finally checked out kal the other wk… its a fantastic drama/thriller
produced by sudhir mishra and directed by ruchi narain, the hka team deliver again
the opening parts of the film make it seem like it is abt to settle into one of those buddy/relationship films but it quickly takes a turn for the serious and ends up being more a film abt the murky side of mumbai high class society. the story is basically abt a reporter(ram kapoor) who is attempting to break a big story abt a high profile murder and a woman(chitrangada) who is stuck right in the middle of it. the story is very engrossing and there are many twists/turns throughout
the two leads of the film are brilliant - chitrangada is terrific as the jilted lover, even better than hka (it is really too bad that she is gone) while ram kapoor gives another good performance after hka. it also features some solid supporting performances - shiney, saurabh shukla, murad ali but especially sarika (can’t wait to see 'parzania')
the script by ruchi narain is another strong point - it has a really intricate and complex plot, blending a love story, corporate power struggle and murder mystery. it also has a very interesting (and somewhat erratic) narrative style - there is lots to follow w/ the story constantly switching from present to past events - but it works well w/ the film, as the characters are trying to piece together all the facts of the mystery
and this brings me to my next point, the editing is excellent - the film switches between news reports/home videos/interviews/documented footage/present events w/out once seeming muddled - the editing is absolutely seamless
prakash kutty cinematography is also impressive, providing a documentary look in many portions of the film
this is basically the film that 'page 3' wanted to be..
9/10
the best film of 2005 imo, along w/ hka and d
