My sister told me that the Malayalam super-hit film "Godfather," a top grosser in south india, was being remade by Priyadarsan. Just like the other Malayalam hit "Ramji Rav Speaking," remade into "Hera-Pheri," this was another great comedy film worthy of a remake due to its strong screenplay.

I saw it at the Mid-Island theater in Long Island/Nassau County. It is the absolute worst theater I have been to. Forget Dolby digital, they don't even have a decent projector. So I would have hated it even more if the movie absolutely sucked.

The story revolves around the powerful families of Angaarchand(Amrish Puri) and Anpara devi(Lakshmi/fm Julie) and their age-old family rivalry. It is a rivalry that puts members of their families at each other throats. They each want to win and topple the family bond of the other no matter what the cost. So Anpara devi uses her granddaughter(Kareena) as a pawn to fake love to Angaarchand's son(Akshaye). This starts some hilarious mishaps in which every single actor gets to stretch his or her muscles. The characters were well written, and every actor did justice to his or her role. Stand-outs were Paresh Rawal and Arshad Warsi. They absolutely stole the show in comic performances. They had some of the funniest lines I have heard in Bollywood cinema. The acting and direction of comic situations was worthy of comparison, even superior to Priyadarsan's other hit "Hera-Pheri."

I was thinking that some jokes may be "lost in translation" from Malayalam to hindi. However, only with a few minor changes due to cultural and language differences, the dialogues stood their ground and evoked comedy throughout. So even though it was almost a carbon-copy of "Godfather," it stood its ground as one of the funniest Hindi movies I have seen.

Just my couple cents!!!

pillairaj, you posted first reg Hulchal, but the thread seemed to be limited to reviews.
Later I did start another thread on Hulchal and Ab Bas, aiming at their surprise success at box office. Not many have seen Hindi or Malyalam Hulchal yet and hence not in a position to comment as yet.

Not too worried about the comments on the Malayalam version! I'm just interested to know what people think of Hulchul. I only offered my view because I saw both versions. I don't suppose that everyone else will too.

I changed the subject line so it's not misleading as to be only for 'reviews.

I finally fnished Hulchul, without any shakes.
strictly average o below film, with run of mill theme of south films, family fued that we have seen umpteen time. From Virasat(with drama, voilence) to Doli Saja ke etc etc.

Priya's last film hungama, i thought was bad, short of 10 minutes ending.

This one is way lower than that imho.

YTGMG i thought had a good story, but priya lost it on the way, with miscast and emphasizing more on quarrels rather comedy and Paresh were the loosing points.
