Santoshi to recreate history with Prithviraj

By IndiaFM News Bureau, January 08th, 2004 - 1200 hrs IST

The success of Lagaan, Gadar and Devdas has perhaps set off a trend of historical films. While the year 2004 has a lineup of period dramas in making like 'The Rising', 'Swades' and 'Kisna', the latest addition in the league of historical films is Rajkumar Santoshi's next. And No, it's not Mahabharat, the idea he was toying the last time around.

While his latest film Khakee is all set to release very soon, the prolific filmmaker has confirmed in a leading daily that his next film will be a period drama based on the life of legendary Rajput warrior and king, Prithviraj Chauhan. The film titled “Prithviraj Samyukta” is a love story set against the backdrop of violence and hatred.

Ajay Devgan has been finalized to play the role of Prithviraj Chauhan for which he will be learning archery and fencing skills. This will be Devgan's fourth film with Santoshi. The leading lady of the film, who would play Samyukta, has not yet been finalized though Santoshi has Aishwarya in mind.

Santoshi has already sent team to Prithviraj's hometown to do research work. Considering the tremendous amount of detailing and research that Santoshi does for his films (The Legend of Bhagat Singh being the best example), one does look forward to this film.

Send us your feedback on this feature

Ajay Devgan is probably the right person for the role. Believe me RKS could have done alot worse by choosing one of bollywood non-actors, I think Devgan can do a good job as Prithviraj. I'm glad India is making more historical films as Indian history has alot to tell, my only concern is that they don't mess it up with silly comedy or over the top scenes as Asoka (an otherwise good film) suffered from!

Other films they should consider would be on Chandragupta Maurya, Chanayka and Shivaji the Maratha. A film on the Sikh gurus should be good too.

I think they may be making films of other freedom fighters other than Gandhi and Bhagat Singh...Mangal Pandey (The Rising) and Netaji are two that are in production at the moment.

How many people here remember the Prithviraj Chauhan episode from BHARAT EK KHOJ ?

Ajey Jhankal (a onetime favourite of Shyam Benegal) played the role with a thick Mewari accent et al. It was superb. The authenticity that Benegal sought to convey was terrific. Hopefully Santoshi is able to seek inspiration from the kind of research Benegal did for BHARAT EK KHOJ (a DVD collection set I cannot wait to lay my hands on....apparently in the pipeline from Cinebella)...in fact there are so many episodes of BEK which are totally unforgettable, KALIDAS(hence SHAKUNTALA incorporating the Marathi theatre tradition of Natya Sangeet), RAMAYANA, MAHABHARATA, SHIVAJI, even the CHANDRAGUPTA and CHANAKYA episodes were wonderful.

I saw some episodes of Bharat Ek Khoj when it was shown on Zee TV a few years back. I regret not taping them all, we only managed to get a few episodes on early Hinduism, Buddhism, Ramayana and Mahabharata. It would've been great to own the entire collection as it calls for repeated viewing.

I remember Om Puri and Lucky Ali in a few appearances with Roshan Seth narrating as Nehru.

I wonder why this subject was not captured on film before. It has all the ingredients of an exciting film. Besides history, it has Love Story, War, Betrayel, Tragedy etc.

PRITHIVIRAJ CHAUHAN (1151)

The Tomars were overthrown in 1151 by another clan of fierce Rajput fighters, the Chauhans, led by Prithiviraj Chauhan . Lal Kot was captured and a fortress, Qila Rai Pithora, built around it in the honour of Prithiviraj Chauhan, who declared himself the king of Ajmer and Delhi. Prithiviraj married princess Sanyogita against her father Raja Jaichand’s wishes. Enraged, Jaichand invited Muhammad Sihabuddin of Ghur - also known as Mohammed Ghori - to eliminate Prithiviraj. The Rajput king met Ghur in the plains of present day Thanesar in 1191 and defeated the Turkish ruler in what is known as the First Battle of Tarain. Seriously wounded, Ghur retreated to Ghazni, but the next year he came back once again with a stronger army and captured Prithiviraj to put him to death.

Rana, if u read further... u will know about Prithviraj's one final stand before his execution. Actually, there should be about an hour's worth more of actual material once Prithviraj gets captured. The finale should be AMAZING!!

"Dus kadam aggey, bees kadam daey, baitha hai Sultan. Ab mat chuko Chauhan, chala do apna baan."

Ajay Devgan is the ONLY actor to play this role!

Ajay doesn't know how to smile, and he is ugly as hell when he open his mouth. He has over 100 teeth in his mouth. yuckkkkkkkkkkkkkkk. He is still in the industry because he is pretty good at acting. He is good at mean roles, or villain type roles.

ok if you guys know about Prithviraj Chouhan, or if u read my previous quote carefully, how do u think the movie should end???

I think the movie should have an ending just like Legend of Bhagat Singh....

for this movie, instead of showing Ajay dying, the film should end right after Ajay shoots that arrow. As soon as it hits the king, the movie should end... roll credits.

What do u think?

I think they'll have a Braveheart-type ending. Showing that he stuck to his principles til the end and never gave in.

I prefer biopics to show the story of the character until death. I was dissapointed that Asoka didn't show his life as a Buddhist and how he incoporated the teachings all over India.

Wasn't Prithiviraj the king who forgave his enemy just one time too many...which resulted in his own death?

ok khiladi since u asked, i'll spoil the story for u.

So yeah he was a good king who wanted to marry a princess named Samyukta. The girl's father wouldn't allow the marriage and just to show insult to Prithviraj, he made up a statue of prithviraj and put it on the entrance to his court (symbolizing that Prithviraj is his doorman). On the day of the princess' swayamwar, Prithviraj came disguised as a doorman and hid behind his own statue. He then managed to take the princess and run away to rule his kingdom.

Some years later Prithviraj gets involved in a serious of battles with a foreign ruler (possibly an Afghan ruler). He captures the ruler, and then despite everyone's wishes, doesn't kill the ruler but lets him go. One year later the ruler comes with a really huge army, over takes Prithviraj's kingdom and captures him. Prithviraj is then taken to the foreign land. After some time passes, Prithviraj is punished for his rebellion by getting his eyes burned out.

The story does not end.

The blind prithviraj spends some more years in the foreign land, earning the ruler's respect and a seat at the court. An archery competition is announced and Prithviraj asks to participate. He asks the ruler to hand him the arrow himself, to which the ruler obliges. With the help of his friend, Prithviraj manages to memorize the exact position of the seated king (look at the quote i posted above), and when it comes time to shoot the arrow, he turns around and lets his arrow loose. The arrow hits the king, bullseye, and the ruler is dead. Prithviraj is now finally executed for his actions.

Now doesn't that sound like an AWESOME movie???

This sounds like it has all the right ingredients to be a truly excellent film! It's surprising there hasn't been a few films on Prithiviraj yet (or has there?) I just hope they don't spoil it like they did with Asoka...less comedy, more action, realism and character development is needed. They'll need to go all out on the budget and get their facts right as close as possible.

I was unfamiliar with Prithviraj's story and tried to do some research on the net, but only came up with a few decent links.

Ajay Devgan to commence shooting for Prithviraj Chauhan film in August!

http://www.glamsham.com/movies/scoops/05/mar/15ajay.asp

Ajay Devgan will begin shooting with Raj Kumar Santoshi for the film on Prithviraj Chauhan in August this year. According to Ajay’s business manager, Kumar Mangat, Ajay has allotted priority dates to Santoshi from six months from August in order to complete the film from start-to-finish. Mangat adds that the film will be entirely shot in Jaipur and Jodhpur and Aishwarya Rai will play the leading lady in the film.

There was speculation that Ajay was reconsidering going ahead with the film after he heard about Sunny Deol’s decision to go ahead with the film on the same subject but Mangat reveals that there is no question of reviewing the decision. “Rajkumar Santoshi has been working for three years on the subject and the role is something Ajay has cherished. Ajay is determined to make a success of his role in the film,” Mangat maintains.
---------------------------------

Any news links for Sunny Deol's film on Prithvi Raj Chauhaan??

-----------------------

Looks like another duplicate film releases like Bhagat Singh, where Ajay's film was was up against Bobby Deol's.

They will both probably end up shooting themselves in the foot by going ahead with their own versions of the films, as neither is likely to be a hit. That said, I'd rather see Santoshi's film.

Don't write-off Sunny's version yet. He's planning on shooting it in Kazakhstan with director Dr Chander Prakash Divedi (Pinjar).
