While I'm looking forward to this film, but the line "from the makers of..." appearing on the first promo of this film, isn't a good sign. Generally, filmmakers who do as such, want people to go in expecting another gem of a film. But history dictates, most of the time, they fail. Does this mean, Dil Chahta Hai was a fluke?

Many filmmakers, good and bad, hit and flop, indicate their previous successes on their promos. It is no sign of the film's quality - despite what you have mentioned, history dictates no such thing.

yup, different from what i expected too. i was expecting a serious war movie, like a hindi "saving private ryan". this promo makes me feel as if akhtar is not going to just put indian characters in a hollywood film, like the RGV camp likes to do (ek hasina thi?).

imo Hrithik reminded me of his pre-KMG days.....as in those candy floss flicks he did with the Johar-YashRaj camp....not a good sign I'm afraid...from the promos it also appears to be an NDA (national defence academy) based kind of film.....a sort of VIJEYTA (Govind Nihalani-Kunal Kapoor) and PRAHAAR (the initial training part)....I had loved both VIJEYTA and PRAHAAR so hopefully it keeps up with that trend and does not go the MAJOR SAAB way (the most awful of NDA based movies EVER !!!!)

Sure it does. But let's be on the same line here. If a new film is promoted using reference to the previous artistic success of the same filmmaker. Obviously, the filmmaker is raising the awareness of "also, expect this to be another gem" related-concept. I just think that such a tactic is promiscuous, that said, I'd love to be proven wrong. Ethically, I suppose, it seems pretty cheap.

I agree with you that it is a cheap trick. But it is so prevalent, like any kind of advertising, that it makes no sense to judge anything because of it. If this is unethical, then so is any kind of advertising. Putting pictures of stars on movie posters is the most common way of wooing masses. And that doesn't even make sense, as it is the director and technical crew who contribute to the quality of a film. In the case of Lakshya, the filmmaker is just taking centrestage for once (which he deserves). Besides, Indian films have a whole lot of other (bigger) ethical issues that are in dire need of address.

And...I bet it was some promotions company which came up with that anyway.

Referencing an old film to promote a new vision is actually promoting artistic merit of the filmmaker is something I never thought about, since you bring it up, point taken, it's something that I never took into consideration, but like you've mentioned, it does infact arise more awareness of the quality of filmmaking over star merit. Hmm! How do like that, I've learned something new today. Thanks.

http://us.rediff.com/movies/2004/apr/08farhan.htm

He says in the interview that LAKSHYA is about self-discovery.....wasn't VIJEYTA also all about that? Confused son, embittered by his Dad's estrangement with his mother(quietely understated), turns to the NDA upon the advice of his uncle, to have a goal(incidentally which is the translation of LAKSHYA)...it was a tale really very well told.....hope LAKSHYA's as gripping !
