DVHS is a stop gap arrangement before HDVD takes over ! So Wont bother with buying anything that is in a "Tape" format !

agreed tape format is rubbish who wants to rewind/ff, have no scene skip indexing..........

dvd though has loads of room for improvement....

haloing of images (ie ghosting)
aliasing
lip synch problems
layer changes

due to bad decoding perhaps but lets see an end to those problems once and for all! :ffs:

We are presently working (my research work) on technologies that will eventually find their way in H DVDs, and add to that a sprikling of 3-D video and you have the ideal home theatre virtual reality experience !

DVHS has been around for so long. It's only good for taping digital broadcasts.

A movie on DVHS costs $35. A movie on DVD with about 10x the features costs $20. The DVHS player costs for $1000. The DVD player costs under $100.

No way.

Like I told you, DVDs of today are based on a compression technology using the DCT (aka the discrete cosine transform which has been deemed obselete now for the much better and improved DWT aka the discrete wavelet transform. However you have problems with the DWT as its requires quite a lot of computation itself).

The problems of aliasing and haloing should be significantly reduced using the next generation compression technology !
One more thing is you can actually get a chance to tune ur viewing comfort based on ur display ( the so called spatial & temporal scalibilty effect).. with DVD players having zoom effects you can actually make it zoom without the present zooming techniques which rely on poor interpolation techniques

D-Theater is for videophiles with high end equipment
that don't want to wait some years for HD-DVD. It's here.
HD-DVD nobody knows when it's coming and how good it will
be (the red laser standard with MPEG-4 at 9 Mbit is not
an acceptable HD solution).
D-Theater blows away any DVD as does good over the air
HD that has been available for years. I will very likely
adopt that format soon.
I no longer buy DVDs that will come out as HD anytime
soon. Waste of money.
As far as Indian films are concerned there is at least
one HD transfer ready: Mission Kashmir. But it won't be
of D-VHS for some time.
cheers
Michel Hafner

Hafner i beg to differ with you. D-VHS will be a stop gap arrangement until the real king of them all H DVD comes and gobbles up the market. Being backward compatible (you can also play ur present DVDs also in them) it will most certainly be accepted.

It is more than the laser that the standard is not being accepted. Its cos of the actual coding techqniue which is disassuading folks (read companies) from investing in H-DVD film transfers.

They have to release it in HD. Columbia-Tristar is not
releasing on D-Theater for the time being and HBO shows
cropped to 16:9 if it's wider and anamorphic (super 35
wider than 16:9 stuff though is usually open matte and
no picture lost). MK is anamorphic and would be cropped
IF it's coming. So no acceptable HD release in sight.
