Which of these two films will be a Hit??

Phir Milenge with a total budget of Rs 5 cr and has Salman Khan, Abhishek, Shilpa Shetty in it. (BTW, this film is being praised by the UN, "UN applauding the lady's brave attempt at dealing with a risqué subject like AIDS http://www.indiafm.com/scoop/04/aug/210 ... eadline=-~ 'Phir~Milenge'~gets~UN~pat.")

or

Dhoom which has a publicity budget alone of Rs 4 cr and has Abhishek, Rimi Sen, Isha Kopikar in it AND YashRajFilms promoting and distributing it Hum Tum way.

I think Dhoom will do average with the total sales from the cinema hall plus the sales from the DVDs.

Yash Raj movies all seem to do average if not become a hit.

'Phir Milenge' is a sweet film!
By Our Correspondent ©2004 Bollyvista.com

We saw Revathy's 'Phir Milenge' last night at a special screening and have to say that it is a sweet film. It was rather sluggish at places yes, but on the whole; a subtle, good-looking, well executed and well enacted piece of work. After ages, Shilpa Shetty gets a role where she shows a modicum of acting. As someone who's HIV+ (she contracts the virus from Salman Khan), she displays both her agony and courage with élan. Abhishek Bachchan and Salman Khan are again subtle. Not going over-the-top really suits them! In all, a simple class product.

Well, one down!!

DHOOM
action flick

Starring Abhishek Bachchan, Uday Chopra, John Abraham, Eesha Deol and Rimi Sen

Direction : Sanjay Gadhvi

Music: Pritam

reviewed by Jox

After making a series of candy floss romantic sagas, Yash Raj films decide to change tracks. This time by making a stylized action flick giving the usual cop robber theme a motor-of-a-twist with speed, pace, and a lot of skin to go with it.

That is DHOOM in a nutshell, an action flick for all those who haven't got the time to watch flicks like ITALIAN JOB, FAST AND THE FURIOUS, OCEANS' ELEVEN and MATRIX RELOADED.

Sanjay Gadhvi gives the desi viewers the best of the mix and in turn comes up with a rather decent action flick and what can be claimed to be India's first bike flick.

Its Mumbai and a gang of four bike-bandits are giving the Police force sleepless nights and the citizens a lot to complain about. The gang is sophisticated enough to come like the wind and disappear into thin air leaving behind very little for the cops to chew on.

Without much delay the new ACP in town, Jai Dixit (Abhishek Bachchan) is hot on the heels of these foursome, a gang led by Kabir (John Abraham), hiding in the broad daylight in the guise of normal pizza delivery boys.

Jai's hunt for this gang leads him to a happy go lucky mechanic Ali (Uday Chopra) who is an ace bike rider too. Though initially he mistakes Ali to be the culprit, he then decides to utilise Ali's services when he realises that this clumsy fool has nothing to do with the well-executed robberies that is happening around.

Finally the cop-robber game between the two heats up to such an extent that Kabir throws a challenge in front of Jai by informing everything about the crime in advance. If Jai can capture the gang, hats off to the cop. But if Jai still fails to stop the gang, Jai leaves this case forever.

Obviously the film's mainstay is action and though it still is far behind if you begin to compare it with its Hollywood counterparts, this one is rather slicky and stylishly mounted to step foot in the bollywood arena. To begin with the film's pace is good, as the length is kept short and trim, and the songs do not come in and make this ride bumpy.

Sanjay Gadhvi might have taken a free hand at being inspired from all the hollywood flicks I mentioned earlier, but in the end has come up with a rather decent script for the Indian viewers. His last attempt MERE YAAR KI SHAADI HAI was a pretty decent entertainer and this one is the same league. Again, take it as an escapist cinema and as long as you dont take the laws of physics and engineering with you, one is sure to be comfortable for this particular 'need for speed'.

The first half sets in the characters and the atmosphere pretty well and by interval time we know that the cat and mouse game has gone to a higher and more challenging level. The second half has the gang going for one more big heist, things were pretty much in control.

The only thing when things got a bit too much was in the climax fight sequence when action director Ali Amin decides to recreate the MATRIX RELOADED highway truck battle with Abhishek and John Abraham battling it out on top of the trailer.

John Abraham steals the show without a doubt. Playing an out and out villain with no 'nice thing' about him, he plays the cool leader of his slick gang to perfection. Leaves an impression with every look he brows, and hits the mark with every dialogue he sparks...after doing a wonderful Kabir in JISM, John Abraham does yet another powerful KABIR portrayal here.

Abhishek Bachchan plays the role of a cop that seems to have taken a solemn oath of removing the unwanted from the society but not his goggles from the face. The role was definitely a badly written one, and when he starts off with a love-making song like that, one fails to take his character as seriously as you would really want to. But inspite of all that, Abhishek does a pretty good job of the cop and was winning a lot of the applause whenever he seemed like pulling one over John Abraham.

So while Abhi and John does the usual cat and mouse game, we have Uday Chopra giving us the comic aspects of the screenplay. Not that the character wasn't a helpful one, but certainly if there was some better talent like say Saif donning the role, one would have seen him stealing the show. But Uday just barely manages to do his stuff and does get a little irritating at times too. This rider just manages to finish through decently though.

The ladies...oh boy are the ones totally wasted. Eesha Deol barely have dialogues in this flick and Rimi Sen does have some dialouges atleast, but they aren't in Hindi but in Bengali. In short, except for showing a lot of their assets and skin in the skimpiest of clothing, the girls had absolutely nothing to do.

The music was pretty average with the title song being the highlight of the whole enterprise, but was let down by some bad choreography. Camerawork and editing were indeed slick and enhances the pace of the movie. Salim Sulaiman gives their usual touch to the background score.

YashRaj films can be happy about giving a slick action flick, and the fact that they brought home a cop and robber tale in this avataar without making a total mess, needs to be appreciated. Sanjay Ghadvi can be happy and just hope that the indian audiences feel that particular 'need for speed'!

First Day First Show Audience Reaction:

DHOOM Looking Good.

http://www.indiafm.com/broadband/04/aug ... ndex.shtml

The film opening will help director Sanjay Gadhvi wipe some of his worry. A houseful weekend at New Excelsior and smiling audience faces is sure to perk up the man whose last venture Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai did average business at the box-office.

Teenagers seem to have liked the film, while the middle-aged crowd seems neutral. When asked whether they liked the film, audiences were quick with their replies; “Yeah, the film is good.” “It’s a time-pass film”. “Not sure whether the film will work, it’s a one-time see”

Among the film elements, action has come for generous praise. “Mind-blowing stunts” says an excited guy. “The action sequences have been executed very well,” adds another. As for the songs, except for the title track 'Dhoom Machale', people don’t seem to like other tracks.

Among the film elements, action has -------

On the whole, PHIR MILENGE is a half-baked experiment that neither works as an issue-based film or a courtroom drama. At the box-office, the film has face-value to attract the cinegoers, but not strong content to keep them glued to the screen. Besides, fans of Salman Khan will feel embittered since the actor is being highlighted in its promotion, but has a mere 15-20 minute role in the film. In the final tally, PHIR MILENGE may appeal to a small chunk of multiplex-going audiences, but for the majority, its rejection is imminent.

Rating:- * ½.

Abhishek Bachchan makes a sincere attempt to look the character. John Abraham looks cool as the evil guy. But it is Uday Chopra who stands out with an above ordinary performance, playing to the gallery completely. Rimi gets more scope than Esha; she is quite likeable. Esha gets two songs and two scenes – that’s it!

On the whole, DHOOM is a terrible letdown thanks to its insipid script. At the box-office, DHOOM will lose its sparkle after the first day or two of glory!

PHIR MILLENGE (2004)

Producer: Sahara Manoranjan Creation
Director: Revathy
Cast: Salman Khan, Shilpa Shetty and Abhishek Bachchan
Music: Shankar-Ehsan-Loy, Nikhil-Vinay and Bhavatha Raja
Lyrics: Prasoon Joshi and Sameer
Audio: T-Series

RS RATING: 4/10

Background:
After making an acclaimed directorial debut titled ‘Mitr - My Friend’, the former actress Revathy strikes back with the hard hitting drama ‘Phir Milenge’. The film stars Shilpa Shetty and Abhishek Bachchan in the lead roles, however since their box office draw is rather limited, the movie is being sold on a short special appearance by Salman Khan and of course the topic being tackled - AIDS.

Synopsis:
Bollywood has finally risked a full length commercial movie tackling the rather taboo subject of AIDS. Rohit (Salman Khan) is a relaxed, laid-back type of person. During a school reunion, Rohit has a fling with Tamanna (Shilpa Shetty). Flash forward a few years - they’re both living in different parts of the world and Tamanna tests HIV positive. Naturally she’s completely shocked and realises she caught HIV from Rohit, since that’s been her only sexual experience.

Tamanna, who works in advertising, loses her job, which seems completely unfair because she’s worked hard for the company and played a large part in its success. She vows to return to work and also wants to find Rohit to discover how he’s dealing with HIV.

She meets Tarun (Abhishek Bachchan), a dynamic lawyer who takes on her case and fights for Tamanna’s rights. The climax is the only redeeming factor in the film, so we‘ll stop the synopsis there without revealing too much!

Critique:
Inspired by Jonathan Demme's Philadelphia (starring Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington), Phir Milenge focuses on AIDS but prefers to use English as a medium of communication. If this Hindi film had to reach out to the masses, it needed much more conversation in Hindi and it is a pity that it doesn't.

One wonders why Revathy did not credit with the writer Robert Nyswaner's name, when she has completely lifted the plot from Philadelphia.

Salman Khan has a role not more than a few minutes in the film, which may shock his fans, considering how the film has been promoted. His performance is fine.

Shilpa Shetty after Dhadkan gives another top performance. She is good in the film as the traumatised girl.

But it is Abhishek Bachchan who steals the show.

The audience may have expected some sensitivity from a female director, but Revathy's work isn’t as impressive as her debut.

The cinematography is interestingly done, but the music doesn't go with the flow of the film.

Conclusion:
Phir Milenge fails to move. There is no way the film will get a repeat audience as the title suggests.

Dhoom

By Taran Adarsh, August 27th, 2004 - 1830 hrs IST

Yashraj Films. The banner is a brand to reckon with today. It goes without saying that the expectations from every Yashraj product are gargantuan. But after having watched DHOOM, you wonder whether you’ve entered the wrong cinema hall or perhaps, the makers weren’t able to control this [mis] adventure after a point!

Yes, DHOOM, directed by Sanjay Gadhvi, contradicts all expectations. You saunter into the cinema hall expecting the banner to change lanes [from mushy love stories to thrillers], but this bike ride is as nightmarish as driving a BMW on a road full of potholes.

DHOOM has style, but no substance. DHOOM has gloss, but no script. DHOOM has thrills in abundance, but the outcome is least exciting. In short, DHOOM ranks amongst Yashraj’s weakest films.

A gang of four robbers is up to robbing banks, giving nightmares to the police department. The robbers commute on their hi-tech bikes – the slickest, meanest and fastest riding machines on the road.

Jai [Abhishek Bachchan], an honest police officer, is entrusted the responsibility of nabbing the culprits. He is soon on the trail of the robbers – a gang headed by Kabir [John Abraham]. Kabir and his gang transform into pizza delivery boys soon after their unholy missions are accomplished.

So brilliant is their metamorphosis that no one suspects them of being the same wicked robbers who don their helmets and commit these daring robberies.

Initially daunted by the speed and mannerisms of the gang, Jai ropes in the services of Ali [Uday Chopra], a happy-go-lucky garage mechanic and a prodigious bike rider. Ali is very different from Jai; while Jai is serious, Ali is flippant, casual.

The two don’t get along, but they decide to team up and take the robbers to task. From the mean streets of Mumbai, the focus shifts to the beaches of Goa. Can Jai and Ali nab Kabir and his gang?

Trailors

To start with, the viewer has witnessed such chor-sipahi, cat-n-mouse games time and again. However, DHOOM not only takes its inspiration from several Bollywood flicks, but also seems slightly similar to a few Hollywood thrillers [coincidental?], namely THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS and BIKER BOYZ.

The problem with DHOOM is that it relies too heavily on thrills to take it forward. That explains why the bike chase, at several points in the story, is far more interesting than the story itself. In fact, all you remember at the end of the show are some expertly executed chases [Allan Amin], not the drama.

The first half has a few interesting moments and part credit should be reserved for Uday Chopra. His constant search for that perfect woman does bring a smile on the face, while the pedestrian lingo that he uses is also enjoyable at times.

But the film goes completely haywire in the post-interval portions. The heist in a Goa hotel should’ve been the soul of the film. The crooks are up to their final act – the finale should’ve been nothing short of a novel experience.

But look at the glaring flaws in the script! The convenience with which the gang members get themselves a job in the hotel [John becomes a bartender, the second gets employed in the kitchen, the third is in room service, the fourth looks into the computer systems] gives the impression that kindergarten children were entrusted the responsibility of writing these portions.

Even that can be overlooked. But the ease with which the gang performs the heist and robs Rs. 18 crores from the hotel looks like one cakewalk. It’s as if robbing Rs. 18 crores from the basement of a plush hotel is as easy as preparing a cup of coffee. Surely, the writers need to smell coffee!

Even this can be pardoned! But after having cornered John and the cronies, the lights suddenly go off and what follows is one long chase, with heroes fighting atop a goods’ carrier that’s speeding at 150 miles an hour and then, of course, the climax.

Director Sanjay Gadhvi has concentrated too heavily in making each frame look beautiful. The film is a notch above the ordinary as far as the technique is concerned, but, perhaps, he isn’t too well aware that what the viewer hopes to watch are not gadgets and gizmos or mean machines, but a well structured story.

Pritam’s music sounds good to the ears. The title track [filmed on Esha, Uday] and ‘Shikdum’ [filmed on Abhishek, Rimi] can easily be singled out. The choreography of the title track in particular is spectacular. Cinematography is first-rate. As mentioned earlier, the thrills are the saving grace.

At the box-office, DHOOM will lose its sparkle after the first day or two of glory!

well, as indiafm has shown collection, looks like Dhoom is running ahed of Phir Milenge. Although one thing to consider is Phir milenge has low publicity, ok music than Dhoom.

Phir Milenge looks kind of old print type (not ligh) from it's promo trailers.
