Mumbai: Mumbai city council on Tuesday began flattening two buildings owned by a historic Bollywood film studio as part of a major drive against unauthorised construction.
Dozens of municipal workers with bulldozers began the demolition at the Filmalaya premises in Andheri while a movie was being shot in the adjacent main studio, an employee said.
Filmalaya studio, one of Bollywood's old movie-making hubs, is owned by producer Shomu Mukherjee, father of popular actress Kajol.
"Parts of the structures that are being demolished comprise make-up rooms of artists, rehearsal rooms and a few other rooms," Vijay, the employee, said.
"A few actors are inside the studio where a film was launched today."
Deputy municipal commissioner V N Kalam Patil said the two buildings, used for storage, were being demolished because they were constructed without permission.
The corporation is carrying out a major drive to demolish unauthorised constructions, including slums.
