We have wondered about 70mm screenings in the past. Are they common or rare?? Or do you remember or even noticed which 70mm screening you saw??

Here is what I noticed from imdb data base:

There are 320 70mm, 6 track sound, films listed. Sholay is one of them. It also lists Sholay 35mm prints as mono.

Many films are in multi format and many are 70mm only.

With the Big Screen Big Sound theatres common these days, I wonder if they use 70mm prints if available?? Are they all equipped with 70mm projectors in North America or in India??

Link:
http://www.imdb.com/List?sound-mix=70+m ... ck&&skip=0

Look how many 70mm prints do exist.
ET, Sholay, Back To The Future, Moonraker, Never Say Never Again, T-2, and the list goes on. There are some recent films as well.

BTW, some 70mm films are listed as analog sound where as their 35mm version is DTS/ SDDS/ DD. In this case, which sound is better?? 70mm analog or 35mm Digital?? Is/ can 70mm Digital Sound??

New films in the US don't 70mm prints these days. The last one I know of was Titanic, but perhaps there were a few after that. Even when I saw 2001: A Space Odyssey last year at a midnight showing it was a 35mm anamorphic print.

DTS has a 70mm version. I don't know about the other systems.
I suggest visiting widescreenmuseum.com for more info than you ever cared to know about film.

What I was wondering was that as so many 70mm film prints are available, do the 'Big Screen Big Sound' theatres show 70mm prints if available. Are they equipped with 70mm projectors??

On Big screens in these theatres Projection comes out grainy, using 35mm films. I wonder if they use or should use 70mm prints if available to them??

Most films listed here are 35mm blow-ups, e.g. Titanic which was Super-35 to begin with. That made the film extremely grainy even on regular screens. Matrix Reloaded was recently shown in 70mm in Singapore.

As far as sound fidelity goes, digital is perceptibly better than 70mm magnetic. It is also less prone to wear and tear.

I've seen many movies in 70mm growing up, nothing beats the experience. The last one I can recall seeing in 70mm was The Rocketeer (1991) at the now closed Imperial Theater in Montreal.

Hamlet (1997, Kenneth Branagh) must have been the last major American film to be shot in 65/70, not counting IMAX films.

A film shot in 70mm and also screenrd with a 70mm film will be great.

Even a 35mm film blown up to 70mm gives a much better projection in 'Big Screen' theatres. What I'm wondering about is that as so many films are available in 70mm film, why don't they use it in 'Big Screen' theatres.

A list of 320 70mm films with 6 track audio as listed at imdb is as follows (I hope imdb don't object):

Bollywood films may turn to IMAX format

A technology revolution may sweep India if plans to convert Bollywood films into the IMAX format succeeds.

Canada-based IMAX Corporation, one of the world's leading entertainment technology companies, feels this would be possible in three to four years.

"Eventually, Bollywood films will be converted into IMAX format. It can happen in three to four years," said Richard L. Gelfond, co-CEO and co-chairman of IMAX Corporation.

"But India needs at least 20 IMAX theatres to justify converting films to IMAX format," he said.

Gelfond said the company had already started talks on the subject with some film producers.

India, which presently has only three IMAX theatres, will add seven more by 2008, he announced Friday.

Gelfond said he was impressed by India as the largest film producer, the strong tradition of going to watch films, the rapid growth of film exhibitions in the country and the popularity of films among the masses.

The IMAX theatres in India and other countries presently screen Hollywood films either converted from 35mm to IMAX format or those produced with special IMAX equipment.

He said though Japan had as many as 20 IMAX theatres, it was hard to look for converting local films into IMAX formats in countries other than in India.

Gelfond said converting a 35mm film into IMAX format costs Rs.175 million ($4 million). "In India this can be done in $2.5 to $3 million."

"Considering the huge costs involved, we can convert only few blockbusters," he said.

Gelfond was here Friday to witness the release of "The Polar Express: an IMAX 3D Experience", the first Hollywood feature film converted to IMAX 3D.

There are 235 IMAX theatres in 35 countries. The company recently signed a deal for first IMAX theatre in Pakistan. The theatre will open in Lahore next September.

Because it costs a lot more per print and the public does not care. Also, if not done from the
35mm camera negative the improvement is not great.

These days new big Hollywood films are released in in I-Max format along with their 35mm versions. These are converted from 35mm, but the presentations are as per I-Max specs. i.e 35 mm print blown up to I-Max print size that's 10times bigger film area and theatre audio @ 24000 Watts (or, is it 12000 Watts ??).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Imaxcomparison.png

35mm film area = 22 mm X 18.6 mm
I-Max 15-70 film Area = 70m mm X 48.5 mm

IMAX DMR®
The IMAX Experience® is known as the world's most immersive movie experience. Now through the magic of IMAX DMR® (Digital Re-Mastering), movie-goers can experience a whole new way of seeing movies.

IMAX® Corporation has developed a total system to re-master 35mm live-action films into 15/70 film format for exhibition in IMAX theatres. Known as IMAX DMR, this technology digitally enhances the image quality of 35mm motion pictures for projection onto screens up to eight stories high. The images are just as big, clear and beautiful as those films originally produced in the 15/70mm format.

How does this happen?

* IMAX DMR® starts by scanning, at the highest resolution possible, each individual frame of the 35mm film and converting them into digital images

* Next, image enhancement tools are used to optimize each image for printing on to 70mm film.

* Some of the techniques used to enhance the digital image include sharpening, colour correction, grain removal and eliminating unsteadiness.

* The enhanced digital signal is then recorded onto 15/70 film resulting in a visual presentation which, when projected on IMAX®'s projection system you have bright, crisp, steady and absolutely stunning images.

What about the sound?

* For IMAX DMR® releases, the original soundtrack of the 35mm film will be re-mastered for IMAX®'s six-channel loudspeaker system. IMAX® sound systems are uncompressed, full fidelity and use proprietary loudspeaker systems that ensure every theatre seat is in a good listening position. IMAX DMR® will create that immersive experience for 35mm films with clear, distortion-free soundtracks.

If I remember correctly, Titanic had two transfers - anamorphic 35 mm and 70 mm. The latter had some additional scenes and was screened at a cinema hall in Patel Nagar, New Delhi. The latest Titanic special dvds are reportedly from that transfer. The previous Titanic dvds were from the 35mm transfer.

Dolby Digital is the compression technique supplied by Dolby Labs -- Dolby stereo would be stereo with compression I think... while a stereo without Dolby-label would also be stereo but without any compression...

Compression helps pack big volumes of data into smaller spaces with "acceptable" "loss" -- as we all know, the compression by dts is preferred by some people because of the higher bit rate, but then dts takes more space because of that. if dvds were authored without dolby or dts, we would have huge huge discs, but now we have smaller ones...

A normal audio CD that you hear is normal stereo without any compression, but if you hear the same song in a Dolby Digital stereo dvd, then you are listening to compressed sound being uncompressed by the dolby decoder...

From here, if what I believe is correct, we can extrapolate to 3-channel stereo, 4-track stereo etc.

Until last year I used to live in East Patel Nagar, five minutes from 'Satyam', the theater you are referring to, but I don't recall them playing a longer version of the film. Also, since the theater was not equiped for 70mm, Titanic coud not have been released in 70mm at Satyam. I would not bet my life on it, but I am quite sure Titanic was not released in 70mm anywhere in Delhi, because if it had been I would have most certainly gone to see it. By the way all 70mm films always have a 35mm release also. After all, there aren't too many 70mm equipped theaters out there.
