Can anyone explain how the name "Bollywood" came about. Seems the big B finds it objectionable. Quote below is from an article from Siffy

Quote:
New Delhi: Use of the word Bollywood to describe the Indian film industry is 'demeaning' and belittles the impact the industry has made on the world, Superstar of the Millennium Amitabh Bachchan has said.
:D

And what is your take on this. Personally I find it cool. :D

As long as he acts in films like Sooryavansham, Lal Badshah and Kohram, there is nothing cool about him. :p

"Bollywood" may symbolize a notion that the Mumbai film industry is trying to be another Hollywood. As long as they keep churning out the remakes, I think the term is appropriate...

As far as I know, no other film industry in the world has "ollywood" in the name (except for Hollywood). Then there are the offshoots, such as Kollywood, Tollywood, etc. I read somewhere an explanation of the origin of "Bollywood," but I don't remember it.

STARDUST,a filmi magazine, used the name BOLLYWOOD first.

So, the credit or the blame goes to STARDUST.

Whoever started this thread, doesn't think so. Or, why will he want to know about the name Bollywood?? Lots of people who buy, rent, pirate, trade, etc. etc. in Indian films films find something in them that the Indian DVD/ Video market is flourishing. Spending so much time on zulm.net, a forum about Indian Films, is another indicator.

I was not refering to the big B but the name Bollywood. I like it and still think it's cool but still looking for the person or entity that coined the name " Bollywood" I should have given the link to the whole article, its disappeared now. Mr B went on to say that the name was coined as a warped joke about Indian Movie making and a spoof off the name of " Hollywood". :D

I have read, more than a few times that Indian Film Industry was referred as 'Bollywood' in one of the early Stardust issues first. The phrase Bollywood, caught on from there on. How old is Stardust?? I guess it was mid 70s (or early 80s) when the name Bollywood appeared first in a Stardust issue.

I think, there is a general conscience that credit for coining the name Bollywood goes to Stardust.

Sorry. I have a tendency to jump at any oppurtunity that glorifies the 'Mard Tangewaala' (Manly Horse-cart Rider). :ohyeh:

Some truth to what pardesi said. Bombay was always considered the Indian Hollwood and it was described like that many times. Why stars and film makers don't like the term Bollywood is because they take the name to mean a B-grade Hollywood. I remember a interview with Shabana Azmi in which she pretty much said the same thing - that she didn’t like the term Bollywood as it has the meaning that it's a copy of Hollwood - probably the very reason why many other stars don’t like it - they don’t want to be called cheap imitations of Hollywood counterparts :ohyeh:

But we all know better don't we, that Bollywood never uses Hollywood as ‘inspiration’ – init Mr Bund? :stupid:

I remember Shabana Azmi taking offense when a reporter mentioned the word Bollywood in an interview...She insisted he used the term Bombay film industry. :D
