check out the trailor...

http://d.indiafm.com/videos/ram/05/zinda45.ram

this will be a horrible remake…

nothing is even changed abt it, dutt has the same look, hair and is wearing the same suit as oh dae-su

and the same w/ john,

the only difference is that instead of 15 yrs and 5 days, they changed it to 14 yrs and 4 days

I was just watching the trailer and was gob smacked! Typical SG scene by scene rip of Oldboy - I doubt they'll have the same provocative reason for the lockup and no way is Sanjay Dutt eating a big live squid!

There's also a hollywood version coming too;

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0425320/

lol probably not, but if you noticed in the promo they actually had dutt eating w/ chopsticks… now that is ‘typical SG scene by scene rip off’ for ya

oh ya, they will change that

and if you remember gupta’s ‘u turn’ remake musafir - they had the exact the same problem

the hollywood ‘oldboy’ should be interesting though, I am definitely looking forward to that

Not sure if it deals with it but has Matrubhoomi would be closest to feature something on subject along with pornography, violence and bestiality :o

I was thinking that Oldboy is just an odd movie of choice to re-make / copy. I don't think much of the depth of Oldboy will be copied; it’ll be more an imitation of style and mimicking of the characters. Chan-wook Park’s previous movie Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance I can see adapting very well to an Indian cinema setting but Oldboy – no no.

As for this remake - i just wish some big law firm steps in and sues these rip-offs , i just cant see for how long indians can get away with this "free" ripping

Sanjay Gupta would be a good victim for Anniyan. Or the Jigsaw killer.

well I agree and disagree

agreed b/c of the nature of the final twist in ‘oldboy’, it makes a bad choice for a bw remake

it will obviously be changed, which will completely ruin the impact of the film

*******************u turn spoilers*******************
those who have seen stone’s ‘u turn’(great film btw) know that in the end we find out that nick nolte is really j lo’s father, apart from being her husband and lover lol

in gupts’s musafir they changed it so we find out in the end that manjrekar is really the brother in law of sameera reddy… which really is stupid and doesn’t make an impact at all

like who really gives a shit if the guy was fucking his sister in law

I just hope it isn’t something as lame as that in zinda
*****************end spoilers**************

and just as a side point, the hw version will also not have an incest angle
it will be interesting to see what they come up w/…

but overall I think ‘oldboy’ is more the type/style of film bollywood usually remakes… it is a fast paced revenge thriller w/ plenty of style, fights, and a twist shocker ending

‘sympathy’ otoh has more of a minimalist style, slow paced and brooding revenge film… bw usually stays away from stuff like that

I am all for remakes or freemakes as long the director takes the time, effort and creativity to adapt the story well into an indian milieu and really add something new to the story

like taking a story abt an italian/amerian crime family in the 50s and adapting it perfectly to a modern day mumbai political family ie. ramu w/ sarkar

or in a village backdrop ie. thevar magan/virasat

no incest in ‘matrubhoomi’ but definitely bestiality

as for incest - benegal’s ‘mandi’ and gulzar’s ‘mausam’ are the only ones I can think of

I am sure there must be more films also

Well i am sure its ok with you or me ..., but not for Chan-wook Park and/or his production house - i am pretty sure there are copyright laws that protect artist and their creation, why else would hollywood pay for this remake ?? . I think its only a matter of time before someone steps in and sue the crap out of these copycats...

I am sure that it will happen once the market is sufficiently big (as compared to Hollywood). Bollywood is at a disadvantage here since many of the countries in which indian films are popular dont have copyright laws or enforcement worth their salt.

Just curious - was there not a tele-serial ( starring karishma kapoor or some big actress ) that was stalled because of some copyright violation ?? .

anyways , bollywood is bigger than ever and its only getting bigger and bigger with each passing year ... , this trait alone is going to get them into trouble - cant wait to see a federal arrest warrant for these copycats when they land in US or elsewhere to shoot a song - that will be icing on the cake  :bash:

There was also an Indian copy of 24.

Sahara TV to go slow on 'Karishma'
Indiantelevision.com Team

(7 July 2003 7:00 pm)

NEW DELHI: The Subrata Roy promoted Sahara TV has decided that it would not start telecasting Karishma: The Miracles of Destiny serial, featuring Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor, till the hearing of the case is fully over.

On 30 June, the Kolkata high court had said that Sahara can air the serial from mid July. The Calcutta High Court had allowed the telecast of the controversial mega-serial when Justice MHS Ansari had vacated the injunction on the telecast of the serial produced by Sahara Media Entertainment Limited.

At that point of time, the court had directed Sahara to furnish a bank guarantee of Rs 250,000 with the Registrar (original side) of the High Court.

Contacted by indiantelevision.com, today, a senior executive of Sahara's media business said: "The hearings are on today and have been continuing almost daily for the last 14 days or so. We have decided that until the full argument is complete, we'd not start telecast as we want to wait for the outcome of the case."

This new perspective also indicates to a likely change in the strategy on part of Sahara because of the fluidity in (conditional access system) CAS case where the implementation (that would have meant all pay channels like Star Plus and Sony would have had to go through a set top box) has been deferred and chaos at present is reigning supreme.

The Sahara executive also pointed out that the company is not interested in any out of court settlement and has full faith in the Indian legal system.

A case against the serial and its producers had been filed by British author Barbara Bradford who had alleged that the serial was based on her best selling novel A Woman of Substance and was a fit case of plagiarism.

I knew this was gonna happen sooner or later. When I saw oldboy, I said to myself I bet bollywood is gonna do a copy of this, as it is a film that has got recognition in the west. If this film was only big in korea, then bollywood wouldn't dare touch it.
Anyway I'm gonna boycott all of these films that are copy, but I would look at a pirate version just to have a laugh at how pathetic it is.

You know what else I think they may copy? Look out for an Indian version of 'Infernal Affairs', probably after Scorcese does his version. It hasn't happened yet, but don't be too surprised when it does.

I remember at one time a director was thinking of doing an Indian version of 'Amilie'...I'm glad that never happened!
