This Friday will see the release of Bobby Deol´s second film this year ´Bardaasht´ , Tusshar´s ´Shart - the Challenge´ and Mandira Bedi´s ´Shaadi Ka Ladoo´. Of the three ´Bardaasht´ may have the best opening.

Krishna Cottage

Another attempt by Balaji Films Ltd. to make an impression on big screen has failed. Even the low selling price of 50- 60 lakhs/territory will not help Krishna Cottage, despite popular music.

Verdict - On the whole ´Krishna Cottage´ is a weak horror fare with a good first half spoiled by a tame climax. At most the maker´s can hope for an average status.

Masti

´Masti´ had an extra-ordinary opening as we had predicted in our last column and managed almost 1.45 cr from Mumbai city, a feat which only ´A´ banners and makers have achieved. The movie is still quite strong in Mumbai and Maharashtra, a rather steep drop was seen on the 5th/6th day at many centres. Still for its price the Ist week collections are fantastic.

Ist week collections
Mumbai - 1,44,40,363 from 29 cinemas( 8 on F.H.)
Thane district-19,32,785 from 5 cinemas
Ahmedabad - 27,99,335 from 7 cinemas (5 unrecd.)
Baroda - 3,37,854
Anand - 7,64,864
Rajkot - 7,02,515
Delhi - 1,13,64,853 from 16 cinemas
Noida - 9,48,852
Kaushambi (6 days) - 4,84,879
Ghaziabad - 10,09,738 from 4 cinemas
Lucknow - 11,59,135 from 2 cinemas
Gurgaon - 18,49,200
Nagpur - 9,18,770 from 4 cinemas
Calcutta - 28,16,523 from 7 cinemas
Jaipur - 8,37,763
Hyderabad (gross) - 23,29,040 from 5 cinemas (4 undisclosed)
Madras - 12,56,515 from 2 cinemas

First week collections : 5,08,68,567 from 110 cinemas cinemas (reported)
First week total (calculated) All India 7.75 cr (Approximate) *

*Masti´s total likely to be revised in the upward direction once more information is available

Verdict - Being a medium budget movie, its certainly on its way to being the second hit of 2004 in two weeks. It is also quite strong in overseas.

Murder

The low budget flick from the Bhatt camp again, had a good second week inspite of the ´Masti´ wave.

Second week collections :
Bombay - 58,92,009 from 21 cinemas (6 on F.H.)
Thane district - 3,79,689 from 2 cinemas
Ahmedabad - 7,88,096 (3 unrecd.)
Delhi - 37,61,525 from 13 cinemas
Noida-4,83,286
Kaushambi(6 days) - 2,25,719
Ghaziabad - 3,36,254 from 3 cinemas
Lucknow - 5,09,438
Gurgaon - 5,34,300 from 2 cinemas
Calcutta - 11,80,938 from 4 cinemas
Nagpur - 1,94,529
Jaipur - 2,40,472
Hyderabad (gross) - 7,01,084 from 4 cinemas
Madras(14 shows) 3,10,493

Second week collections : 1,72,69,330 from 75 cinemas
Total for 2 weeks (calculated) All India approximately 8 cr -8.10 cr

Verdict - The first universal HIT of 2004 ´Murder´ is on its way to being superhit in some territories.

Khakee

The movie is on its way out of theaters.

12 th week collections :
Bombay - 1,47,480 on 4 prints
Ahmedabad (14 shows) - 79,999 ((3 unrecd.)
Noida(7 shows) -15,594
Kaushambi(6 shows) - 3,730
Lucknow ( revived) 87,269
Allahabad - 23,500
Madras (7 shows) - 39,818

Total for 12 weeks (calculated) -All India 27.70 cr - 27.75 cr

Verdict - The movie is above average (as per trade classifications) or semi-hit as some say, hit in Mumbai territory, Delhi-UP, South and Rajasthan or aproximately 65% of India. Fails to get a HIT status.

Munnabhai M.B.B.S.

The movie continues to be a steady earner at many centres.

17th week collections :
Bombay - 3,86,176 on 7 prints
Ahmedabad - 1,17,539 from 2 cinemas(4 unrecd.)
Delhi - (14 shows) - 65,076
Noida(7 shows) - 84,114
Kaushambi (12 shows) - 31,027
Gurgaon (7 shows) - 46,800
Hyderabad(gross)- 3,06,347 from 2 cinemas

Total for 17 weeks (calculated) All India 23.55 cr - 23.60 cr.

Our Verdict - Super-Hit (As per trade classifications). Those who had dubbed ´Munnabhai M.B.B.S.´ , as a ´Bombay Hit´ must be embarassed as the movie celebarted 100 days a couple of weeks ago and still goes on.

Kal Ho Naa Ho

With ´Main Hoon Na´ just 8 days away, ´Kal Ho Naa Ho´ still manages to hold in muliplexes and metros.

20th week collections :
Bombay - 4,84,214 on 10 prints total for 20 weeks 6,52,16,213
Ahmedabad - 49,102 from 2 cinemas (5 unrecd.)
Delhi - 1,21,868 from 3 cinemas
Gurgaon(7 shows) - 29,500
Hyderabad (revived) at Maheshwari

Total for 20 weeks (calculated) All India : 35 crores

Verdict - Super hit in India, blockbuster in overseas and now even by the harsh (but consistent) classifications of standard trade magazines, its an unquestionable hit.

That's sad, Khakee is running out of steam before it made it to Hit Status. Came close though and still profitable for its distributors, despite its high cost.

Still some descripencies between this report and Boxofficeindia report.

As far as theatre business in India is concerned:

As per Plannet Bollywood, KHNH is Super Hit in India and Khakee is Above Average or call it Semi Hit.

Boxofficeindia calls KHNH as Above Average (BB) and Khakee as Average (B1). But, this rating is not correct either as per their own rules.

As per their rules:
Allow 70% of Net Gross as Distributor share, KHNH has given a distributor share of Rs 23 cr against its cost of Rs 14.75 cr. A 56% return or Semi Hit 'A' (25% to 50%).

Similarly, Khakee Distributor share, so far, is Rs 18.82 cr against its cost of Rs 14.9 cr. A 26% return or Above Average 'BB' (25% to 50%).

BTW, look at the effect and importance of price or budget of a film. If KHNH was sold for Rs 13 cr instead of Rs 14.75 cr and Khakee was sold for Rs 10.8 cr, both films would have classified as Hit 'A1' (75% to 125% profit) by now, as per Boxofficeindia rules.

Khakee and KHNH, both have similar collections now while KHNH is in its 21st week and Khakee in its 13th week.

http://www.boxofficeindia.com/

LATEST BOXOFFICE RESULTS-WEEK ENDING 16th APRIL
9 8 20 KAL HO NA HO 20 7,02,376 35,119 32,97,54,881 BB-Above Average
10 7 12 KHAKEE 15 4,52,739 30,183 26,84,30,118 B1-Average

A1-Hit 75%-124% Return
A-Semi Hit(Overflow) 50%-74%
BB-Above Average(Commission) 25%-49%
B1-Average(Coverage) 10-24%

Overseas Collections:

For sure, KHNH has done bumper theatrical business. It ran for almost 20 weeks in Toronto theatres. It may still be running elsewhere. I don't know, when was it last time that a Hindi film ran for 20 weeks in North America, Devdas included.

Khakee did not do even half as good in North America, but still a lot better than other films in previous yrs.
