Deewana Mastana Picture Quality??

Saw Deewana Mastana from Video Sound recently. The DVD was done by Super Digital. VS-Super Digital combo seems to be giving crap quality recently, but I wonder what did you think of Deewana Mastana. In my opinion, though cropped from sides, the picture was sharp and seemed like from film source. No double images or soft video or blurring in motion scenes. Just like DEI.

If your opinion is the same as mine, then what is the reason for poor (video look) picture in the recent VS-SD combo releases? Is it that a Video (VHS or beta) master is being used as the source instead of Film?

Rana,
I have the same question. I watched some of the songs from this movie in the 6-pack song pack. Although they are crapped picture is sharp comparable with some of the EROS/DEI works. I don’t know why this is better but it is not from film source. I always think that some of the videosound Dvd’s looks better than most of the EROS and YRF.
In contrast I recently watched Company dvd by EROS which gives a new meaning for the Indian dvd quality. The PQ went down hill.

Hi Ganti,

Many a times we have seen that a film source DVD has better (and DVD quality sharp) picture. Unfortunately, with my present player and familiarity, I am unable to identify the Film Source vs. Video Source. Luckily you have the right equipment that indicates Progressive/ Interlaced or Film/ Video source.

My main reason for insisting on Progressive Film source DVD is to get the much-improved picture from a progressive player-display combo. I have seen the resulting picture from a progressive signal digitally displayed on 1280x768 50-inch plasma, bypassing NTSC/ PAL etc. In my opinion the picture looked better than 1080i HDTV.

Often video/ interlace sourced Indian DVD gives inferior picture on interlaced sets as well where it should not have mattered. I think the reason for this is that the non-film sourced Indian DVDs are routinely made from VHS or Beta masters and the finished product can be no better than the source.
Also at times, perhaps like in the case of Deewana Mastana, Film source is used for mastering but the encoding is not done in Film/ progressive mode which will give an equally good picture on interlaced sets but unlike progressive DVD, there will be no improvement on progressive sets.
Then there is case of Shemaroo DVDs where the picture is very sharp, is from film source, but has double images in any motion freeze frame. This may be due to mix-up in 24 fps film vs. 60 video half frames.

Another speculation for “Company” like picture:
Could it be due to low intensity (or incandescent) light source used for Cine-tel projection??

Any Comments/ Corrections Ali/ mhafner??

As my setup consists of 105-inch diagonal screen I can see all the imperfections from the image projected through any progressively sourced and projected picture.
I really can’t see why a 1080i HD image looks same as a DVD image unless you are not getting the proper HD resolution. As I see in my setup I am getting the best image possible from the HBO HD channels even though most of the movies are cropped to 1.85:1. The image quality is simply beats any DVD image hands down. After all DVD resolution is only 720X480 compared to the HDTV resolution of 1920x1080.

Again for the question of sharply looking dvd images from a non progressively mastered dvd I think you are right, probably they might be using film source but not flagged properly.

As I have mentioned in other thread the Telugu EVP dvd’s ‘Hello Brother’ and ‘Allari Alludu’ looks very sharp even though are not mastered in film mode.
