Hey folks! I've stopped posting for a whiles due to summer classes.

Anyways I was watching Guru Dutt's Pyaasa on Zee TV a few days ago and noticed that it had a storyline very similar to DEVDAS. Waheeda Rehman enacting the role of the Prostitute and Mala Sinha being the lover that married someone else. Excellent movie but I thought I would mention it.

Nope Pillai its not the same

It differs in one aspect :-

In Devdas PARO is FORCED to leave Devdas due to rigid rules in the society, whereas in Pyaasa she leaves Vijay the poet (Guru Dutt) as she thinks he is dead/gone insane and also she gets attracted to the wealth of Rehman !

She wasnt forced in anyway

Initially the role in Pyaasa was offered to dilip Kumar. But since it was very similar to his role in Devdas, he turned it down. Guru Dutt decided to play the role himself.

And Nargis and Madhubala were considered for the two actresses, which was finalized with Mala Sinha and Waheeda Rehman.

I had read a little different version. Not sure if Dilip Kumar had accepted the role or not, but on the shooting day Dilip Kumar did not show up or came late, which made Guru Dutt upset and he decided to do the role himself.

Don't recall Nargis - Madhu Bala angle but it seems logical if Dilip was the main lead.

Similarly chandramukhi's role had originally been offered to Nargis, Bina Rai & Suraiyya. But they all turned it down.
