'Andaaz': Flight to boredom

Ashish Magotra | May 23, 2003 19:38 IST

You may have seen countless love triangles, but never would you have encountered anything quite like Suneel Darshan's Andaaz.
Produced on a lavish budget with exotic locales, beauty queens and an established Bollywood hero, Andaaz just forgot a key ingredient for an entertaining film -- the script.

The promos claim that Andaaz is an unusually emotional story. It was emotional all right! This Friday fare had me in hysterics throughout. But I wonder if that was the response director Raj Kanwar (Laadla, Judaai, Jeet) was looking for.

For those who are still interested in the story, here goes: nothing. For the sake of authenticity, it shall be narrated as it happened.

Set in Dehradun, Andaaz opens with tomboy Kaajal (former Miss Universe Lara Dutta) playing football with a group of boys. She bumps into Raj (Akshay Kumar), who has recently moved into the neighbourhood. Crippled in an accident, Raj has a fascination for model aeroplanes. Kaajal shares his passion and the two become best of friends in no time.

But a crippled hero is not a safe bet in Bollywood masala potboilers. So Raj begins to walk again. All it takes is a shriek from Kaajal -- 'Run Raj Run' -- and he's fit to participate in the 2004 Olympics in Athens.

Up next, Raj is actively playing football for his college team. Here I must add: 30-plus Akshay Kumar fails to appear convincing as a college student. Perhaps he flunked a few times, suggested the man next to me in the theatre, helpfully.

Soon, Raj joins the Indian Air Force, simply because Kaajal wants to ride in a plane. While Raj is away, Kaajal's romantic senses play. She falls in love with hotshot industrialist Karan Singhania (Aman Varma) who travels all over north India in a helicopter.

A heartbroken Raj immerses himself in work. As a reward for his hard work, the air force sends him to South Africa for further training. In the land of the protea, Raj attracts the attention of Jiya (former Miss World Priyanka Chopra).

Refusing to fall prey to her charms, Raj shows Jiya the exit. But like a true Bollywood stalker, Jiya chases Raj all the way to India. The standard wooing period follows. Finally, he relents.

Comes another twist in the plot: Jiya is Kaajal's sister-in-law! What follows next is a mix of the expected and the unexpected.

Impressive? Hardly.

Composer duo Nadeem-Shravan, who delivered hits like Aashiqui, Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahi and Saajan in the past, could have done a better job.

The entire mood of Andaaz is jarring, to say the least.

Of the cast, Lara Dutta deserved a better debut to display her talents. After inspiring performances in Hera Pheri, Aankhen and Awara Paagal Deewana, one expected better from Akshay Kumar. Priyanka Chopra alone clicks with the audience, thanks to her skimpy outfits.

Raj Kanwar's contrived execution of a beaten-to-the-death plot does not deserve any mention.

Movies are said to mirror life. Andaaz mirrors neither life nor fantasy. Suffice it to say that Suneel Darshan's love triangle is devoid of style, script, and sense.

Andaaz

Shree Krishna International's ANDAAZ, produced by Suneel Darshan and directed by Raj Kanwar, is the regular routine stuff with new packaging. The treatment in the second half, coupled with the presence of two beauty queens, uplifts the film to a major extent.

Akshay Kumar and Lara Dutta are childhood friends. Little Akshay has a deformity – he limps while walking. The young Lara is instrumental in instilling confidence in him.

Lara, on the other hand, is fascinated by aircraft and fantasises travelling in them. As their friendship develops, Akshay starts loving her and thinks she loves him too.

One fine day, Akshay gets a call from the airforce. He has always nurtured the dream of becoming a pilot and fly Lara across the globe.

Akshay reports to the academy for an 18-month training course and decides to propose to Lara after he becomes a pilot. However, on his return, Akshay is shocked to hear that another man, Aman Verma, has entered Lara's life and to make matters worse, Akshay has to approve the other man.

Akshay takes the difficult decision and gives the green signal for their marriage. But a heartbroken Akshay can't hide his emotions on the marriage day and Lara gets to know his true feelings from his bhabhi [Navni Parhar]. Lara takes a promise from Akshay to live his life to the fullest and enjoy every moment of it.

Enters Priyanka, a carefree and bubbly girl. She bumps into Akshay [who is abroad on a training] in an inebriated state. Akshay gives her shelter in his apartment and in the bargain, Priyanka falls head-over-heels in love with him.

But, all her advances and attempts to woo Akshay fail as he regards her as nothing but a rich, spoilt brat. Priyanka, on the other hand, is determined to win his love.

Akshay returns home and is surprised to find Priyanka staying as a paying guest in their house. After repeated attempts, Priyanka finally has her man. The two agree to marry. It's smooth sailing for the lovers until Lara resurfaces. The rest of the story revolves around the three main characters and their problems.

With a weak storyline and an overdose of songs one after the other, the first half just does not appeal. In fact, the first half is so outright predictable that the viewer can actually guess what the next sequence is going to be like.

Director Raj Kanwar, who has handled love triangles with flourish in the past [JUDAAI], is handicapped by not just a routine story, but an equally drab screenplay [Robin Bhatt, Shyam Goel]. The events, incidents, happenings tread the same old routine path. Also, the songs in the first half have been inserted just for the heck of it.

It is only towards the second half that the by-now-famous Raj Kanwar touch comes to the fore. The story turns interesting in the post-interval portions, with the introduction of Priyanka's character. In fact, the twists and turns in the second half take you by surprise and the events that follow after Lara's re-emergence, right till the climax, are the highpoints of the film.

From the script point of view, Priyanka's characterisation changes the graph of the film for the better. From being a spoilt brat to an obsessive lover to a person with negative traits, her character adds zing to the enterprise, making the viewer wonder what's in store next.

Raj Kanwar has handled a couple of sequences with utmost maturity, like –
[i] Lara's re-emergence and the twist in the tale;
[ii] The karwa chowth sequence;
[iii] The climax – which is the best part of the film.

Nadeem-Shravan's music is another scoring point. 'Rabba Ishq Na Hove' and 'Kisise Tum Pyaar Karo' have a mesmerizing effect and take the story forward. Ishwar Bidri's cinematography is another aspect worth a mention. Jainendra Jain's dialogues are okay.

Of the cast, the newcomers steal the show. Lara Dutta is impressive, although she needs to go easy on her make-up. She handles both the emotional as well as chirpy scenes with amazing ease.

Priyanka Chopra is the one to watch out for. Combining talent with sex appeal, she emotes the various shades of her character with versatility. Akshay Kumar does justice to his role. Aman Verma makes his presence felt in a small role.

Of the supporting cast, Johny Lever plays to the gallery. Navni Parihar is effective. Vivek Shauq, Rajeev Verma, Pankaj Dheer, Gajendra Chauhan and Maya Alagh are just about okay.

On the whole, ANDAAZ has freshness [Lara, Priyanka], hit music, an engaging second half and a brilliant climax as its trump cards. On the flip side, a routine storyline and a lacklustre first half dilute the impact, to an extent. Taking into consideration the hype and the good start that the film has generated, the film should prove a fair grosser at the box-office.

Rating:- * *.

Arsh bhai - Sanjeev Darshan are music directors (but they are shit as well!). I think you meant Suneel Darshan!! BTW, Tip Top Entertainment are releasing this movie, so the DVD is likely to be done by them as well.

Can anyone tell us if Priyanka's performance in this film was better than her role in 'The Hero'? Everyone seems to be talking about how great she is - only I can't see it.

Priyanka Chopra is one of the worst actresses I have seen on cinema. Her performances in Tamil and Hindi movies sucked and she was even fired from a couple of projects as a result of her hammy acting. May god help us all!!

PURANI KAHAANI KA NAYA ANDAAZ

By S Pankaj

Critic's I - View

The year 2003 started with a dud 'Talaash' though Sunil Darshan and Akshay Kumar were the team leaders. The film bombed and it shook the confidence of the producer-director Sunil Darshan so much that this time he is only handling the production part of 'Andaaz'. Even his choice for director is not all right. Director Raj Kanwar who started his career with super hit film 'Deewana' long back is feeling the shock of his life as success has been eluding him. His last film, 'Ab Ke Baras', that was also a launch vehicle for junior Babbar sank at the box-office. His earlier films like 'Farz', 'Dhaai Akshar Prem Ke' and 'Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega' too failed at the box-office though these films had stars like Sunny Deol, Aishwarya Rai and Salman Khan, respectively. Now, he presents his new style in 'Andaaz' with two beauties - Lara Dutta and Priyanka Chopra.

click for larger view
Akshay Kumar plays an Air Force Officer for the first time in 'Andaaz'. He is Raj the playful, young and smart chap who will do anything to woo her dream girl. Lara Dutta as Kajal plays this part in Raj's life. She wishes to fly in the sky in the arms of his Mr. Right. Raj joins the Air Force just to fulfill her dream and goes through the rigorous training. When he returns home as a man in uniform, his life is shattered as his dream girl Kajal had already married with some one. He decides to leave Kajal's world and heads for South Africa. There he meets another gorgeous girl Jiya. Priyanka Chopra plays Jiya. She tries to win Raj, but it is not easy for Raj to forget Kajal though she is the wife of someone else now. Destiny has it that one-day Raj and Kajal come face to face again. Jiya is caught between the two old lovebirds.

'Andaaz' was supposed to be the launch vehicle for both the beauty queens - Priyanka Chopra and Lara Dutta. It makes a deadly combination. Though Priyanka Chopra had already acted in 'The Hero-Love Story of Spy', 'Andaaz' becomes the first movie for Lara Dutta. Producer Sunil Darshan got the first shock when he failed to get the expected money for the film music from music companies. So he started his own music company. Akshay Kumar may have been touted as the most desired Casanova of Bollywood, but he just comes out as an average actor sandwiched between two stunning beauties.

click for larger view
His portrayal of Raj leaves much to be done and his body language is not that of an Air Force Officer. The dignity and the jeal of an uniformed officer lacks in him. The same is the case with the two beauties. Both of them look charming, but in acting and portrayal of their characters, they just get pass marks. Movie watchers don't go to theaters to look at beauties, but to appreciate their acting. Raj Kanwar has not met the requirements of the film. When films with big stars like 'Armaan' are finding no takers, then the concentration is ought to be on reality and not on showing the glamour and glitz. But, Raj Kanwar has been keeping away from the real world for quite some time. Had there been more concentration on the story and screenplay, 'Andaaz' would have been liked more. In 'Andaaz' even Nadeem - Shravan duo has repeated itself. There are some artificial songs that do not have any soul.

click for larger view
Technically, the film is brilliant. Locales of South Africa have been captured beautifully. Costumes of the lead performers are good too. The emphasis in 'Andaaz' seems to be more on looks rather than the core material. 'Andaaz' also faces tough competition at the box office with Walt Disney's 'Jungle Book 2', as children with their parents prefer to see the animation flick. And youngsters are busy watching 'Haasil' these days. Hard luck, Raj!

I don’t know what a film should have for it to be called good?? As far as I’m concerned, I thoroughly enjoyed this film in the theatre. I couldn’t have asked for any thing more.

It was reported that the events in the film are predictable. Either I’m dumb or the reviewers have ESP, I found the events anything but predictable. Even the ending was 180 degrees opposite to what I think is right. There are so many twists and turns and Prianka’s moods and intent changes that it’s totally un-predictable how the story unfolds.

To top it all, excellent music and dance numbers. There often is a complaint of unrealistic hero heroine dancing around the trees. Not in this case. Of course in dream sequence, the same thing becomes logical, as in this case.

I totally agree with a comment in arsh's post above, “Technically, the film is brilliant. Locales of South Africa have been captured beautifully. Costumes of the lead performers are good too”.

My finding: A thoroughly enjoyable soft romantic eye candy Masala Film with repeat value (repeat value of zero means OK for one theatrical viewing).

For comparison purposes, what kind of film I enjoy, here is how I score few movies that I saw in theatre:

HUMRAAZ = 10 (Repeat value: 6)
ANDAAZ = 10 (Repeat value: 10)
MK = 9 (Repeat value: 3)
JEANS = 9 (Repeat value: 3)
KNPH = 9 (Repeat value: 5)
DIL SE = 9 (Repeat value: 3)
DEVDAS (Dark film print) = 4 (Repeat value: -10)
DEVDAS = 7 (Repeat value: 0)
DEVDAS I-Max = 9 (Repeat value: 3)
DKR = 8 (Repeat value: 1)
YHJ = 7 (Repeat value: 2)
Bend it Like Bekham = 6 (Repeat value: 0)
Bollywood Hollywood = 5 (Repeat value: 0)

Rana

P.S.
I hope, this film becomes a big hit so that we get more films like this.

That is very surprising - everyone else I know think that the music is absolutely pathetic. Nadeem Shravan compose their songs over the phone in 30 mins - and hearing the songs of Andaaz, it's not surprising. The soundtrack is typical rehashes of older songs, and if soundtracks like this continue to do well, I don't think the film industry is gonna be going anywhere in the next few years.

The music may be pathetic or even the movie may be pathetic, but there was an exact match between what I like and what the movie had. The list of score that I alloted to different films, indicate what kind of films I like and based on that you can judge whether you would like ANDAAZ or not.

I hope this film does well so that they make more films like this, for me to see the kind of films I enjoy.

I'm not anticipating or anxiously waiting for Andaaz.

IBOS Network's Box-Office Report says that it has taken a good start, with some places average, and some dull.

One reason I'm not looking forward to it is the music. N-S are the only duo not experimenting, still doing the same traditional Indian drum beats. Andaaz's music sounds similar to Ek Rishtaa, Raaz, Yeh Dil Aashiqana, and HMBPK. They never change their style of music!

Suneel Darshan and Raj Kanwar were desperate. Darshan needed a success to make up for the dismal Talaash, and Kanwar needed a hit to re-establish himself after repeated failures. It’s no surprise, then, that the two of them pulled out all the stops in trying to make their latest feature high in quality and commercially viable. They signed a hit music duo, they roped in Akshay Kumar and two gorgeous models, and got a massive budget to mount the film on the most lavish of scales. In their rush, however, it seems they forgot to hire a good writer.

Andaaz features yet another insipid and uninspired storyline.
The storyline in the film is as tired and overused as it sounds. The only novel aspects in the film are small, petty details like the air force angle or the locations where the characters mingle. If the story look place in Bombay and Switzerland and Raj was a lawyer going away for training, the love-triangle would remain the same. There are no worthwhile surprises in the film, and it’s easy to predict the outcomes of various situations based on similar movies in the past. Without any suspense, the drama in the film is stripped of all its power and entertainment-value.

Raj Kanwar is unable to infuse his film with energy despite the gloss and obviously high budget. The entire film has a lackadaisical and stagnant feel to it. It doesn’t help that the editing reduces the film’s speed to a snail’s pace and Nadeem-Shravan’s recycled songs turn up every few minutes without reason. Akshay Kumar is less than credible as a college student and football player, but handles the dramatic scenes toward the second half of the film with sincerity. This performance will neither help nor hinder his career. Aman Verma is patchy; sometimes good and sometimes awful. In either case, ill-suited to face off against Akshay Kumar on screen.

The two newcomer heroines are actually the highlights of the film. Both of them show much more talent and promise than many of the star-kid girls crowding the scene these days. Lara Dutta is average as the tom-boyish flirt in the beginning of the film, but makes a very good account of herself in the later, more dramatic portions. Priyanka Chopra is stunning in almost everyway. This is a great role for her; she pulls of seduction and genuine emotion with equal ease. Both girls look absolutely incredible, though the outfits Suneel Darshan and Raj Kanwar have them wear leave far too little to the imagination. Some irony that the film goes on to preach Indian traditions.

This film has been done countless times in Bollywood before, and with much better results in most cases. The film does feature two of Bollywood’s hottest upcoming talents, but their presence doesn’t merit sitting through the film’s mundane script and tired direction. Lara and Priyanka will be back; this film’s just not worth it.

If despite all these bad reviews, the film becomes a hit, as the Box Office reports are hinting it to be, shouldn't the film reviewers change their profession??

From Arsh's post:
"CRITICS, BEST REVIEWED FILM, HAASIL, is a BIG FLOP!!

GOOD NEWS for ANDAAZ lovers!!

Andaaz does the trick

Bollywood can finally breathe a sigh of relief. Raj Kanwar's Andaaz, which released on May 23, saw a great opening and is expected to be a hit."
