One plays the Maharaja and the other plays Ratan Kumar, here is a quote from IMDB from the plot:

Quote:
Believing his wife to be dead, Ratan flees, is rescued by Dr. Saigal, taken to the palace of a distraught Maharani Maanwati, who has just lost her son and husband, but is placated after being told that Sunder is her son. For years, Ratan, who now calls himself Ramesh, works for the Maharani, and when Sunder grows up, the Maharani comes to know of Ramesh's existence, finds that he closely resembles her husband, and marries him

IIRC, they just mentioned about Maharani's husband in the movie and showing the photograph, not the actual character.

Still a double role. Still two different characters in the film.

There is no second character in the film, it's only photo on the wall.
If you consider it as double role, I don't have any argument.

there are several movies with "photos on the wall" of various actors who never have any other actual presence in the film itself. Are these acknowledged in the film credits?

Just watch this video:

The second character is of 'Mithun Chakrobarty' himself which is not really role playing (acting). Personally I would not clasify this as a double role.

Sorry but you cannot consider just a picture as a second role.

The second character is Mithun playing Mithun in a fictionalised setup -- so he's indeed playing a role in the story -- isn't he? And if this is a role, then with the other, Mithun plays two roles in the movie -- doesn't he?
