Three Big Name films are releasing on Dec 21, 2007.
First Biggie "Halla Bol" (HB) is by big name Raj Kumar Santoshi
Second one is Aamir Khan's "Taare Zameen Par" (TZP)
and third one is Anees Bazmi, Akshay, Katrina (and many others) combo "Welcome".

Let's start with a zulmi poll, what do you think of the outcome of these three films in order of Box Office Success:

--------------
Pl note, 2 choices allowed in poll.

I think Halla Bol has already been moved to January.

Between Welcome and TZP, the former will have higher grosses, BUT the latter will be a bigger hit. Two reasons:
a) Welcome has sold for distribution rights of 60 crores worldwide. That is a very high amount to recover.
b) TZP is an Aamir film, and his only release this year. Even if it only caters to the elite audience, I am guessing it can easily do Rs 35 crores in India, and over $1 million each in North America and UK.

What factors could derail my prediction? Bad weather or socio-political turmoil in India in which case, both films will flop.

And if my predictions are correct, it will be the first time that has happened in history. I'll open a 1-900 Astrology number, called Peer Ali Baba to celebrate. LOL

Oops! Didn't notice another thread for TZP, where these comments would have been more apprropriate.

Mine are just some excerpts, while complete Indiafm.com report is already in that thread.
Let's leave this thread just for comparative Box Office discussion.

TZP has fetched great reviews and encouragements:

TAARE ZAMEEN PAR heralds the birth of a topnotch storyteller -- Aamir Khan.

At the end of the day, it's not difficult to choose who's better -- Aamir, the actor or Aamir, the director. TAARE ZAMEEN PAR is a triumph all the way from the director's point of view.

But the best part is reserved for the finale -- the art competition in the penultimate twenty minutes. The emotions reach an all-time high as the kid regains his confidence. The finale would melt even the stone-hearted!

Directorially, Aamir Khan deserves distinction marks for extracting an exemplary performance from the kid and handling the plot with supreme sensitivity. In his debut film itself, Aamir proves that he's a gifted storyteller, someone who has the courage to swim against the tide and also convince the viewer that there's more to film-making than the mere masala entertainers. Bravo!

Setu's cinematography is mesmeric. The camera captures every minute detail, every emotion, every tear with precision.

On the whole, TAARE ZAMEEN PAR is an outstanding work of cinema. To miss it would be sacrilege. It has everything it takes to win awards and box-office rewards!

Do yourselves a favor. Watch TAARE ZAMEEN PAR with your child. It will change your world. It will also change the way you look at your kids!

Industry hails Taare Zameen Par
By Joginder Tuteja, December 19, 2007 - 12:32 IST

"Taare Zameen Par is one of the best films that you would have ever seen", declares a prominent film personality ---
-he goes on to add, "If there is a film from India which truly stands a chance at the Oscars, it has to be Taare Zameen Par. What a fabulous performance by the kid Darsheel Safary."

- "Aamir has used his two decades of experience into creating a film which is nothing short of a masterpiece.

- "Aamir Khan has come up with a brilliant effort that would shut up all his detractors who find it fashionable to label him as a perfectionist. Ok, so he may indeed be a perfectionist but if this is what a perfectionist gives to the industry and the audience, let's have more of such breed. He has made a flawless directorial debut."

And still they are cautious about Welcome releasing the same day:

There have been murmurs around the film's box office prospects getting hampered due to parallel release of Welcome. Akshay Kumar is on a roll and director Anees Bazmee is super charged with Welcome arriving two years after his last blockbuster No Entry.

"I am sure that Taare Zameen Par would stand on it's own in spite of Welcome. Yes, Welcome is going to be a 'masala' entertainer and even I am not going to miss it at the theaters. But then is it against the law to watch two films over the same weekend? Even if Welcome is as commercial as it gets, Taare Zameen Par also qualifies itself into 'don't miss it' category."

BTW, Welcome is starting a day earlier, on Thursday at Toronto Desi Cinemas. From Friday, it's both TZP and Welcome at Toronto 'A' Theaters as well.
Not sure if either film is showing in Ottawa. SilverCity doesn't have either of the film in their schedule.
----------------------------------------------
Added Later:
Welcome is now listed for Rainbow Cinemas. Not a theater of choice, but better than Welcome not showing at all.

TZP still not showing at Ottawa AMC or Silvercity listings for next week. :o I expected TZP to be showing at Silvercity.

On the whole, WELCOME is a fun ride all the way. The tremendous hype for the film has resulted in a tremendous start at the ticket window and the 5-day weekend as also the lack of biggies in the subsequent weeks will help WELCOME reach the ‘Smash Hit’ status in days to come.

Indiafm have given Welcome the thumbs up - am I the only person who has zero interest in watching this?

I already have my tickets for both movies. Seeing them back to back actually. Not really interested in either but just catching them since they're out there so maybe they'll surprise me.

Just got back from watching 'Taare Zameen Par'. All I have to say, atleast for now that is, do not miss the movie. It is one of the nicest films I have seen in a while, truelly moving and entertaining at the same time. Kudos & welcome to Aamir Khan, another director whose films I will henceforth look forward to.

You can find a more in-depth view on the film, here -->Taare Zameen Par: Not a 'classic'? But a definite "MUST SEE"

Taare Zamin Par is getting all the kudos but the initial Box Office response is all for Welcome.

Good or bad, Welcome is projected to recover it's costs in just 10 days while Taare Zamin Par too will be a Hit eventually as critics as well as audience reaction is very positive.

Welcome storms the box office-24/12/07 20.00 IST
The Aneez Bazmee directed Welcome has done extraordinary business in its first weekend. The film has collected a massive 16 crore nett in three days and that too without a big percentage of multiplex business on its first day. The film which has been sold for high prices in nearly all the circuits will recover that money in around 10-12 days.

Welcome is the fifth consecutive outright hit for Akshay Kumar. The other four being Bhagam Bhag, Namastey London, Heyy Babyy and Bhool Bhulaiyaa.

The other release of the week Taare Zameen Par improved after a slow start. The collections showed an upswing at places like Mumbai, Delhi, Pune and Bangalore but at single screens the film is finding it tough going at the moment due to the onslaught by Welcome.
