in and out of focus and one reel was a little jittery but this was due to the print itself and not the theater's fault. This guy has been in the biz 30 years and definitely knows what he is doing. Plus, we had a true intermission whereas I've read some theaters are running it straight through.

It's playing one last show this Friday night if anyone in this area is interested.

Jeff

The print probably had good sound. It was the theater that was substandard. So, if you are able to go to a decent theater with good sound capabilities, you should be okay. I watched the songs and behind the scenes from the curtain raiser dvd in my home theater and the sound was fantastic.

I disagree with first part, mrig ji..as i have seen films like YAADEIN, MK, PUKAR,LAGAAN, K3G in the same theatre with excellent sound, so basically it is all eros..f*up prints prob.

2nd part, sound in curtain raiser songs, was excellent, at least thats how we should be hearing in the theatre even if it was proper DD 5.1 only! but it was not even dat! EROS and Bharat bhaii, choron ke chors have cut as much corners of this film, even in theatric release to rake mollah to the max!!! :baaa:  :vangry: :stupid: :bangbang: :ffs:

You could be right, Arsh. The last movie I saw in the theater was Taal about 3 years ago :0 I am spoiled by watching movies in my home theater with good sound. 16th December had excellent sound. The rain scenes were really good as I felt it was raining right next to me! Given this, my expectations for sound quality from Devdas was high and I was disappointed by watching it in the theater. I was not surrounded by the sound. The sound was coming only from the front. That is why I thought the theater was to blame. Are you telling me that Eros has some good prints and some bad ones? :bangbang: :baaa:

Jeff (the lucky one) seems to have watched it with DD 5.1!

EROS had ALMOST all BAD PRINTS along with DVD PIRATE version presentations in the theatre, wherever they could not rent the theatre and play movie for their own mollah sake!
Whoever did not RENT their theatres to them, got this SHITTY prints or DVD pirate to be presented in the theatres! :baaa: ??? :vangry:  :bangbang:

I know the IMAX theater is running a real print (not a DVD). My friend let me come up into the projection booth and I saw the print with my own eyes right on the platter. It was definitely DD 5.1 as it did drop out and defaulted to regular Dolby Surround for about 10 seconds during the film and then went back to DD 5.1. There was a big difference when it dropped out and I noticed it right away.

Like I said, the print wasn't flawless, but the flaws were minor.

I agree with u Jeff dude, My theatre had real print too, it was not dvd presentation in that particular theatre, but EROS has been doing DVD presentation in small cities too, UNDOUBTEDLY!

Now this particular theatre is possibly equipped with DTS only or without Disc will default to Dolby surround , thats what happened here!

secondally, print has its minor flaws, i agree, some shots appearing, softer out of focus etc1 But nothing major flaws, except terrible sound!
i am 100% positive that earning from ur theatre must be going to EROS direct! :baaa: ;) :vsneaky:

the loews theatre in times square, NYC has a great sound presentation of DEVDAS, but EROS' dark print problems still plague it.
The directionality in the soundtrack was clearly audible in many scenes...

And I watched it at West Bellfort cinema in Houston. By no means, is this is a small city! Houston is showing it in two theaters, the other one being in a funplex theater. I have been to that theater many years ago as well but honestly only remember it as being not that great.

All of you that watched the good quality print, did you see a plug for B4u and http://www.erosentertainment.com right before the movie began? It came after they showed the certificate of release. This is what made me suspicious that I might be watching it on dvd but the colors were good. Atleast the hara rang daala song had the right colors :)

I disagree with the posting about the presentation at the Times Square Loews. While there was some directionality in the surrounds, it was definitely not digital sound. Usually when they show films there, they crank up the volume and you can hear everything pitch perfect. The sound on this particular print was terrible, the highs being way too shrill and harsh plus not enough bass ("K3G" had so much oomph to it that you can feel in your veins). This was the first Bollywood film I've seen there with bad sound (even "Pitaah" was crystal clear). It sounded like the mastering of the soundtrack was deliberately set so high to try and overcompensate for such tinny sound. Now it's possible that they moved it over to another screen on a different date (with not all auditoriums having Dolby Digital? They all have SDDS). Yes, it was VERY dark too.

If u guys are talking about IMAX presentation, it is darker than normal screen! even for a GOOD STANDARD HOLLYWOOD PRINT! but darker on other screens is very much consistent of EROS pirated DVD picture!

seems they did change the screen. the DEVDAS i saw had lots of oomph in the sound; right from the title sequence. ANd it was definitely digital. It was played incredible loud, and stayed crystal clear. heck, i was standing outside during the previous show, and i could clearly here the dialogues in the hallway.

I have heard mixed comments about Devdas theatrical prints. Some have stated excellent print in good theatres and some have reported worst projection. I myself had never seen a film in a theatre worst than it’s VHS or DVD video. But, in case of Devdas, even the pirate DVD (mediocre quality) and it’s VHS copy in SLP speed has a much better picture than what I saw in the theatre.

I have heard of good projection on I-max screens and have also heard of darker projection due to large screen size.

(I have already seen this film in local theatre, on pirate DVD and on VHS) I want to enjoy this beautiful film and am thinking of driving 1000 Km (return) day trip to see this movie on I-max.

Any Suggestions/ Advice??
Any Idea if the I-max theatre (Toronto) will have good screening of DEVDAS??

Thanks.

Rana
