Amitabh humiliated at Zee Cine Awards

By Subhash K Jha
Monday, 01 March , 2004, 15:06

It was a night to remember and Hindi cinema’s no.1 icon Amitabh Bachchan would remember it better than others.

The Zee Cinema awards turned out to be a nightmare for Bachchan. Having waded through a series of ruptured schedules to get to Dubai he found himself pushed into a back row along with his friend.

Initially the Big B had refused to attend the Zee awards function because of his chock-a-block schedule with back-to-back dates alloted to Gaurang Doshi’s Deewaar, Sanjay Bhansali’s Black, Tito’s film and Ramanathan’s Zamaanat.

Two days before the function AB’s dear friend Amar Singh requested him to attend, apparently at the urging of the sponsors. Amar Singh offered to get the Ambanis’ plane to fly them to Dubai and bring them back to Mumbai within a few hours.

It was a touch-and-go situation since AB had to report on the morning after the awards for Zamaanat in Chennai where the harried producer had arranged combined dates of AB, Karisma Kapoor Vijyashanthi and Anupam Kher after great trouble.

Because AB couldn’t say no to Amar Singh, he decided to squeeze the Zee awards in his water-tight schedule by shooting non-stop for Doshi’s film for 18 hours inside a 5-foot high tunnel, reporting for another shoot the next morning and getting into the private plane in the afternoon to make it to Dubai for the awards.

Without sleeping a wink for 40 hours, AB arrived in Dubai, only to be hustled into the 15th row. Being thrown right in the midst of the general public, the tired overworked and disoriented mega-star was suddenly being mobbed and accosted by fans while the lone security guard provided for his safety looked on helplessly, not even aware whom he was ‘protecting’.

Nerves already on edge for all the trouble taken to reach the function, Amar Singh finally blew his top. He decided to leave with AB immediately.

When Zee’s top man Subhas Chandra along with the organizers rushed forward to stop the Bachchan-Singh duo Singh gave them a mouthful.

"We came here at our own cost defying Amitji’s impossible schedules, only to be treated like this?" the politician shouted in front of scores of spectators.

Subhash Chandra rushed forward to ease the situation and apparently, slapped one of the organizers backstage. Chairs were hastily placed in front of the stage for AB and Amar Singh, much to the duo’s discomfort.

AB and Singh were pacified and persuaded to stay back. Later when Amar Singh went backstage to give away on award on stage Shah Rukh Khan approached Amar Singh on behalf of the organizers. The Bachchan loyalist refused to accept their apology.

SRK jokingly said this unacceptance of an apology was akin to goondagardi. To which the politician retorted, "When it comes Amitji’s humiliation I can be a goonda."

There was however no physical altercation between Amar Singh and Shah Rukh Khan.

The casual rudeness with which AB was treated at the function is astonishing. The organizers hadn’t even bothered to inform AB that he’d be receiving an award. When after the whole seating fiasco AB’s name was called on stage he wasn’t aware whether he was being called to give or receive an award.

At 11.30 p.m AB left the show since he had to be back in Mumbai to catch the 6 am flight to Chennai. He disembarked in Mumbai and boarded another plane without sleep, food or bath.

But is it worth his while or befitting to his stature to attend such chaotic jamborees? Onlookers saw the organizers asking India mega-star seated in the 15th row, "Do you want to sit in the front? We’ll arrange it right away."

Never one to complain, the Big maintained a stoic silence throughout the ordeal. But his loyal friend refused to take it lying down.

"Did the organizers think Amitji was a star stuck civil servant pining to view the stage from closeup?" asks a source close to AB.

Tightlipped to the end AB says, "What can I say? If they thought I was suited for the 15th row, so be it. It’s my friend and brother Amar Singhji who took offence on my behalf."

By putting India’s biggest star under a huge security hazard and by treating him with such scant respect in a foreign country the Zee awards organizers have a lot to answer for.

Amar Singh and Shah Rukh Khan have called it a truce after the latter called the politician to appease him.

Dumb article - What security risk? He should have his own security if he is that important (which obviously he isn't). The man and his fans need a reality check. He is an actor. A superstar nonetheless, but an average actor.

Not giving him a red carpet treatment is casual rudeness? Well, slapping a worker is a punishable crime. Maybe not in a colossal mess like India, but in the civilised world it is.

I didn't know you were supposed to tell nominees they're gonna receive an award - but apparently, this wasn't a competition award. What the heck is a Golden Grade Award anyway? AB the baby should be more confused about that.

To be honest with you, I found the awards quite pathetic! Hrithik deserved his award, but Urmila for Bhoot??? It was quite sickening the amount of time, the Dubai Arabs gave cars to the bollywood stars yet these same Rich Arab folk didn't want to give money to the Indian Charity that Salman was promoting. And of course we know how desperate Salman wants to get back into people good books, but at least he did something postive here.

There was too much Indo-pak a$$-kissing going on! It's good to want peace and good relations (and to get paid for your films), but these lot took it to some next level. We know that next time there is a terrorist attack all these actors are gonna change their tune, and out comes the anti-pak films, so what's the point? Is there some other agenda behing this?

SRK got an award and car for what, for being the best star of the year? Did they ever have this silly award before?

Hrithik's perfomance was good, so SAK's and Priety. Saif Ali Khan can play the guitar! I guess he does have talent. Lara Dutta was average, but she managed to look very ugly on the night. SRK was annoying calling girls from the audience who couldn't and didn't wat to dance and saying "$h!t" at various intervals, much to the disgust of my family and others I have spoken to since. SRK manages to waste alot of valuable time (this isn't the first time) of which should be given to others if he can't do any better, but as he is popular he gets away with it.

The Lifetime Achievement to Karan Johar was well deserved, but what work did collaborate on Hollywood films like "save the last dance"? I'm surprised they never gave him the award before, he is very old, he could've easily died before getting any award of the sort.

What did people think of the feature showing Hollywood Actors giving a namecheck to Bollywood? I think alot of them looked uncomfortable apart from maybe the Italian (Roberto Benigni) and that girl from "Fast and the Furious".
