got this article from filmfare.com.. i am pasting it here as the site is now only accessible to indiatimes members....

Does that mean us unfortunate desis get to see the shorter version?????

Sanjay Leela Bhasali's magnum opus 'Devdas' is becoming larger and larger than life with each passing day. After the amazing accolades it has received at the Cannes, our desi audiences can't seem to hold on any longer to actually capture this grandiose 'work of art' on screen. Now we've heard that Indian version of 'Devdas' will be longer than the overseas version. Not a bad idea, huh? You obviously can't trust the foreign audiences to sit thorough every minute of those 3-hours and savour all the song 'n' dance numbers. Expect a mastermind like Sanjay Leela Bhansali to do things differently and be a cut above the rest. And he can go to any 'length' to do that.

That's so wrong... I can understand if it was playing in front of a completely foreign audience, but we deserve the real cut. I'll throw a fit if they cut out any songs, that's one of the reasons I'm so excited to see it!

Here's my guess: if an edited version is released abroad, it will play only in the mainstream theaters, while the un-edited Indian version will play in specifically Indian theaters. They did this with Lagaan -- the version I saw in the mainstream theater last week didn't have the subtitles (in English) during the confrontation between the British commanders at the Brit. HQ the way the print did (to my utter amusement) at Naz 8 cinema.

I don't think that's fair at all. I'm in the usa and I love indian movies just as much as anyone in India.

Why is everyone so worked up about Devdas? This movie is getting all this attention for nothing. This is going to be a total piece of SHIT!!!! Sanjay Leela Bhansali thinks he's going to score with this just because he did well with HDDCS well i think it's time he was bought down to earth with a bump! SRK is well overrated as is the atrocious and miserable music in this flick. Well just cos it's the most expensive inidan movie to date and stars SRK, doesn't mean it deserves all this attention and hype lets just wait till the release. And as for matching the superb, LAGAAN (in terms of Box office, direction, storytelling etc) - dream on!!!

One thing more? Even he acts 5% more what he did in HTHS..he will make it IMHO?? SRK needs the right director and right team, where he is not left to DIRECT himself!

The other thing, I am going to Torch SLB's house too, besides his sets! If he gives us desis, even a second less of music of DEVDAS in his film? I mean it! I want it!! :baaa: and i am UNANIMOUS in that! :baaa: :vangry:
There is no COMPROMISE on that1..period
