Bhoot to be remade in Tamil!

Shobha Warrier | June 14, 2004 19:12 IST

Last year, quite a few Tamil hits were remade in Hindi, though none had the desirable effect at the box office.

Now, the trend seems to have reversed. Successful Hindi films are being remade into Tamil. After Munnabhai MBBS, it is Ram Gopal Varma's Bhoot that is being remade in Tamil.

Bhoot becomes Shock in Tamil.

In Shock, Prasanth acts as a married man for the first time in his career. Like in the original, Vasanth [Prasanth] and wife Malini [Meena] shift to a new apartment on the 12th floor and Malini starts seeing a ghost in the house.

Prasanth's father Thyagarajan bought the rights for Bhoot from RGV. Thyagarajan will not only produce and direct the film, but also pen the dialogues and screenplay. He also acts as a policeman in the film. The role was enacted by Nana Patekar in Bhoot.

Suhasini plays a medium, the role essayed by Rekha in the original. And K R Vijaya plays Malini's mother. The role was played by Tanuja in Bhoot.

There will be no songs or fight sequences in the film.

Shock will be an important film in Prasanth's career as he has not had a big hit for a long time. But Meena, who has been in the industry for more than 20 years, has had author backed roles like Rhythm and big commercial hits like Muthu.

I thought the Hindi version was dull and unscary. But now with Thyagarajan directing the Tamil version it will be far worse...

For Asian Horror its best to watch films from Japan, South Korea, China, or even Sri Lanka...India has yet to make a decent horror flick for a universal audience...and guys (and girls) the Ramsey Bros films don't count...

This is going to be mahacrap. Bhoot was tepid to begin with, now we have Prashant in the remake, which will add to the suckitude.

Sunny, how are you seeing Sri Lankan horror films?

Call me a "wimp", but I thought Verma's Bhoot was pretty spooky, and I liked it.

Bhoot was excellent for the way it was made, not for the story. Of course the lame ending spoiled the fun at the end

I have a halfcast Irish/Singhalese Mate at my film course in University. He can get access to the films on VHS and he normally provides an actual running transilation explaining the dialogues to me and my other uni mates. But Sri Lankan films are normally 90mins long and don't have much dialogue.

I have to say thier films are miles better then Bollywood...and thier VHS transfers are Hollywood quality too! I would recommend any film by director - Lester James Peries. He normally directs high quality drama but his last film (MANSION BY THE LAKE) was a horror and that was so effective that I couldn't sleep that night.

BFI have rights to his films in UK, so I'm hoping they will release the DVD for us world cinema lovers!!

Hi Sunny

What is the Signalese title of the movie you are referring to? I just checked out Mansion By The Lake on IMDB and it has it listed as a social drama that charts a family returning from England to Sri Lankha. Sounds more like a social decline drama rather than a horror flick! :D

I'm really interested in seeing some Sri Lankan moies - I don't know anything about movies made there. Let's hope BFI pull their finger out and release some of these titles.

Thanks,

Muz.
