I find it fascinating that the significance of "gay" character's and/or attitudes has become acceptable in mainstream Indian(Bollywood) cinema. Regardless of the manner inwhich it has been showcased, I would believe without justification that even the slightest touch upon this issue would cause ugly riots towards the medium. Never would I have dreamt that not only has it become acceptable to some level, but also, the appearance of such outlook has also become a profitable craze for the makers of such ideas(though, I am not arguing that it was the core reason behind each success). Evidently, the first film that comes to my head with regards to this, one of the biggest box office hits from last year, Kal Ho Naa Ho.

Shah Rukh Khan & Saif Ali Khan's unintentional gay encounter's worked well enough for me to buy the director's way of forcing unconventional light moments. And Surprise! Surprise! even the Gay community within North America has picked up on Kal Ho Naa Ho's inside jokes and have taken favour to them. http://www.gaytoday.com/entertain/121503en.asp

Jassi Jassa Koi Nahie, now a widely popular Indian TV serial, which began in mid-2003, also showcases a facet of a supposidly gay character who carries a pivotal role within the show's casting structure.

And to a lessor extent, not soo much of a pretty face with many people. And a film, in my opinion, one of 2003's most unappreciated films. Mumbai Matinee, showcases a minimal appearance of a gay character who has a hard time living a fake life and finds it equally difficult to live upto normal societal expectations. And the film even showcases two guys kissing & making out with each other.

And now, given an article published at IndiaFM just yesterday, it seems though as if other's in Bollywood are picking up on this unconventional and rather still risky platform and hope to develop something prosperous from it in forthcoming time.

For better or worse? I certainly hope for the former ideology.

Let's not forget "Paisa Vasool"
Anyone who has seen the film knows that Manisha & Sushmita were clearly a couple

Oh my! Noooooooooo Arsh Bhai. Firstly, he will have to master the English language to be able to communicate in complete sentences. :D Secondly, poor fellow will have to either rent or buy the DVD and comprehend what he just saw, and this is the kicker, he will then have use (his analytical mind?) to give a clear and concise review. Quite challenging. :D

... Anupam Kher did a very comical role, playing a stereotypical effeminate gay man, in Mast Kalandar (1991). Some of the scenes in which he is attracted to Dharmendra and Shakti Kapoor were very funny!

"Rules - Pyaar Ka Superhit Formula" - the one produced by Milind Soman actually shows the predicament of a gay couple and how one is almost forced into a straight marriage, but ultimately love wins over. Albeit it was a minor subplot, yet it was there for everyone to see. One scene where the gay man bemoans Indian attitudes towards people with alternate sexual preferences was rather touching. Similar to how eunuchs are by and large treated in the subcontinent too.

In any case it was done fairly boldly (for Indian sensibilities) and well too. It was aired on SONY too which is quite the departure from the stiff attitudes broadcast TV stations have towards things controversial. Perhaps one of the reasons the film did not work in theatres ofcourse. It was certainly not something families would want to expose their children to - at least not yet.

The gay joke that ran throughout KHNH was only mildly amusing, but Shahrukh and Saif took it way too far at the Filmfare Awards where they crudely re-acted out the final scene of the movie where the two men sleep together. That was so idiotic and in poor taste.

I thought it was not that funny...but I thought The Guru's gay joke was hilarious though!! :D ....but the bravest gay movie must be Bombay Boys and Sholay.
