Army man Ranjit Singh [Sanjay Dutt] returns home after a long time. Declared missing in action after he inadvertently crossed the border, Ranjit went through trauma and torment as a prisoner across the border.

Amongst the faces to greet Ranjit on his return is that of his wife Pammi [Tabu] and sister Simran [Mahima Chaudhary]. They are happy that their loved one is back, but are shocked to see his condition.

In the Army Hospital, Ranjit is trying to recuperate from the horrifying experiences he has gone through. He sees a face every time he shuts his eyes, only to reopen them in a state of confusion. He has lost his memory, but can only remember this face.

Meanwhile, Pammi and Simran try to help Ranjit to get back to normal life, but in vain. Disappointed, Pammi begins giving up hope when Simran vows to bring Ranjit back to his normal self. How she will do this, no one knows, but she has the support of Ravi [Chandrachur Singh], a folk singer whom she is engaged to.

Simran's efforts pay off and Ranjit discovers the root cause of his pathetic condition. His tormentor was Bhaktavar [Rahul Dev], a mercenary terrorist associated with traitors in India.

While Ranjit tries to fight the enemy within and Pammi tries to recapture the glorious moments with her husband, Simran is caught in the emotional dilemma between supporting her brother in his fight against his oppressor and fulfilling her marital commitment to the man she has tied the knot for life.

SARHAD PAAR is about the faith and courage of Indian people; a story of the heroism of a traumatised soldier who wants to take revenge for the cruelties he suffered and the hardships his family had to face while he was in captivity.

Blended with sensitive moments, emotional scenes, high drama and raw earthy action, the highlight of the film is the powerhouse performance of Sanjay Dutt, who portrays an array of scenes while portraying a Sikh for the first time.

As Ranjit Singh, he is the patriotic soldier out for revenge as well as the man whose urge for sweet romance with his wife still goes strong. While he is the ever-caring father figure to his sister, he is also the man of action with sharp senses to distinguish between the right and the wrong and to stand up against the evil.

'Sarhad Paar' is a story about the faith and courage of Indian people, as well as a tale of heroism.

After being declared missing in action when he inadvertently crossed the border, patriotic soldier Ranjit Singh (Sanjay Dutt) finally returns home to his wife Pammi (Tabu) and his sister Simran (Mahima Chaudhary), but not before undergoing trauma and torment as a prisoner. Even as he is recuperating in an army hospital, he sees a face every time he closes his eyes, only to reopen them in a state of confusion. Without his memory, he only remembers this face…his roving mind always searching for its identity.

The Holy land of the Punjab is where the story of 'Sarhad Paar' is based. On the arid border of this terrorism-ridden state, army man Ranjit Singh (Sanjay Dutt) walks home after a long time lag. Declared missing in action by the state after he accidentally crossed the border, Ranjit Singh has gone through grave trauma and torment at the hands of terrorists. This has broken him completely, leaving him as nothing but a body with no progressive mind.

Amongst the faces to greet Ranjit on his return, is that of his wife Pammi (Tabu) and of his sister Simran (Mahima Choudhary). They are happy that their loved one is back but are shocked to see his condition. In the Army Hospital, Ranjit is trying to recuperate from the horrifying experiences he has gone through.

Meanwhile, Pammi and Simran try to help Ranjit to rejuvenate and get back to normal life. However no matter how hard they try, all that they come across is Ranjit's blank face. Disappointed, Pammi begins giving up hope when Simran vows to bring Ranjit back to his normal self. How she will do this no one knows, but she has the support of Ravi (Chandrachur Singh), a folk singer whom she is engaged to.

Simran's efforts pay off and Ranjit discovers the root cause of his pathetic condition. His tormentor was Bhaktavar (Rahul Dev), a mercenary who recruits traitors from both sides of the border. While Ranjit tries to fight the enemy within, Pammi tries to recapture the glorious moments with her husband and Simran is caught in the emotional dilemma between supporting her brother in his fight against his oppressor and fulfilling her marital commitment to the man she has tied the knot for life.

'Sarhad Paar' is a story of the heroism of a traumatized soldier who is up to take revenge for the cruelties and the hardships he had to face. It's a tale of the faith and commitment of two women who provide a man the strength to achieve his goal. Blended with sensitive moments, emotional scenes, high drama and raw earthy action, the highlight is the powerhouse performance of Sanjay Dutt who plays an array of scenes while portraying a Sikh for the first time. As Ranjit Singh while he is the petrified soldier up for revenge, he is also the man whose urge for sweet romance with his wife still goes strong. While he is the ever-caring father figure to his sister, he is also the man of action with sharp senses to distinguish the right and the wrong, and to stand up against the evil. He is a staunch believer in the teaching that..."When all other means have failed, it is then righteous to take the sword in the hand".

Baradwaj Rangan's review

IF the noirish Red channels Old Hollywood, Sarhad Paar channels Old Bollywood. The way the flashbacks are constructed (wife feeds husband a piece of roti in sad times; cut to wife feeding husband a piece of roti in happier times), the presence of faces we don’t see much anymore (Raza Murad, Pankaj Dheer, Anjana Mumtaz), the voices of Alka Yagnik and Udit Narayan in a saccharine duet that uses just about every romantic cliché (sample line: Janam janam ke bandhan tujhse bandh liye hain), the dupatta billowing about a woman as she races through green fields and clambers aboard her lover’s tractor – it all harks back to some long-ago, pre-multiplex era. Things begin somewhat intriguingly when the hammy bad guy (Rahul Dev) intones, “Log kehte hain ki hum Hindustan ko mitana chahte hain...” A dramatic pause later, he continues, “Pakistan ko bhi mitana chahte hain.” Oh! So he’s some new kind of terrorist, one who’s fighting to clear the world of borders? That’s what he claims, but nothing he does bears this out. Instead we’re asked to care whether army man Ranjit Singh (a sleepy Sanjay Dutt; Tabu plays his wife, and clearly the only reason she signed on is for some quick shopping money) can get out of the hospital in time to deflect the villain’s machine-gun sprays with a sword. Singh is in the hospital because he’s an amnesiac, the result of having been tortured across the border. Unfortunately, there’s no such condition that can wipe out the memories of an audience that’s suffered much worse.
