Hollywood film inspired from Shankar’s film?

Was Will Smith’s I Robot inspired from our own Shankar’s Robo, a film that the ace director had conceived two years back. This was in fact Shankar’s pet project, a futuristic film set in Chennai of 2200 when machines take over the city!

The story and screenplay of Robo was written by noted writer Sujatha based on a short story that he had written for a magazine a few years back. Kamal Haasan was to feature in the lead role of a cop who would take on the machines.

But Shankar had abandoned the project as the budget was around Rs 30 Crore with a lot of special effects and sets, which no producer was willing to back. Now call it sheer coincidence that the Australian director Alex Proyas has expanded the same story and made I Robot a futuristic thriller set in Chicago of 2035!

In the film Will Smith plays a tough cop who investigates a murder which he feels has been committed by a robot. All hell breaks lose as man is confronted by an army of robots. There are startling similarities between Shankar’s Robo and Alex’s I Robot which is also being dubbed into Tamil as Apaya Manithargal.

I wish Indians would stop embarassing themselves making dubious claims all the time.
