If the position prevailing in the first 12 weeks of the year is any indication of the state of affairs that one might get to see in the 12 months of 2004, it´s time the industry took some remedial measures - and fast!

Around 40 Hindi films have been released on the 12 Friday´s gone by till March 19 and this does not include almost 20 films dubbed from other languages. As unbelievable as it may sound, not even one of the 40 films has been a universal hit.

If Rajkumar Santoshi´s ´Khakee´, has been a hit in Mumbai territory and Delhi-UP, Rajasthan and South, it has barely escaped through in Bihar, CI and West Bengal, thanks to its heavy selling price. Ram Gopal Varma´s ´Ab Tak Chappan´ is a hit only in Mumbai but only for the makers who are also the distributors. Overall taking a lenient view it can be termed an average at an all India level.

The position is only going to deteriorate in the coming few weeks, given the fact that big star cast films are all being postponed till after the Indo-Pak cricket series and the Lok Sabha elections. Believe it or not, but the loss accrued to the film industry this year is Rs. 75 crores! When compared to the net loss to the film industry from theatrical business, of Rs. 150 crores in 2003, it is an alarming figure.

Some good news for the trade after a long time.Murder has taken a very good opening all over India and the reports are also fairly good. Also last weeks release Hawas has also proved to be a safe proposal for its distributors. The other release of the week Meenaxi is a wash out from day one.

FIRST DAY INITIAL(ALL INDIA AVERAGE)

Meenaxi 15-20%

Murder 85-90%
