Why are South Asians so bad at acknowledging talent?
The stupidest of films become blockbusters. The stupidest of saas-bahu TV serials are watched each night religiously? And the least deserving of singers seem to always win this "challenge".
True, I'm not a HUGE fan of the show, as I can't be bothered with watching any unending series without a plot. Especially one where adverts come every three minutes. But I have caught bits and pieces this and past seasons thanks to my family gluing themselves to the TV set for it every so often.
First of all, it's a farce that no female has ever won a singing competition on Indian TV. This season's Pooja was amazing, and deserved to be in the top 2. It's sad, but I think prejudice against females outside the home is still rampant in our community.
But moreover, the winners of the show make little sense. Are viewers tone deaf? Last year they selected the annoying as hell Debojit over a ten times more talented youngster whose name I am guilty for forgetting. Out of sight, out of mind. Such is life.
Now this season, Indian viewers have given the prize to Aneek (pronounced O-nic, like an electronics company). This dude is sooooo undeserving it is not funny. The rightful prize should have gone to Pakistan's Amanat Ali, as voted by the show's international viewers, but due to patriotism (which I can accept as a justifiable excuse), he did not win.
But at least then let Raja from Rajhastan win people. Onik's voice is about as pleasant as that of Nalin Dave from Prem. Who, did you ask? Go listen to the album. You'll understand what I mean. (Butt-heard ruined this otherwise marvellous soundtrack from Laxmi Pyare.)
Here's hoping that Amanat, Pooja and Raja still get a chance in the Indian music industry. They have the talent to go places.
And I pray that Onik, Debojit and Nalin never make an album together. That would be horrible punishment... or maybe for the viewers of Saregama, it would be Nirvana? I can see it now... sales of 10 crore albums in one month.
