Top 10 Films of 2004

Selection by: Planet Bollywood Staff
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
# Movie Starring Music Director
10 Yuva Ajay Devgan, Vivek Oberoi, Abhishek Bachchan, Rani Mukherjee, Kareena Kapoor and Esha Deol A.R. Rahman Mani Ratnam
Yuva is fiercely violent, rugged, and very stylish and a must see for all Mani Ratnam fans.

9 Hum Tum Saif Ali Khan, Rani Mukherji, Kiron Kher, Rishi Kapoor and Rati Agnihotri. Special Appearances by; Jimmy Shergill, Abhishek Bachchan, Shenaz and Isha Koppikar Jatin-Lalit Kunal Kohli
This light romantic comedy more than made up for what director Kunal Kohli lacked in his debut effort.

8 Veer - Zaara Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta, Rani Mukherjee, Kiron Kher, Divya Dutta, Amitabh Bachchan, Hema Malini, Zohra Sehgal, Boman Irani, Anupam Kher, and Akhilendra Mishra
Late Madan Mohan, re-created by Sanjeev Kohli Yash Chopra
Yash Chopra's latest directorial effort was classy and all one would expect from a Chopra film.

7 Raincoat Ajay Devgan, Aishwarya Rai, Samir Dharmadhikari, Annu Kapoor Debojyoti Misra Rituparno Ghosh
With its extraordinarily original script, splendidly simple storytelling, and award-worthy performances, the film stands tall as one of the best films of the year.

6 Phir Milenge Shilpa Shetty, Abhishek Bachchan, Salman Khan, Mita Vashist, Naseer, Somayajulu Shankar, Ehsaan, Loy, Nikhil-Vinay, Bhavathi Raja Revathy
Phir Milenge was an astounding effort by Revathy directing a sensitive subject and bringing out a side of Shilpa Shetty we don't get to see often.

5 Khakee Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Pradha, Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgan, Aishwarya Rai, Tusshar Kapoor, Atul Kulkarni, D. Santosh, Tanuja and Special Appearance by Lara Dutta Ram Sampat Raj Kumar Santoshi
Raj Kumar Santoshi brought together some of the industry's biggest talented in a taut cop drama but Khakee will probably be most remebered for Tusshar Kapoor's performance.

4 Ek Hasina Thi Urmila Matondkar, Saif Ali Khan, Seema Biswas No Songs Sriram Raghavan
Ram Gopal Varma opened 2004 with a bang as his protégé Sriram Raghavan directed a brilliant thriller that only Urmila could make as great as it was.

3 Swades Shahrukh Khan, Gayatri Joshi, Kishori Balal, Rajesh Vivek, Dayashankar Pandey A.R. Rahman Ashutosh Gowariker
Ashutosh Gowariker may not have received the great acclaim he did with his last film, "Lagaan", but 'Swades' was no less a masterpiece than the former.

2 Maqbool Irfan Khan, Tabu, Pankaj Kapoor, Om Puri, Naseeruddin Shah, Piyush Mishra, Masumi Makhija, Ajay Gehi Vishal Bhardwaj Vishal Bhardwaj

Vishal Bhardwaj's critically acclaimed venture received great accoloades as an adapation of William Shakespear's Macbeth.

As long as MAQBOOL is #1 and VZ close to #10, I can live with the rest. 8)

sorry anwar miyan:

And, Favourite Movie of 2004 was:
Main Hoon Na
Starring: Shahrukh Khan, Suneil Shetty, Sushmita Sen, Zayed Khan, Amrita Rao, Kirron Kher, Boman Irani, Bindu, Satish Shah, Special Appearances by Naseeruddin Shah, Kabir Bedi & Tabu
Director: Farah Khan
Music: Anu Malik

As usual, numero uno is so hard to pick and though Main Hoon Na won't be remembered for its superlative quality it will be for having almost every quality the Indian movie goer is looking for and making it all fit together at that.

I'm not doubting you that Main Hoon Na was good, but cut the stupid fight scenes from the beginning and also at the end then i'll agree it's in the top 10 but not number one. Did you see how bad the fight scenes were done, you have to agree with me on that note.

Absolutely agree with you Raj_d! MHN's fight scenes unrealistically defy gravity and are badly choreographed with poor sound effects, thus the movie becomes a joke and the fight scenes did not fit well together to the drama of film.

"unrealistically defy gravity" - come-on how do you then justify Matrix or even superman ( among a host of other superheroes ) flying around. Main Hoon Na was/is a "fantasy film" - that’s what its designed/produced/directed and distributed for !, to think otherwise is to merely insult your own intelligence. I for one liked Main Hoon Na ( though its not my regular cup of tea), in my books it definitely achieved what it set out to do - i.e. entertain audience (Think of it as a staged circus ).

BTW - I loved the scene when they play the violin every time gorgeous Suhsmita walks in and also the credits at the end of the movie was done very well. Anytime a movie “suspends my disbelief” I say it’s a good movie.

I dont want to start a personal fight here, Sorry if my statement on "intelligence" sounded rude - it was NOT my intention to target anyones intelligence.

Also, I don’t want to type-in the differences between a formalistic cinema, expressionist cinema and escapist cinema ( 99% of all bollywood films are !) . Sharuk Khan might not be a superhero per-se, but he has all the traits of it - In 'escapist cinema' there are no "heroes", only "super heroes" disguised as "heroes" and Sharuk khan ( u like it or not) IS a superhero ( even though he wears his undies under his pants !) . Its been long time since i saw the film and but i definitely remember having thought of the film as a "spoof" ( and hence the out-of-the world theatrics !) of all bollywood "super" films before that. It has a "super" hero , it has a dance choreographer as its director, it has "corny" music , it has "clichéd" story etc. etc. all packaged as a wholesome entertainer. In my eyes “Main Hoon Na” is Bollywood and hence it IS justified to be the #1 Bollywood film of 2004.

dvdisoil, you are entitled to your personal opinion here as respectfuly as any one else! You are Welcome!

I dont understand why all the threads here are becoming a personal mahabharat with offensive remarks? unfortunately?
It is sad!

I think, people can still say/word their opinion and sentiments without stepping and crushing other's toes whoever comes in their way.

Bollywood is Bollywood, I agree with you.

MHN was formula film, I liked it too, but wont rate it beyond 7ish/10.

Maqbool, on the other end was meaningful cinema, same EHT was very well done ,sensible film, and they do deserve due credit.

If you go by FF awards criteria, MHN is #1 or VZ and every one related to those!and I did not enjoy VZ though!

If you go by QUALITY CINEMA/OSCARS criteria, then MAQBOOL, EHT were way better films.

I hope you feel better? 8) Pls continue giving us your valuable input.

Their list rated:

10. Yuva **1/2 / C+
9. Hum Tum ** / C
8. Veer Zaara *** / B
7. Raincoat (haven't seen)
6. Phir Milenge ** / C-
5. Khakee *** / B
4. Ek Hasina Thi *** / B
3. Swades ***1/2 / A- (maybe less, need time to register it)
2. Maqbool ***1/2 / A- (best film of the year IMO)
1. Main Hoon Naa *** / B

I suppose it's a decent roster, although what the hell is Phir Milenge doing there?

I have not seen Dev but as for Lakshya, it was ok a bit too long and Hrithik performance, i saw a little of the character he played in Koi Mil Gaya so that was a bit of a distraction.
