The Promo for Bunty Aur Babli is up on yashraj's website, the music releases on the 15th of April!

Looks like a comedy, I thought this film was a remake of Bonnie & Clyde, maybe I'm wrong

Well, looks like another Hum Tum in SEL/GULZAR style album.

SEL, arrangements are decent though imho.

Gulzar has let him go LOOSE here to fit YRF 's crappy mould/ashtyle!

Looks like Gulzar tok a back seat here to production house etc!

Gulzar's lyrics have been always in front seat to composer, except Rehman imho, where they seem to ride along both side by side!

Shaad Ali’s tribute to massy appeal
The two Bachchans and Aishwarya between them, in an item song for Bunty Aur Babli! By Lata Sinha

File photographs of Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan; and (below) Aishwarya Rai

Check this out for a star-studded soiree. Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai, all together on the sequinned dance floor dancing to an ultra-catchy qawwali that goes, Aankhen kya kamaal karti hain/Personal se sawaal karte hain…

“Believe it or not, that’s Gulzar Saab at his funniest, wittiest and most fun loving,” smiles director Shaad Ali as he shoots the ultimate item song for Bunty Aur Babli. “With this song, we have wrapped up nearly the entire shooting. Just one more song to be shot in Ladakh and that’s it. And what a song this is. Shankar-Ehsan-Loy have out-composed themselves.”

I completely share Shaad’s enthusiasm. Everyone on the sets is humming the catchy qawwali while Aishwarya, clearly the queen bee on the floor, is being instructed with ultra-nazaakat by choreographer Vaibhavi Merchant.

The set resembles an extra-large sundae oozing psychedelic colours on a Sunday afternoon. “This number is purely for the masses,” Shaad whispers, as Abhishek joins Ash on the popsicle-flavoured floor. The senior Bachchan has just arrived. It’s the night after the premiere of Black and his phones haven’t stopped ringing. “It’s like nothing I’ve experienced before. But it’s show time again. Time to get back on the dance floor.”

Abhishek is already there and once the awesome threesomes are on the dance floor it’s party time! They move and sway to the sensuous cadences as the choreographer pilots what’s possibly the only item song ever to feature such a starry line-up. Lest Rani feels left out she too makes a brief appearance in the course of the song.

“First Bachchan Saab and Abhishek are at the bar, then they move to the dance floor to join Aishwarya who plays a professional entertainer. This song is my tribute to the cinema of Prakash Mehra. You know songs like Bachchan Saab’s Apni to aisi taisi (Lawaris) and Salaam-e-ishq (Muqaddar Ka Sikandar)?

“Well, this is my tribute to those massy songs from the 1980s,” explains Shaad Ali.

Because the '90s have not been massy? I'm not sure I want to see a tribute to the '80s. '80s Hindi music stunk :baaa:

Go watch Bunty Aur Babli!

Sukanya Verma | May 27, 2005 19:46 IST

Jack and Jill went up the hill. And Hansel and Gretel threw breadcrumbs to find their way back home.
But the duo of Bunty and Babli never really read nursery rhymes or fairy tales. Nor did they care for boring academics or innocent adventures.

Their aim was to become famous, have fun and fool about -- as much as they could.

Making bakras of unsuspecting victims can be dangerous too. The sprightly duo is soon on the most-wanted list of the police, namely Dashrath Singh (Amitabh Bachchan). Deputy commissioner by designation, this eccentric cop will arrest B&B by hook or by crook.

Couple on the run? Hounding police officer? Boring, you say?

No chance. Bunty Aur Babli is wow all the way.

For one, there is nothing serious, realistic, logical, or remotely worldly about Bunty Aur Babli. An out and out entertainer, the film leads the viewer into the unusually reckless life of Bunty and Babli. There is no place for dull moments whatsoever.

Lets begin with Mr B. The name is Bunty. Actually, it's a pseudonym for Rakesh Trivedi (Abhishek Bachchan). A tall dude in his twenties, Bunty is a top-class swindler by choice.

True to his hero, Shekchilli, you can count on Bunty to come up with silly schemes that dream of raking big money, any hour of the day. Unlike his ticket collector daddy (Raj Babbar), this resident of Fursatganj (is director Shaad Ali Sahgal an Asterix fan?) vehemently refuses to endorse and succumb to working nine to five. He leaves home to pursue full-time conning.

Behind every Mr Incredible is a Elastigirl. So we have Bunty's partner-in-con and better half -- Babli aka Vimmi (Rani Mukerji). A runaway like Bunty, Babli aspires to be Miss India but chucks her dreams of wearing the crown to become a rocking con artist.

But you need to know that the lady is obsessed with vanity. The Sikhni spends hours gazing at her heart-shaped red and gold mirror. Her parents (Puneet Isaar and Kiran Joneja Sippy) have other plans though. They want their daughter to perfect the art of making pinnis (Laddus) and tie the knot. Babli runs away.

B&B find small-town mentality suffocating and have starry-eyed illusions about Mumbai. Mission Mumbai never really takes off. The two, however, agree on point -- conning challenges them and gives them an indescribable high.

Their antics earn the duo the status of mini celebrities in local newspapers. Lucknow, Kanpur, Agra, Bareilly, Varanasi, Delhi, Musoorie, you name it, the flamboyant couple loot all and sundry. From parading as food inspectors to hoax sadhus to playing potential hotel buyers, B&B loot malls, restaurants, hotels and banks.

Some of the cons are predictable but most are refreshingly original and rollickingly presented.

The coolest conspiracy involves Babli dancing with an auburn-wigged investor to Ramba ho while Bunty sweeps the cash. The entire sequence is sidesplitting.

Another highly amusing fraud B&B must be patted on the back for is when they give the Taj Mahal on lease to a bald American and his tanned wife for five years.

Aditya Chopra's story slices a bit of Bonnie And Clyde and a lot of Catch Me If You Can, soaks it in Indian essence and dishes out a delicious dessert. The appeal is very earthy -- be it in terms of language, clothing or sets. Plus, the theme of desiring big and wanting fun is relevant to today's youth everywhere.

Another noticeable feature is that a lot of attention is paid on detailing and structuring the two lead protagonists' character sketches. Besides their onscreen tricks, the viewer immediately notices the appearance of the actors.

Bunty wears white tees under flashy half-sleeved unbuttoned shirts. A showy metallic calculator watch sits atop a vibrant wristband. Babli's wardrobe comprises bright-coloured, heavily sequined, collared, short Haryanvi kurtas and salwars. And she carries a red, embroidered sack around her neck.

The screen is flushed with brilliant colours and a rustic flavour is maintained even during slick dance numbers. The rawness of which can be seen in the item song, Kajrare naina featuring Aishwarya Rai along with Amitabh and Abhishek Bachchan.

The spicy ditty is awkwardly introduced into the movie. But once the song begins to roll, the audience, the Bachchans, the extras in the frame all end up drooling in unison at the hot, hot, hot Aishwarya Rai. Yes folks, she looks awesome. This one is truly an 'item'.

Post interval, the film trails off for a bit. There is a brief lapse for melodrama. Fortunately, the slip is short as Bunty and Babli get back to action.

The humour is light-hearted and spontaneous. The ideology behind conning is comically unapologetic and tongue-in-cheek.

All said and done, Bunty Aur Babli wouldn't be the same without Abhishek and Mukerji's enthusiastic performances. The two really seem to be having a ball making this film. As seen in Yuva, their chemistry is natural and endearing.

Mukerji keeps looking and acting better with every passing film. Here too, she shows her superb timing for comedy. Watch out for the scene where she cries aloud for her mother. Any other actress would have hammed. But Rani gets it just right.

Bachchan Jr has played a small-time guy in quite a few films like Bas Itna Sa Khwaab Hai and Tera Jadoo Chal Gayaa. But this one is special. He shares screen space with his father for the first time. And the father-son duo combo is quite a treat. The two are absolutely adorable, and in the spirit of the movie, have a blast.

Director Shaad Ali Sahgal proves he knows his job well once again. Saathiya was credited to Mani Ratnam's brilliance, but Bunty Aur Babli is his baby.

Bunty Aur Babli is the perfect way to beat the heat this summer. What are you waiting for? Go watch it!

**may be a sleeping ,under dog here!

Bunty Aur Babli

May 27: Some of the best masala films were churned out by the dream merchants in the 1970s and 1980s. Films such as Sholay, Naseeb, Amar Akbar Anthony, Parvarish, Laawaris, Trishul… had the audience flocking the cinema halls.

In these fast-changing times, when filmmakers rarely attempt typical masala films, since the emphasis is more towards realistic cinema in a commercial format, comes Bunty Aur Babli from the house of Yash Raj.

Every Yash Raj film is special. And rightly so!

The numero uno production house, with an impressive and enviable track record, now comes up with a masala fare, Bunty Aur Babli, reminiscent of the non-stop entertainers of the 1970s and 1980s.

Unfortunately, Bunty Aur Babli is half as convincing as the masala entertainers of yore. Despite some of the biggest names involved in this film, Bunty Aur Babli fails to transport you to a world of make-believe. The problem lies in its screenplay, which shows promise initially, but drops alarmingly in the post-interval portions.

In short, Bunty Aur Babli, is a golden opportunity gone waste!

Bunty and Babli are two avid dreamers. Two free souls born into caged small town realities. They grow weary of being two specks on the horizon. They desire the horizon itself.

And so they pack their aspirations in worn out bags, whip a scarf of confidence around their proud necks and set forth. On a journey across the length and breadth of the country, spinning circles around the people they meet.

Rakesh aka Bunty (Abhishek Bachchan) wants to be amongst the richest in the world. He wants to be in jacuzzis. He wants to be in limousines. He wants to be a big blip on the radar of history. He wants to be the big black typo in newspaper headlines.

Vimmi aka Babli (Rani Mukerji) faces a similar situation. Does she follow the course every other young marriageable girl does? Or does she carve new fate lines on her soft-as-butter palms? In her mind, she's the foxiest thing to ever have hit a ramp. She's the hottie the world can just gape at, but never touch. So she too decides to fly the coop.

Somewhere, along their individual journeys, Rakesh and Vimmi meet, flogged by circumstances but unwilling to concede.

Bunty and Babli meet shaadi bandwallahs, millionaires, investors, ministers, hoteliers and one very, very upset policeman, Dashrath (Amitabh Bachchan)!

The world sits up and takes wide-eyed notice of this pair…

Hollywood has often produced capers that depict characters on the run. Having shades of Bonnie and Clyde (a trailblazing motion picture that started a trend in Hollywood), Bunty Aur Babli steps into a territory that very few Indian films have ventured into. In a way, Bunty Aur Babli defies the stereotype, but the format is akin to those by-now-famous entertainers that movie enthusiasts still remember vividly.

Bunty Aur Babli starts off pretty well and the story about two ambitious souls is laid out in a fashion that the common man can identify with. Their background, the two strangers meeting at a point when both have tasted failure, their first petty crime, their subsequent antics… the screenplay has its interesting moments.

The first half is breezy, though not completely engaging. The narrative moves at a sluggish pace, but a few sequences in this half are worth a mention. These include:

The confrontation between Raj Babbar and his errant son Abhishek.

Rani's interaction with her parents, Kiran Joneja Sippy-Puneet Issar.

A clerk seeking sexual favors from Rani to include her name in the Miss India contestants' list.

Abhishek-Rani's first crime at the hotel bar.

The Big B makes a dramatic entry at the intermission and you expect the film to scale dizzy heights.

Alas! That doesn't happen. Bunty Aur Babli, falls to an all-time low in the latter part. Yes, there are a few skillfully executed sequences, like the Taj Mahal sell-out and the one involving the robbery of the gold from the aircraft.

But the problem with the post-interval portions is that it lacks the meat to keep the viewer's interest alive. Everyone eagerly awaits fireworks when the two Bachchans come face to face, but their first scene together (the drunken act!) is boring and long-drawn-out and even the song that follows, with Aishwarya Rai, doesn't set the screen ablaze or work any kind of a magic. In fact, this song is a mere prop to enhance the star-value of the film.

The pre-climax, when the Big B finally uncovers the identity of Bunty and Babli, is expertly handled, but from thereon, again, the film stands on a shaky stool. The conclusion, when the Big B has a change of heart and lets off the two robbers, only goes to show that in Hindi cinema, the hero is always a hero, with a heart of gold. Irrespective of the fact that Bunty and Babli have created a nationwide stir with their robberies, the honest lawman pardons them simply because he realizes that the husband-wife con team are sorry about the crimes they had committed. Bizarre!

Shaad Ali's direction is efficient at places, but he is letdown, and terribly at that, by a screenplay of convenience (penned by Jaideep Sahni). The ease with which both Bunty and Babli commit crimes, that too at an alarming rate, only goes to show that the writer is completely clueless about the law and order situation in the country or perhaps, he's under the impression that lawbreakers and conmen rule this nation!

Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's music is another drawback. In view of the fact that every Yash Raj product is embellished with a sparkling musical score, the music of Bunty Aur Babli is a complete downer. 'Dhadak Dhadak… Tujhe Bulaye Re' (at the very start of the film) is the sole track that you wish to hum after the show has ended. The songs are well filmed, no doubt, but none have those mesmerizing qualities that Yash Raj products always boast of.

Cinematography (Abhik Mukhopadhyay) is of a high quality. The sound design (Anuj Mathur) is appropriate.

Despite the fact that Bunty Aur Babli doesn't really demand histrionics from any of the actors, it must be said that the three principal characters, Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan and Rani Mukerji, deliver top notch performances.

Amitabh is convincing in a role that suits him to the T. However, the hardcore fans of the veteran may feel disappointed since he doesn't really get much scope in terms of screen-time. Abhishek Bachchan is wonderful. The actor is getting better with every release. He handles the light moments with the same sincerity with which he handles the emotional ones. Rani Mukerji is superb. The actor sinks her teeth into this role and comes out with flying colors.

The film has a number of characters, but the ones who register the maximum impact are Raj Babbar, Punit Issar, Kiran Joneja Sippy and Rameshwari. Prem Chopra and Pratima Kazmi are alright.

On the whole, BUNTY AUR BABLI just doesn't have the meat to enthrall the moviegoers. At the box-office, the film has taken an excellent start due to two reasons -- the Yash Raj brand and the fact that the two Bachchans have been teamed for the first time. While the first weekend will witness 'House Full' boards outside the single screens as well as the multiplexes, the film doesn't have the power to sustain after the initial curiosity subsides. Monday onwards, the collections should come crashing down. Disappointing!

Guess Taran didn't get the money for this and wasn't able to jack off during the movie.

Anyway, seems like a fun film from all other reviews so hope to catch it soon.

Certainly inspired fare, but efficient writing by Aditya Chopra. Jaideep Shahni's dialogues are great. If people remember him from COMPANY he pulls another good one here.

Bachchan Sr. and Jr. are cool on screen together. THe old man is certainly an institution but the chip of the old block, holds his own. Mukherjee is super cool as ever.

Does drag in parts post interval, but the good things more than make up for it. I for one loved the way they ended the movie, and the video with Big B should have been shot on film instead of video. Its such a delicious chance gone waste !

Certainly worth at least a watch......and Taran Adarsh is such a turd !
