This film focuses on Diya Malhotra (Aishwarya Rai), a sensitive girl who has spent most of her childhood living on a coffee plantation town of Coorg. Her dad, Mr Malhotra (Tinnu Anand) has struggled on his own to bring up Diya, after his wife passed away many years back.

Raj Chauhan (Amitabh Bachchan) is a close friend of Mr Malhotra. Residing in Mumbai, he has turned his home into a small orphanage. So he has now dedicated his life in helping the children who live there. Diya, who is now studying for her Masters degree in Sociology, has decided to do her project at Raj's orphanage. Soon, fate brings Diya in contact with an easy going and fun loving lad by the name of Arjun Khanna (Vivek Oberoi). Once in Mumbai, Diya learns that she will be staying in the same house as Arjun. Actually, Arjun's parents are friends of Mr Malhotra.

As friendship develops between these youngsters, Diya finds that Arjun might have a modern outlook on life but when it comes to the subject of arranged marriages, he is all for it. Like his forefathers, he does not believe being in love. But Diya does not agree with his old fashion views.
