Ramu announces sequel to Sarkar
Subhash K Jha

It seems to be the season for sequels. First the sequels to Koi Mil Gaya (Krissh), Munnabhai MBBS (Munnabhai Versus The Mahatma) and Dhoom (Dhoom II). Now it's Ram Gopal Varma's turn to do a sequel to this season's big success – Sarkar. If you've watched Ramu's most successful film since Rangeela, you know that Sarkar ends with 'Chote Sarkar' Abhishek Bachchan sitting (a la Al Pacino in The Godfather) in the same position as his father, holding on to prayer beads and a cup of tea. “That's where the idea of the sequel was really born. As in The Godfather, the seeds of the sequel were planted in the first part. In Sarkar too, there's a Sarkar 2,” he chortles at his own pun.

But when is Ramu going to make all these films that he periodically insists on announcing? “Oh, don't you worry! My first priority is Sholay. But I'm already planning my sequel to Sarkar. And it will definitely be made after Sholay.”

Of course Ramu will direct it himself. And obviously the two Bachchans will reprise their roles from Sarkar in the sequel. “I need an excuse to work repeatedly with both the Bachchans. And what better excuse than a sequel to Sarkar?” he asks. And what does the senior Bachchan have to say? "I'm not surprised that Ramu has decided to do a sequel. We were all so excited by the characters he conceived. We couldn't let them die so easily."

I predict SARKAR III in 2 years and then perhaps he will just wait for Coppola to make one more godfather movie

this isn’t just a ramu thing, like the article mentions - other big hits like munnabhai, koi mil gaya and dhoom are also having sequels

not to mention all the hw sequels out or in the works - Star Wars: Episode 3, Saw 2, Ring 2, Indiana Jones 4, Resident Evil 2, Mission Impossible 3, Land of the Dead, Grudge 2, Die Hard 4, Devil's Rejects, Transporter 2, Batman Begins, TCM Prequel, Carlito's Way 2…

but personally, I am all for sequels if the the original was good
and unlike munnabhai, koi mil gaya and dhoom, sarkar was actually good

I'll stick with my copies of Rangeela and Satya, thanks very much.

The only sequel I'm looking forward to is Munnabhai, though I don't expect it to be nearly as good as the first one.

Dhoom was pretty crap, KMG was crap made watchable by HR's commendable performance, and Sarkar was very disappointing as well.

OK, hang the hell on. I don't think sequels are an innately wretched phenomenon, but I've noticed that they — more often than not — are sub-par. Though I'd not mind seeing a "Sarkar II," I hope it's less loud, and more deftly-crafted, than was Sarkar. Also, Munnabhai M.B.B.S. and Koi...Mil Gaya were excellent. Excellent. Dhoom was really good, but I wasn't particularly fond of the "Matrix: Reloaded"-inspired climax. Frankly, all three of this films were at least as good as Sarkar. If, indeed, "Sarkar II" shapes up, I'd like to see less Abhishek, and more Amitabh. Perhaps they could pull a "Godfather II," having Amitabh play his "rise-to-power" incarnation. (I think it'd be challenging to keep such sequences from apparently mimicking Agneepath [a.k.a., the greatest film ever], and would very much enjoy seeing the challenge met.)

Lovers’ mafia

Subhash K Jha

We first saw them together in the item song in Shaad Ali's Bunty Aur Babli. Now Amitabh, Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai are being teamed together by Ram Gopal Varma in his sequel to Sarkar.

Says Ramu, "Yes, it's true that Aishwarya has agreed to be a part of Sarkar 2. We only need to work out her dates. She'll play the lead opposite Abhishek."

Despite their not-so-memorable pairing (Kuch Na Kahon and Dhai Akshar Prem Ke) in the past, the couple do look compatible in the promotional clippings of J.P. Dutta's Umrao Jaan. "I don't think that's the primary motivation for my casting Aishwarya. I've been meaning to work with her for some time. But the vehicle has to be worthy of her presence. I did approach her on a few occasions earlier. But things didn't work out. I'm glad we are working together finally."

Sarkar 2, which will carry forward the story of the Godfather-like political clan, will now have Abhishek playing the savior of the downtrodden. The senior Bachchan has confirmed his comparatively lesser presence in the sequel to Sarkar.

"Right now, I can't say how much scope the three main stars will have in Sarkar 2. But Amitji, Abhishek and Aishwarya are going to be seen in a new light, they have not been cast together like this before," says Ramu. "Sarkar 2 starts in February 2007. Ironically I've got the principal cast for that project in place. But the actors to play some of the characters in Sholay, which I start in November, are yet to be finalised."

I guess Sarkar 2 will have to be less like The Godfather: Part II than Sarkar was like The Godfather. We already had "Michael kill Fredo"; "Vito" didn't die; Bachchan probably won't play the "young Vito" (it would be fucking awesome if he did, though), and Abhishek (I hope) won't. So...

I get a bad feeling that ramu is going to kill off tanisha  in sarkar 2 , and then aish will come into the picture as the kay character

as for amit, ramu should have killed him off in the first one

that seems to be a logical part of the story right? that Michael ends up marrying Kay after Apollonia dies. tho I see what you mean. He need not have killed Tanisha in his story.

I kinda like this change. It is a nice way of bringing all the tension in the family now that the black sheep(fredo+sony) died in the original.

Katrina Kaif must be p***ed off by this new development.
