Three consecutive weeks, and we have seen three major releases starring the Big B himself. For a fan of Amitabh Bachchan like me, what more can I ask for. First we saw Dev, then Lakshya and now we have a dosage of more controversy in Gaurang Doshis Deewaar: Lets bring our Heroes Home. So what is Deewar, is it just more Anti-Islamic/Pakistani crap, or what??

Well Deewar is the story about Major Ranvir Kaul (Amitabh Bachchan), who has been captured by the Pakistanis during the 1971 conflicts. Even though he has been captured by one of the Worlds most ruthless states, he continues to defy all odds and spends his thirty-odd years trying to escape from the barbaric Pakistanis and its ISI agents.

Meanwhile........ Back in Delhi..... Gaurav (Akshay Khanna), is living a life dealing with the fact that his father, Major Ranvir Kaul has been missing in action, and his childhood has been ruined. Everyone, including the Indian Government has forgotten its "Missing Heroes" and do not see it in their interest to approach the Pakistanis to ask for their release. So typical Bollywood Masala style, we see Gaurav aka Wannabe Rambo, crossing the border to search for his father. Perfect opportunity for our hero to act dead and get thrown over the border in the worst rain storm that anyone has ever seen.... Oh yeah, it’s amazing how his matchstick box stayed dry (you`ll understand when you watch it). Anyway, now that he is over the border, we see Gaurav fall in love with an ultra fit Pakistani bird (Amrita Arora) and spends quite some time, while searching for his father, trying to get it on with this bird.

Meanwhile........ Back in the Prison Camp...... The inmates have been transfered to a new jail which is controlled by another Barbaric Pakistani Officer (Aditya Shrivastav). This is where we see the inmates meeting with Khan (Sanjay Dutt), a ruthless Muslim Terrorist, who is neither Pakistani or Indian ??? Major Ranvir Kaul is very cautious of Khan and decides to keep away from him. Khan however is so ruthless that he escapes.

Meanwhile........ On the run...... Khan gets shot, and the only person who is around to save him is Gaurav. Gaurav and Khan become friends and agree to help each other to save the "Heroes." But to do this Khan has to go back into Prison to help the inmates prepare for greatest escape ever.... *drum rolls*

The movie is action packed, and it’s safe enough to say that the technical quality of the movie is very good for Bollywood. Explosions do look explosive and some of the scenes are on par with many Hollywood movies. However, the performances of the stars are disappointing.

For me the highlight of the movie is Sanjay Dutt. Yes believe it or not, but his roles is far better than that of Amitabh Bachchans. Sanjay Dutt takes the lead as soon as he enters the movie, and however sad it may seem, the audience actually gasped when he did enter. His on screen charisma as Khan, the questionable terrorist, is amazing. He pulls of the role so well that I only really wanted to carry on watching the movie for him. The execution of his dialogues is absolutely rated, and you just can't get enough of his hard-hitting but witty dialogues. Thats Sanjay Dutt for you though.

Amitabh Bachchans role in the movie is very subtle and the director could have done a lot more with his character. The dialogues allocated to him are very weak, and does not do him any justice. There are a few moments where you are watching the movie and you end up thinking "bloody hell, what a dude?" But, the moments are short lived and you just want to end up throwing your chocolate chip cookie ice cream at the screen when he begins his patriotic pullava.

Akshay Khanna is pathetic. Im sorry, but I dont fall for this bald hero, being the saviour of so many POW’s. You just think he is going to get into a sticky patch with them ever so evil Pakistanis and they gonna make mince meat out of him.

Aditya Shrivastav, the barbaric prison officer does a commendable job as newcomer to Bollywood. He was very good in Chaal as the main lead, and its safe enough to say that he has a lot of potential. Just hope we can see some more of him in Bollywood.

Amrita Arora, is wasted and does absolutely nothing in the movie. But saying that she does look absolutely stunning and I could not help thinking how fit she looks whenever she was on screen.

Deewaar is nothing but cliche after cliche. However much I wanted to watch this movie and enjoy it, i never got what I paid my money for. The story is pathetic, and most of all it does nothing to improve the situation between the two countries. Why oh why is Pakistan and its people sterotyped so badly by Bollywood. It seems as though I have to have a beard 1 foot long. Apparently, I have to wear a mosque hat before visting Pakistan. Why is it, whenever I walk onto the streets in Pakistan, all I hear is "Allah-U-Akbar"?? Why is it that, there are Army Officials walking up and down civilian streets that normally end up recognising you as an Indian agent?? In all honesty, I think Bollywood should ditch movies like this completely and do more to improve relations. The Cricket tournament earlier this year in Pakistan between Indian broke down all stigma attached to Pakistan. It proved to the world that Pakistan is more than just a dodgy country, but has people with true feelings, not Anti-Indian sentiment as picturised in this movie.

Unfortunately for me, i`ll give this movie the thumbs down. But, I would say its worth a watch for Sanjay Dutt. He is absolutely rated.

Faddy Rating: 4/10

Its a sad day to see a person like Sridhar Raghavan (KHAKEE) write the script for this sorry affair. The premise was interesting enough but Bollywood just does not have the creative juices to follow it up to make a seriously engaging film. They get caught in cliches and suck themselves into a cesspool all of their own making !!! Absolutely avoidable fare.
