TWO VERSIONS OF RAMU'S SAME FILM

By Aira

Movie Talk

We are discussing Ram Gopal Verma. The name is synonymous with films that are real, close to life, simple and different. This filmmaker with every film of his whether directed by him or his associates always tries to bring out something new and fresh. This creative genius continues to carry the cinematic experience further down the unknown road. This time he has planned to release his next thriller titled 'Murder' at Shri Krishna Building as two separate films, 'Galti Se' meaning by accident or by mistake, and 'Jaan-Bhooj Ke' meaning intentionally.

Verma elaborates, "It's a about a man played by Anil Kapoor who kills his wife. When the director Jiji Philips my chief assistant in 'Bhoot' and I was discussing the plot we came to two equally tempting conclusions: Either the guy killed the wife who's being played by Suchitra Krishnamurthy accidentally or intentionally. Instead of making a tough choice I suggested we go ahead and film both the versions." "Basically it's the same character undergoing the same situation, but from two different perspectives. So we are putting out two different versions of the film with different footage, editing and background score. Each version will be an autonomous experience. Therefore they are two separate films and experiences," adds Ramu.

Thirty per cent of the two films will be different and mind you this change is not just in the climax or the end of the film. " We are not talking about two different endings of the film like in Vipul Shah's 'Aankhen' but two completely different films called 'Galti Se' and 'Jaan Bhooj Ke'," explains Verma. But both the films will be releasing simultaneously. "Let's say we release 50 prints in Mumbai, 25 will be 'Galti Se' and the rest 'Jaan Bhooj Ke'. Actually we are asking the audience to go and watch both the films depending which version they like," says Verma pondering.

A couple of films from the west like 'Citizen Kane' among many others and more recently Kamal Haasan's Tamil film 'Virumaandi' have contained various perspectives but in the same film. This is the first time probably in the history of cinema that two versions of the same film will be out for the audience to see and judge for themselves." Apart from two releases our television promos will also be split into half and half; twenty seconds for each version. Likewise the two films will be releasing in two separate theatres in the same multiplex. We want to demarcate a very clear line between the two films. As far as the single screen cinemas are concerned we'll have to think of a strategy. Maybe the first version comes out and plays for a while and then the second version is put in that single screen cinema," says the filmmaker.

Known for giving different and path breaking films let's see if this experiment of the Ram Gopal Verma factory works with the audience.
