3 Big films.
Garam Masala on Nov 1 (Tuesday) at Toronto Albion-Woodside.
Kyun Ki on Nov 2 (Wed) at Toronto-Woodside. (Added later: In Ottawa AMC from Nov 3)
Shaadi # 1 on Nov 3 (Thursday) at Toronto-Woodside
No listing of any of these three biggies in A1 theatres. At least not for Nov 1, 2, 3.

I'd rather wait for Friday (Nov 4) listings in case any of these films make it to a Dolby Digital theatre like Square One or Famous Players or Cineplex Odeon??

These 3 big films may very well be playing in A1 theatres starting today??

Although http://www.cinemaclock.com/ doesn't list these three films playing this week, I found Kuon Ki listed in the newspaper listings as starting Thursday at AMC Kanata (Ottawa). :D
-----------------
And, Yes WATER is starting Nov 4 in Canada as I posted some time back. After Canadian Run, Deepa Mehta takes it to UK, then to the rest of Europe and sometime in 2006 to US.

(BTW, Water already had Ottawa premiere some two weeks back that I found out too late.)

Garam Masala looks like it could be a winner. Looks like typical south indian joker comedy. Shaadi No.1 is probably a remake of some Priyadarshan film  Stupid Dhawan, hey I like the sound of that "Stupid Dhawan"

In Ottawa:

Kyon Ki starts at AMC (Kanata) from Nov 3.
As always at AMCs, you'll get SRD, no Dolby Digital.

Garam Masala starts in THX certified theatre SILVER CITY, perhaps from Nov 4 or 11??
Let's hope they do send a Dolby Digital print and we get a top audio like MANGAL PAANDEY??

Quite a few unexpected/ surprise screenings for Ottawa, Toronto and Montreal:

1) GARAM MASALA:
In Toronto, it's playing in Non-Dolby Digital theatres. Albion, Woodside and AMC-Oakville.
In Montreal too, it's playing in Non-DolbyDigital AMC St. Catherine.
In Ottawa it's not playing this week and is starting next week at SILVER CITY, that's Dolby Digital THX certified. Hopefully, we'll get DD audio like Mangal Pandey there.

2) Kyon Ki:

It's playing in Ottawa, Montreal and Toronto, all theatres Non-Dolby Digital. AMC in Ottawa and Montreal and AMC as well as Albion-Woodside in Toronto. Even though it's not Dolby Digital, there is not much sound effects and hence absense of Dolby-Digital should make no difference. Looks like the film was mostly shot in CANADA. Lots of Fall colors and you can recognize room interiors (fire place, house construction style) made up to look like offices/ medical offices.

3) SHHADI # 1:

It's playing only in 1 theatre for Ottawa, Montreal and Toronto. But it's a good one. It's playing in Dolby Digital THX SQUARE ONE. Bravo. No second rate theatres. Worth a trip to Toronto.

4) Mujh Se Shaadi Karogi ---OR---SHAADI # 1:

(Added Later: Most likely, it's SHHADI # 1 screening not MSK. Ottawa Newspaper listings show it to be SHAADI # 1)

As per cinemaclock, it's MSK premiering in Ottawa and Montreal. In Montreal it's showing in AMC and MegaPlesSphereTech that's Dolby Digital. In Ottawa it's at Rainbow cinmas that has 1 or 2 of 6 theatres Dolby Digital. Let's keep fingers crossed that it plays in DD.

Perhaps, theatres took on this film assuming it to be Shaadi # 1?? Otherwise, why would they show a film that has already been on DVD for long time?? Anyway, I like that. Rainbow Cinemas is meant for second run films and it's good to see older films on big screen.

-------------------------------

BTW, WATER is not showing in Ottawa Montreal this week. But, Toronto has Tons of shows in lots of A1 theatres (4 shows daily in 8 theatres).

As per BoxOffice reports, Garam Masala is classified as Hit, Shaadi # 1 as average and KyonKi as flop. Overseas Boxoffice too has been really hot to Garam Masala.

But, it's interesting to see how audiences, genuine or fake, have scored it on the web (just in reverse):
http://www.cinemaclock.com/clock/ont/To ... aying.html

Garam Masala 6.3/10
Shaadi No. 1 (8/10; I saw this reviewe rating just a few minutes ago and it's gone now??)
Kyon Ki? 10/10

---------------------------------
WATER:
BTW, in Toronto, WATER has expanded to over 50 shows daily from 32 daily in the first week. One cineplex with 8 shows daily.

It's also opening in Ottawa at AMC, SilverCity and Bytown.
Water is getting it's general release in Canadian Theatres today. Last week, it was only in select cities Toronto, Vancouver etc.

----------------------------------

HANUMAN with Tabu is also showing in Toronto theatres this week and may be other places too. But, this film has been shown on TV some 12-18 months back.

Makes sense. But, cinemaclock listings description shows it as Tabu one. Must have been some mix up.

No, but film listing web site is the same. Obviously, they do get mixed up with non- "Hollywood/ Canadian/ British films".

Out of Toronto Ottawa and Montreal, Ottawa is the best place to see Garam Masala as it's only in Ottawa Silver City that's showing in Dolby Digital. All other theatres in Toronto Ottawa and Montreal where GM is showing, don't have Dolby Digital and GM has only Dolby Digital prints, no DTS.

Saw GM today, at Silver City. It was clearly directional sound from all around and tons of bass. Definitely makes this masala film a Garam Masala.

I liked the film but can't say the same about other family members who preferred Salaam Namaste and Shaadi #1 even though these two films were screened with front speaker back up audio only.
My choice is GM by a big margin, mainly because of proper audio.

Of course, it's a masala film and don't look for story or logic or even comedy. Comedy wise, it's still far behind NO ENTRY. But, Masala wise, it's ahead of No Entry.

Akshay character is villaneous type. John Abrahm does suit in his role and is natural.

F.....L....O.....P all the way..more later on...just had the misfortune to watch it in Edison, NJ...stay away from this movie folks !!!!

How can you say that when your wife's name is in main credits and also is in the film. :P

------------------------------

BTW, Dolby Digital, SRD, DTS puzzle again:

-Recall, I saw Salaam Namaste print lead was labelled as 'Dolby Stereo, SRD, DTS' and this Dolby Digital theatre produced front speaker sound only.
-GM doesn't have DTS prints so by default it was a Dolby Digital print and it did produce a directional Dolby Digital audio in a Dolby Diogital theatre.
-SN distributor called the print a Dolby DTS print?? I guess it means that that print was Dolby back up (front speaker) and DTS. A Dolby Digital print doesn't have DTS track on it??
