New Delhi, Apr 28 (IANS) In a tribute to legendary singer-actor Kundan Lal Saigal, the Directorate of Film Festivals and the National Film Archives of India launched a festival of his films here Wednesday.

The festival commemorates the birth centenary of Saigal, who was born in Jammu in 1904.

The festival started with the screening at the Siri Fort Auditorium here of the classic "Tansen" (1943) directed by Jayant Desai.

Other films that will be screened are : "Chandidas" (1934), "Devdas" (1935), "President" (1937), "Street Singer" (1938), "Lagan" (1941) and "Parwana" (1947).

Saigal, who became a cult figure in the 1930s after portraying the titular character in "Devdas", is today remembered as Indian cinema's first superstar.

I've seen Tansen, President and Parwana on VHS - but would love to see Devdas, Street Singer and the rest of these Saigal movies. No word of these being released on DVD but at least it's good to know that there are some prints of these movies in existence.

Does anyone know if Devdas and the others are available on VHS ... anywhere?
