Is Asambhav priced justifiably?
By Vickey Lalwani ©2004 Bollyvista.com

Rajiv Rai (Tridev, Gupt, Pyaar Ishq Mohabbat) has been quoting a very high price for his latest film 'Asambhav'. The film stars Arjun Rampal, Priyanka Chopra and Dipannita Sharma. The director reckons that he deserves the high price as the flick is very high-tech and is being made on a grand scale. As many as sixty video hours of the making of the film is also ready and will be used in the promotion of the film. Let's see if Rai gets the booty.

I am always suspicious when "high-tech" is used to describe a film.

Looking at how much KISMAT, with plenty of excellent and colorful songs, collected, Asambhav which has a similar star (actually, Arjun Ramphal of Asambhav is not as sellable as Bobby Deol of Kismat) attraction, Asambhav won't fetch more than Rs. 7 or 8 cr for all India theatrical distribution rights. Assuming Rajiv Rai does accomplish excellent Hi-Tech effects (can't be better than Rudraksh) as well as match or exceed KISMAT audio (he did it in Tridev and Gupt), may be he can get Rs. 10 cr max.

How much is he asking??

One thing is for sure, I'll spend and recover my $ 10, ticket price, from this film.

Rana

BTW, what happened to its music launch?? It was supposed to be released in March??

"High tech" usually means lots of stunts and/or special effects, a la Rudraksh or any of Shankar's movies, often at the expense of a good story. Bad special effects and poor story, why bother?

Abhay (enjoyable, but stupid)
Jajantaram Mamantaram
Rudraksh
Jeans
Nayak

Basically anything with special effects as the basis for the film or thrown in for no good reason.

Well, GUPT is one of BREAD AND BUTTER album of TIPS..always sell..

PIAM music was pretty good too, but not as GUPT!and songs were really picturized really well, dvd had one of the best colors, courtesy some special film processing..

PIAM..was not another GUPT and results showed that very well..GUPT is one of the best thriller imho. I loved the film, sound track, acting(one of kajol's best) and excellent sound track DD 5.1 on DEI dvd too..cropped but good dvd!

Arjun Rampal, imho is better actor then Boby Deol..keeping Priyanka constant between two equations.

Arjun, made it from PIAM even it bombed.
Arjun was extremely good/likeable/suave in TEHZEEB!

We love you rana for ur patronage of masala flicks besides others..
if all viewers will have a great attitude like yours MASALA FILMS will RULE ALWAYS!..PAISA VASOOL, not FAZOOL!

on TECHNICAL FILMS/SFX..in hindi films..GIVE ME A BREAK..no comments..its better not to have those SFX.

My guess is that he's quoting 2.5-3 crores for the Mumbai territory. Given that Arjun Rampal is not a saleable star, I can't blame anymone for not wanting to take a risk on such a movie. He will probably end up getting 1.25-1.75 crores for the Mumbai territory and may even take a table loss for the flick, relying on overflow if the film does well. I'm sure the music will be good. The Rajiv Rai/Viju Shah combo hasn't let us down yet. The best part of PIAM was its music.

Still not clear on your basis for suspicions..And what are you suspicious of.

I'm not suspicious - I'm downright sure it'll be crap. Rajiv Rai and high-tech? Yeah right. Shooting a film in Technovision and processing it by Deluxe doesn't automatically make a film high-tech.

To justify this claim - watch any Bollywood 'high-tech' film. e.g. The Hero. If you think its good/passable, well...then...these kinda films are made for you :p

Add Rs 1 cr (all India cost) to my estimates above, as I did not see Naseeruddin Shah in its starcast. With everything turning out excellent and a few more high ranking stars that we don't of yet, it might fetch Rs 12 - 14 cr for all India cost. This is equiv to Rs 2.75 cr for Mumbai category.

BTW, what should a producer ask for price of his Film??

If producers think, his film will get a distributor share of Rs. 2 cr after all the costs,

1) should he sell it for Rs 1.59 cr so as the film be declared Average??

2) or sell it for Rs 1.14 cr and the film be declared a Hit??

3) or sell it for Rs 2 cr and the film be classified as 'coverage'??

I guess, when it comes to money, they don't care whether their film ends up being Hit or Flop. They make their profit or recover their production coat is important to them??
