You really think? I think the film looks pretty bad overall, and AB's character looks to be a cross between Sarkar and RGV Ki Aag. I hope I'm proved wrong!

I think Ram Gopal Verma has advertently reinvented the Bachchan late-era image. You've already pointed out the marriage of Sarkar & RGV ki Aag in Bachchan's role in Department. Given Ramu's highest regard for Bachchan, these tailor made roles allow his central performance to overshadow his costars. This probably sounds too pompous on Ramu's end. But in my view, these are some of the most completely realized Bachchan performances of late. Smartly, here bachchan never plays the centric (sub-standard Johar-esque) billionaire for cheap disease-of-the-week sympathy, nor for easy laughs. In Ramu's world, Bachchan fully inhabits his role without ever quite allowing the audience to do the same.

Correct me if I'm wrong here but when i saw the preview, the movie that came to my mind right away was "The Departed" starring Leonardo Dicaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson. I hope I"m wrong.

No similarity between Big B's role in Department & Sarkar: Ram Gopal Varma
21 April 2012

Creative director Ram Gopal Varma will always be in news the moment his new project begins. With his latest movie Department’s release is round the corner, he tweeted to put an end to the assumptions and speculations that were in air over Big B’s character.

Many film experts and others were feeling that Amitabh Bachchan’s role would be similar to the role in Sarkar. He has said that except for the grey hair and looks, there was no resemblance between Amitabh Bachchan’s characters in Sarkar and Department. The character in Department was more nasty, he tweets.

It may be mentioned here that Department movie is scheduled to release in June. However, the film unit is apparently reshooting some of the scenes besides the entire climax was decided to be changed as Sanjay Dutt and the film production house were not happy with the climax. The climax will now be shot by the direction crew of maverick director Ram Gopal Varma. Also, a song was also scheduled for re-shoot.

Department would be released simultaneously in both Hindi and Telugu while the Telugu version will be a dubbed one. Notably, grandson of star producer Rama Naidu, Rana will appear as a cop in this film. RGV fans are eagerly awaiting for the new flick to hit theaters.

'Department' Is A Box Office Disaster
21 May 2012

Department is a disaster at the box office as it collected around 7.25-7.50 crore nett over the weekend. The film grossed 2.75 crore nett on Friday, 2 crore nett on Saturday and Sunday was around 2.50-2.75 crore nett.

The collections at multiplexes were extremely low while single screens at mass centres recorded better collections.

Ishaqzaade in its second week was better at multiplexes all over while children's animation film Chhota Bheem and The Curse Of Damyaan was ahead at multiplexes where both films had screenings. Even Vicky Donor in its fifth week was recording better numbers at many multiplexes.

Department was released on 44 theatres in Delhi city and collected just 55 lakhs approx. Thats just over 1 lakh per theatre when Delhi city has the most high grossing theatres in the country.

I don't know if I shall work with Ram Gopal Varma again: Sanjay Dutt
22 May 2012

Ram Gopal Varma's Department, which crashed at the box office, has thrown into sharp focus the fissures that ran deep within the team.

The gloves are off, and the stakeholders are indulging in a slug fest with Sanjay Dutt going to the extent of saying he doesn't want to ever join hands with RGV again. Speaking to us on Monday evening, Dutt said, "Hits and flops are a part of the industry. But I really don't know if I shall work with Ramu again."

Dharam Oberoi, CEO of Sanjay Dutt Productions, too said, "I am sure that I don't want to work with Ramu on any other project in my life. We told Ramu so often those 5D cameras, which he used, are not apt to make a film but to no avail. Ramu just does not listen."

Dutt seconded Oberoi saying, "I have been in the industry for 32 years and I know which cameras are suitable and which are not. But ab kya karen? Jo ho gaya so ho gaya. But yes, I really don't know at this point of time if I want to work with Ramu again."

RGV's reaction to the outrage was predictable: "I don't know what they are thinking and neither do I care... but from my side, I don't want to see the faces of Sanjay Dutt and Dharam Oberoi for the rest of my life."

Department has been panned by critics and audiences alike, despite the stellar cast comprising Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt and Rana Dagubatti.

A trade expert on request of anonymity told Mirror, "The film has incurred severe losses from the time it released."

There were reports that Dutt and Varma were at loggerheads throughout the making of the film however at that point in time, Dutt chose to remain silent. Even Oberoi had denied there were any problems. He had said: "Department is going to mark Ramu's comeback to hardhitting films."

But now, after the debacle, Oberoi is of a very different opinion. He said: "Department would have been worse had it not been for a few scenes that were reshot at Dutt's insistence."

'Department' debacle: Ram Gopal Varma blames Sanjay Dutt
23 May 2012

After his last release Department, logged poor collections at the box office, filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma, who apparently developed creative differences with Sanjay Dutt, today said he had a harrowing time working with the actor in the movie.

Department starred Sanjay Dutt, Amitabh Bachchan and Rana Dagubbati in the lead besides Anjana Sukhani and Abhimanyu Singh in pivotal roles. The film released on May 18 and was panned by critics.

Reportedly made at a budget of Rs 30 crore, the film has so far earned Rs 7 crore at the box office. "Whatever else happening to Department I am supremely happy that I don't want to see the faces of Sanjay Dutt and Dharam Oberoi (CEO of Sanjay Dutt Productions) for the rest of my life," Varma wrote on Twitter.

While the shooting of the film was going on, there were reports that both Varma and Dutt were at loggerheads. However, during media interactions both denied it.

"From forcing me to take Kangana (Kangana Ranaut) out of the film to constantly cornering me to change screenplay, I had the most horrible time working with Dutt," Varma said.

Both Dutt and Oberoi too had expressed displeasure over the way the film was handled by Varma. "If Dutt and Oberoi think I am the bad in Department lets wait for Zilla Ghaziabad and Soham's film where I am not there to spoil their creative inputs," Varma said.

Not sure what tossessed me to watch this but I did and it's not as bad as reviews are making out. Seems another Sakar / Company type film with someone going really overboard with the use of their new camera toys which is distraction than adding anything to all too familiar story.
