Shree Krishna International's ANDAAZ, produced by Suneel Darshan and directed by Raj Kanwar, is the regular routine stuff with new packaging. The treatment in the second half, coupled with the presence of two beauty queens, uplifts the film to a major extent.
Akshay Kumar and Lara Dutta are childhood friends. Little Akshay has a deformity – he limps while walking. The young Lara is instrumental in instilling confidence in him.
Lara, on the other hand, is fascinated by aircraft and fantasises travelling in them. As their friendship develops, Akshay starts loving her and thinks she loves him too.
One fine day, Akshay gets a call from the airforce. He has always nurtured the dream of becoming a pilot and fly Lara across the globe.
Akshay reports to the academy for an 18-month training course and decides to propose to Lara after he becomes a pilot. However, on his return, Akshay is shocked to hear that another man, Aman Verma, has entered Lara's life and to make matters worse, Akshay has to approve the other man.
Akshay takes the difficult decision and gives the green signal for their marriage. But a heartbroken Akshay can't hide his emotions on the marriage day and Lara gets to know his true feelings from his bhabhi [Navni Parhar]. Lara takes a promise from Akshay to live his life to the fullest and enjoy every moment of it.
Enters Priyanka, a carefree and bubbly girl. She bumps into Akshay [who is abroad on a training] in an inebriated state. Akshay gives her shelter in his apartment and in the bargain, Priyanka falls head-over-heels in love with him.
But, all her advances and attempts to woo Akshay fail as he regards her as nothing but a rich, spoilt brat. Priyanka, on the other hand, is determined to win his love.
Akshay returns home and is surprised to find Priyanka staying as a paying guest in their house. After repeated attempts, Priyanka finally has her man. The two agree to marry. It's smooth sailing for the lovers until Lara resurfaces. The rest of the story revolves around the three main characters and their problems.
With a weak storyline and an overdose of songs one after the other, the first half just does not appeal. In fact, the first half is so outright predictable that the viewer can actually guess what the next sequence is going to be like.
Director Raj Kanwar, who has handled love triangles with flourish in the past [JUDAAI], is handicapped by not just a routine story, but an equally drab screenplay [Robin Bhatt, Shyam Goel]. The events, incidents, happenings tread the same old routine path. Also, the songs in the first half have been inserted just for the heck of it.
It is only towards the second half that the by-now-famous Raj Kanwar touch comes to the fore. The story turns interesting in the post-interval portions, with the introduction of Priyanka's character. In fact, the twists and turns in the second half take you by surprise and the events that follow after Lara's re-emergence, right till the climax, are the highpoints of the film.
From the script point of view, Priyanka's characterisation changes the graph of the film for the better. From being a spoilt brat to an obsessive lover to a person with negative traits, her character adds zing to the enterprise, making the viewer wonder what's in store next.
Raj Kanwar has handled a couple of sequences with utmost maturity, like – [i] Lara's re-emergence and the twist in the tale; [ii] The karwa chowth sequence; [iii] The climax – which is the best part of the film.
Nadeem-Shravan's music is another scoring point. 'Rabba Ishq Na Hove' and 'Kisise Tum Pyaar Karo' have a mesmerizing effect and take the story forward. Ishwar Bidri's cinematography is another aspect worth a mention. Jainendra Jain's dialogues are okay.
Of the cast, the newcomers steal the show. Lara Dutta is impressive, although she needs to go easy on her make-up. She handles both the emotional as well as chirpy scenes with amazing ease.
Priyanka Chopra is the one to watch out for. Combining talent with sex appeal, she emotes the various shades of her character with versatility. Akshay Kumar does justice to his role. Aman Verma makes his presence felt in a small role.
Of the supporting cast, Johny Lever plays to the gallery. Navni Parihar is effective. Vivek Shauq, Rajeev Verma, Pankaj Dheer, Gajendra Chauhan and Maya Alagh are just about okay.
On the whole, ANDAAZ has freshness [Lara, Priyanka], hit music, an engaging second half and a brilliant climax as its trump cards. On the flip side, a routine storyline and a lacklustre first half dilute the impact, to an extent. Taking into consideration the hype and the good start that the film has generated, the film should prove a fair grosser at the box-office.
