preposterous as ever:

Now Roshan became BEST ACTOR instead of Villian for Dhoom 2.

FilmFare astounds me by just how big a piece of shit it is. It's not an "award show" for "achievement in cinema"; it's a mother-fucking joke that celebrates "who made the most money," "who's the most popular," and "which film was in the headlines most frequently." I respect differences in taste and opinion, and all that: It's perfectly fine for someone to love 2006's Don, and even to consider it his or her favorite film of the year. Said picture probably can't, however, really be considered the "best film of 2006" in any regard but "financial success" (or, maybe, "good entertainer"). "Best Picture" generally (read, generally) alludes to a movie somehow socially salient, somehow meaningful, and not to a successful "out-and-out" comedy or action film. Such efforts are generally thought of as more "specialized," more "niched." Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery was one of my favorite comedies at the time it came out, and I just loved Spider-Man 2, but neither's really the "type" of movie I'd nominate for a general "Best Picture" award. It's not that I feel a movie has to be totally devoid of humor or entertainment to qualify for this type of "honor"; I just don't think that a genre so dedicated to sheer entertainment quite qualifies for what I, personally, associate with such an award. How, then, is FilmFare — arguably India's most "meaningful" film award — able to see it fit to nominate Dhoom 2 — a fun but "mindless" action movie — Don — a decent re-make of a very good 1970s "masala film" — and Krrish — a fucking super-hero movie intended largely for a "younger" audience — for the "Best Picture of the Year" award? Yes, Rang De Basanti and Lage Raho Munnabhai are (rightly) there, as well, but that doesn't really excuse the inclusion of the aforementioned three ventures. Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna can be argued to be "socially-relevant" (I wouldn't make the argument, but I believe it can be made), so perhaps it, too, can be considered an "appropriate" choice.

One other thing I find a bit odd is the splitting up of "best performer" awards into such distinct categories. It just strikes me as peculiar that Saif Ali Khan might get a "Best Actor In A Negative Role" award (for his work in Omkara), but is ineligible for a simple (and, perhaps, more coveted) "Best Actor" award for the same performance. Perhaps this does make some degree of sense — I'm not steadfast on being against it — and I feel I'd like to hear what others think of it.

So... there's my rant. :)

Amen, Commando. It's sad that people actually feel this is a prestigious awards show.

Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna's music was basically a re-hash of Kal Ho Naa Ho's; both soundtracks sort of sucked. Believe it or not, the music of Don (2006) has grown on me, of late. It's not that I'd rank it alongside that of 1978's Don, I just find myself somewhat liking it, now. Personally, I loved neither Omkara nor its music; neither was "bad," but I suppose neither just really appealed to me...

Someone has got to be kidding or they must be tone deaf I suppose.
Filmfare Awards are a joke and their silly 'Best Actor in a negative role', 'Best Actor in a comic role' category now makes even less sense with Hrithik and Shahrukh nominated for 'Best Actor in a leading role for Dhoom 2 and Don repectively, rather than for 'Best Actor in a negative role'. Are they now suggesting that as long as you are slick and suave that stealing and killing is alright and no longer a negative trait in a person?

Because I somewhat like it, sure. Because it's basically just a re-mix of the music from 1978's film... perhaps not.

Agreed. (SPOILER:) Especially seeing as Shah Rukh Khan's Don (the character) wasn't even a "good guy" (Vijay), all along, it makes absolutely no sense for him to be nominated for "Best Actor," when there exists a "Best Actor In A Negative Role" category. Don dealt drugs, killed people, was wanted by the police of eleven nations... but he was nothing compared with the vile, despicable, devlish creature portrayed by Boman Irani in Lage Raho Munnabhai? Wow, that's some pure, unadulterated horse-diarrhea. If nothing else, they should just call them, "Best 'Star' Actor" and "Best 'non-Shah-Rukh-Khan/non-A-list-type/so-someone-else-can-also-get-an-award' Actor" awards. That's really what it looks like, anyway, which explains why A-list star Akshay Kumar isn't in the "Best Actor In A Comedic Role" category. It's almost as though every "other" "Best Actor" award is really just a "Second-Best Actor" one, and I feel that that shouldn't be their purpose (i.e., establishing who's a "star" and who's not).

Maybe we could use some more areas: "Best Actor Above Forty Years of Age"; "Best Actor Who Doesn't Command a Multi-Crore Stipend"; "Best Actor Who Had a 'Heroine' In His Movie"; "Best Actor Whose Last Name Is Not 'Khan' or 'Kapoor'"... It's not necessarily preposterous to divide up performance type, but it is to separate people based on "who they are."

Another thing I find ridiculous is the nomination of the same person multiple times in the same category. For example, something like 2004's debacle of, Shah Rukh Khan for "Best Actor" for hos role in Veer-Zaara, in Main Hoon Na, and in Swades; and Amitabh Bachchan for his in Khakee. I don't recall that this is exactly what happened, but it's reasonably close. Given, they're different performances, and maybe we could argue that they're all great, but it's the same damned person, and it's not fair for him to hog a category that way.

I'm well known here for being a big fan of awards shows - the whole process of nominations, speculations and the ceremony itself. Hell, I've even done threads on zulm about predictions and who is most deserving, etc.

So you'll know it's quite telling when I say that I'm done with Filmfare. Forever. We've had some pathetic years before, but there's not a category here that I can wrap my head around. Glad to see a few names like Bharadwaj and others show up, but I'm finished. It's absolutely maddening how a film like Dhoom 2 gets nominated in a Best Picture lineup.

It's over.
