India's previous Oscar nominated film before Lagaan, Mira Nair's Salaam Bombay is getting a R2 DVD release on June 17, same street date as Monsoon Wedding.

One to look out for :wot:

Not sure who owns R1 rights. But the popularity of Indian films together with the runaway success of Monsoon Wedding, Mira Nair’s films are bound to get picked up and appreciated by a wider audiences sooner or later.

Got Salaam Bombay! today. Disc specs:

1.85:1 anamorphic video
PAL region 2
Mono sound
English subtitles - unfortunately non-removable only
Full length commentary by directory Mira Nair

..let down is the non-removable subtitles and only a single layered disc is used. Still the bit rate averages 5.21Mb/sec – video is fairly sharp (not the best), clear and general very detailed. Review soon.

Should the aspect ratio be 1.85:1 or 1.66:1? I have a VHS that is about 1.66:1, but it was probably protected for 1.85:1 since most US theaters would have projected it at that aspect ratio.

1.85:1 looks like the original AR. Same on Monsoon Wedding too.

I think the OAR for Salaam Bombay was 1.66:1 but was matted to 1.85:1 for cinema releases. More frame info is seen on my VHS widescreen version then on the DVD. Still not a bad DVD shame about the non-removable subtitles, which means the source used wasn't from the original negatives in India. I hope the Region One DVD will improve on this. Also was a bit sadden by the film being stored on a DVD-5 disc instead of a DVD-9 disc.

The subs, judging by the screenshots, look electronic, rather than being on the print itself. And since it is 16:9 enhanced, they had to have done a new transfer, unless it is faux-16:9. So maybe they did source it from the original negative, but put unremoveable electronic subtitles for some reason.

Why is this dvd in mono when the actual film was in stereo?? This is unacceptable...
