Maybe because the dvd company did not buy the rights for India.

So are there seperate releases in India by other companies?

Jeff yeah... notable examples are the films released under the RK banner...
In the USA they are released under the lousy shit banner called Yashraj Films...
In India they are released under the vastly superior Shemaroo banner. Its illegal for Shemaroo to sell their DVDs here in da Usa. hence u can only get pirated( according to the folks @ yashraj) shemaroo dvds (aka replicated Shemaroo DVDs)

i think its just common sense that the same company cannot release a dvd all over the world. I think Yash Raj is one of the few companies that can but even they have a partner distributor in india. I'm pretty sure i read that at the yashraj site. anyway i'm sure in each country has its own distributors who buy the rights to release the movie on dvd.

My copy of Awaara Pagal Deewana clearly stated only for sale in USA & Canada & yet it was sold to me even though i live in australia since there are no official distributors in aus who release indian dvd's.

How popular is DVD in India? Few of my relatives even own a VCR.

I know what you mean about the VCR situation, but with all the local channels showing all the latest movies, no-one needs a VCR. I remember when I went, I was told to give a list of movies I wanted to see to the cable guy.

As for DVD, it is practically non-existant. In Kolkata, I could only find DVDs in one shop (Music World) - everywhere sells VCDs over there.

Whenever they want to watch a particular film, my relatives just rent a VCR and tapes. Maybe people are now renting DVD players???
