Sonu escapes bid on life in Pak

KARACHI: A car bomb exploded outside a golf club staging a peace concert, featuring singer Sonu Nigam and Pakistani artists, in Karachi on Saturday, killing one person and injuring six others, police and medical officials said.

The bomb exploded at 11 pm in a car that attempted to overtake a line of vehicles at a security checkpoint to get into the parking lot of the club, said Abdul Ghaffar Jumani, a Karachi police inspector.

Hospital officials said that the dead man was a 30-year-old Karachi inhabitant. Two of the injured were children.

The club was staging an outdoor musical performance featuring visiting Nigam and local Pakistani artists.

No one claimed responsibility for the explosion, and police said they had no motive. The small, maroon-coloured car was blown apart by the powerful explosion and caught fire. Four other cars were damaged.

Police blocked off traffic outside the golf club but the concert was not disrupted. Organisers said that the performance continued.

Nigam was scheduled to perform with two local singers, Fareha Pervaiz and Amjad Sabri.

A port city of 14 million, Karachi has seen a series of attacks by Islamic extremists in recent years.

I think the bomb was the Sonu Nigam starrer, Love in Nepal.
