In the UK when the word Asian is used it refers to persons from South Asia i.e. India, Pakistan, Bangladesh & Sri Lanka. I believe when the word Asian is used in America (or anywhere outside UK & Africa) they mostly refer to people of Chinese descent. Government papers here in the UK actually classifies Asians from South Asia ie Ind, Pak etc.. Chinese and Japanese are not classified among this group.

Far East Asian descent in the UK is either Chinese or 'other ethnic' - again this coming from official government paper work.
