Mumbai teens film the plagiarism in Bollywood
By IndiaFM News Bureau, December 26, 2006 - 11:46 IST

Three Mumbai teenagers have made a documentary film on the Plagiarism happening in Bollywood. Though the audiences in some cases come to know that certain films in Bollywood are copy of Hollywood or other foreign movies, there have been cases in which the copied films have become landmark cinema in Bollywood. Three teenage boys in Mumbai decided to do something about this and well, the resultant is the documentary titled Four Step Plan. This 60-minute documentary is a sarcastic take on the plagiarism that has been happening in Bollywood and which still continues to happen.

Some of the biggest films in Bollywood like Black, Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander and Ek Ajnabee among others are shown to be complete rip-off from Hollywood in this documentary. Also, the famous songs like Om Shanti Om from Karz and Mehbooba O Mehbooba from Sholay are inspired from foreign compositions.

The documentary is written and directed by Chaitanya Tamhane and Sudeep Modak is assistant director on the project.

I'm very happy to hear this and hope this documentary is given the publicity it deserves. The fact that it was teenagers behind it shows that there is hope for the future with the new generation. I hope Mr Bachchan gets to see this. But I think Indian audiences are just half-dead and wouldn't take much notice.

I can't, based on the preview, tell much about just where the documentary, as a whole, will stand on the matter of plagiarism in Indian films. If it attacks out-and-out plot-lifting, I'm all for it; if it denounces fifty-plus years of Hindi cinema as nothing but some glaring example of un-originality and copy-catting, then I sure as hell won't be. Again, from the preview, I'm not sure which way the film itself will lean: Clips are shown from throughout the ages of Indian cinema, though, so I suspect it might be somewhat be the latter...
