Eye-candy, skin and a lot of Fardeen!

Smitha Parigi | November 26, 2003 14:41 IST

Lucky (Fardeen Khan) has lucked out in the father department of his life. He has never had a 'proper' father.

Janasheen, the two-and-a-half-hour film, deals with Lucky's lack of a definitive father figure. Built around this father-son equation is a convoluted story involving everything from super bike racing in Australia to the 1981 Afghanistan war.

Lucky's biological father Virender Kapur (Harsh Chayya), is away pursuing wealth, when his wife dies of cancer in Australia. Lucky holds it against his father and shuts him out of his life.

More on Janasheen!

How Fardeen became the heir

Fardeen-Celina's musical outing

Quiz: Celina Jaitley

Saba Karim (Feroz Khan) is a fugitive from Afghanistan. His dead son bears a striking resemblance to Lucky. Saba is also the kingpin of the underworld across the globe. A devout Muslim, he owns a pet tiger.

In an effort to buy Angaara, a prime property that Virendra Kapur owns in India and refuses to sell away for sentimental reasons, Saba has him killed. What he does not know is that Kapur is his Lucky's real dad.

There begins his guilt and conflict. And later, while waiting by a chopper on the top of a building on the day of Eid, he redeems himself.

This is one layer of the story.

Then there are the women who fight over Lucky. Bringing up Lucky in Australia and giving him the love of a mother is Aunt Martha (Archana Puran Singh). Young and sexy, Aunt Martha refuses to let Lucky go to India, join his father and inherit the millions.

Then there is Fardeen's sweet girlfriend whose father sponsors Lucky for the selection for the Super Bike racing championship.

But the one girl who has loved Lucky all her life is the beautiful Jessica (Celina Jaitley). A violinist with blurred vision, Jessica knows everyone's secrets but shuts up because Lucky's life is threatened -- at any point in the film. So in a brave act of martyrdom, she refuses to show her love for Lucky and lets him go.

Lucky returns to Australia from India to pursue his single most burning desire: to become a top biker. Under the fatherhood of Saba Karim, Lucky goes back to his old girlfriend and his bike, only to be told the truth by Jessica later, who just cannot take in the lies and deceit anymore.

After Lucky knows who killed his real father, he confronts Saba Karim.

Phew!

Added to this cluttered mélange, here is some more baggage:

The Max Factor: Jessica's brother Max killed his father because he was an abusive alcoholic. He spends ten years in a remand home and now wants to get rich.

The Biker Chick: A coke-snorting woman who insists on being called Lady. She kills and then gets killed.

Johnny Lever plays the uncle/friend/karate champ/animal lover with his usual facial contortions.

All these propel the film all the way to that elusive end.

Janasheen is Feroz Khan all the way. Even with kajal in his eyes and smart suits dripping with style and attitude, there is no hint of good acting.

Fardeen is eye candy and breezes through the film with his signature nonchalance. Celina Jaitley could not have chosen a better film. All she has to do is look good, which she does, and cry, at which she isn't very convincing. The minimum acting skills required for this role suit her fine.

The romance between Lucky and Jessica is boring. One would expect more out of a childhood crush.

The children who essay young Fardeen, Celina and Max are cherubic but one is glad that they grow up in the second reel.

The music of the film seems moody. It sounds good once in a while, but often too loud. The production values are impeccable, minus the continuity errors, which plague most films.

The bike-racing scenes are thrilling. Cool editing and music work well here. Perhaps the movie could have used more of the bike-racing story. After all, how many Hindi films have bike racers for heroes?

An interesting theme of the film is its spirit of national unity and integration. Hindus, Muslims and Christians co-exist in harmony. Religion is not an issue in the film at all.

Overall, the film is eye-candy. Skin and the landscapes of Australia are in lush abundance.

Like any Feroz Khan film, watch the film only for style.

all thumbs down:

Janasheen

By Taran Adarsh

Feroz Khan’s JANASHEEN has everything going in its favour –

* It brings Feroz Khan and Fardeen Khan together for the first time. Watching a hi-profile father and son duo on the big screen always holds a certain charisma.
* JANASHEEN has been shot at some of the most exotic and eye-filling locales across the globe.
* JANASHEEN boasts of plenty of skin show by Celina Jaitley, Kashmira Shah and Pinky Harwani.
* JANASHEEN is embellished with a good musical score. A few songs are extremely popular as well.
* Like all F.K. products, JANASHEEN has gloss, grandeur and style.
* Most important, it is directed by Feroz Khan. The name is synonymous with qualitative fares.

Perfect to set the box-office ablaze? No, not quite! Like a majority of Hindi films, JANASHEEN lacks in that one vital department that is the lifeline of every film – script. And that is what takes the graph of the film downhill!

JANASHEEN is the story of Lucky Kapoor [Fardeen Khan], living in Australia, who’s driven by the ambition to be a motorbike racing title holder.

Lucky’s life takes a drastic turn when his father [Harsh Chhaya] dies in an accident and he has to return to India for a short while. Here, he meets the girl, Jessica [Celina Jaitley], who loved him since childhood. At the same time, deception, evil and lies surround him at every step, trying to keep him away from the truth.

JANASHEEN is also the story of Saba Karim [Feroz Khan], a fugitive from Afghanistan now living in Australia. A rich and ruthless businessman, in Lucky he finds a likeness to his dead son.

Saba plays a game of hearts… unknowing to him, this game entangles his own heart when he tries to deceive Lucky by becoming his foster father, only to realise that his own paternal instincts are still alive.

Feroz Khan is a master story-teller. APRADH, DHARMATMA, QURBANI, even JAANBAAZ had a story to tell. JANASHEEN also has an interesting plot, but the plot has not been elucidated well to keep the viewer hooked on to the screen for two-and-a-half hours.

What begins as an exciting fare gradually falls prey to mediocrity as it advances. The film loses grip as the drama shifts to Australia, where a grown up Fardeen Khan hates his father for reasons that aren’t explained and which puzzle the viewer no end. For, in a sequence or two earlier, the father and son duo [Harsh Chhaya with the child artiste enacting Fardeen’s childhood role] were shown on great terms, behaving more like friends than father and son.

At this point, the songs [well executed] and the motorbike race [exciting] are woven to the script, which does take away the audience’s attention from a half-baked script.

The film takes a turn for the better as Feroz Khan enters the scene – his get-up, his dialogues, the overall screen presence, the signature tune when he appears on screen elevates the film to another level altogether. You actually start ignoring the deficiencies in the script till the interval point, for the film has some well canned individualistic sequences.

But the post-interval portions take the sheen away from the enterprise. The screenplay meanders from arresting to implausible to least exciting with amazing regularity. For instance, the sequences between Feroz and Fardeen are the best part of the enterprise, but the same cannot be said of the moments Fardeen and Celina share with each other. The romance looks completely one-sided, as Celina’s heart pines for Fardeen, but Fardeen does not reciprocate in a similar fashion.

The climax is a downer. Though well shot, the impact is not as exciting as one would expect it to be. The sudden turn of events in the pre-climax, which lead to the climax, should’ve been stronger for the climax to have a hammer-strong impact.

Feroz Khan’s work as a technician is, like always, absolutely flawless. The manner in which the director executes each shot proves yet again that here’s a veteran who believes in changing with the times. The film has style, but how one wishes the maker would offer substance as well. The screenplay has its engaging moments, but is inconsistent, jerky and not as intriguing.

F.K. products have always been embellished with a good score. The songs that stand out are ‘Nashe Nashe Mein Yaar’, ‘Pyar Hone Laga Hai’ and ‘Teri Chahat Mein Paagal Hoon’, However, at least two songs – ‘Ab Ke Baras Poonam Mein’ and ‘Marhaba’ – should be deleted right away since they disturb the flow of the story and act as speed breakers.

Cinematography is first-rate. Dialogues are well penned, especially those delivered by Feroz Khan.

Coming to the performances, JANASHEEN clearly belongs to Feroz Khan. The actor sets the screen afire every time he appears. His presence is electrifying!

Fardeen Khan is inspiring in a few sequences, although one expected him to hit a boundary knowing that he has evolved as an actor after a captivating performance in KHUSHI. Celina Jaitley looks like a doll, has been photographed amazingly well, acts better than her maiden film [KHEL], but still needs to work on the emotional and hi-pitched dramatic scenes.

Johny Lever irritates. Kashmira Shah, in a wierd get-up, is ok. Yash Tonk is alright. Ditto for Archana Puransingh. Harsh Chhaya is efficient.

On the whole, JANASHEEN pales in comparison to F.K.’s earlier works, although it has some plusses on its side. However, the plusses aren’t enough to have a successful run at the box-office, more so in the wake of a mighty opposition in the form of KAL HO NAA HO. The Idd holidays should prove advantageous to an extent, but a long run is ruled out.

Rating: * ½.

First day First show reactions to Janasheen:

The IndiaFM team stalked the exit of New Excelsior Cinema, Bombay for the public reactions to Janasheen.

The show opened to 100% collections, which would be for any Feroz Khan product, which, coming after such a long time, was riding on high expectations.

The public was expecting a product like Qurbani or Jaanbaaz, but Janasheen comes across as a malformed child, and will have an uphill fight to be JANASHEEN of the public’s heart.

* The movie clearly belongs to Feroz Khan. His presence and performance are so superlative that it is the only thing that makes you sit through the movie inspite of mediocre and flaccid performances by others.
* Celina Jaitley's skin show has the audience rooting for her. Very little appreciation for her acting talents, maybe it got overshadowed by the public drooling, which meant that the public did not notice anything else about her.
* Fardeen Khan disappoints very heavily. People feel let down.
* There is no story to the movie. Atleast the viewers couldn’t find one.
* Songs are not the usual Feroz Khan quality.
* The execution of the movie is brilliant.

All in all, a mixed bouquet of reactions but more of stinkers than flowers. Based on the audience reactions, it appears it to be very difficult for this movie to fight back Kal Ho Naa Ho, which is riding on the waves of excellent reports.

First day First show reactions to Janasheen

That's strange. Taran Adarsh gives it a Thumbs Down but the video clip that goes with it, shows audience reaction as 80% positive, most saying, "Bahoot Chalegi".

Looks like, Janasheen will be similar to ANDAAZ, dumped by the critics and Hit by the audiences.

Kal Ho Na Ho, Achhi Ho Na Ho will be a Super Hit on hype alone.

JANASHEEN creating havoc in Uttar Pradesh.
Mumbai cinema halls are also running house full.

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/arti ... urpg-2.cms

Feroz Khan noted: "The film is creating havoc in Uttar Pradesh. Mumbai cinema halls are also running house full. In Dubai, the film collected 200,000 dirhams on the first day and on the second day, collections increased to 350,000 dirhams."

-------Defending her two-piece outfit, Celina told a news conference here on Friday, "The role demanded such an appearance. I wore a swimsuit in the Miss Universe contest as well and back then I brought laurels to the country by achieving the fourth position. So why is everyone creating a hype about it in this film? I believe in my director and I know he won't portray vulgarity on screen." -------

It seems that a lot of roles these days demand such an appearance...

Further trade reports still showing JANASHEEN doing as good as Kal Ho Na Ho, if not any better. North American Distributors failed to cash in from theatrical release of another hit film (DVD already released).

BOX OFFICE UPDATE-1st December 15.00 IST

As the box office results for the weekend come it seems that both Janasheen and Kal Ho Na Ho have done reasonably well though not HIT business.Janasheen seems a coverage to commission film all over thanks to its grand opening(collections have started dropping all over).Kal Ho Na Ho has done mixed business. It is great in the big cities(expected to be 1.15 crore in Mumbai city for first week and 1.75 crore in Delhi city for first week) but average to poor elsewhere. The film is set to do Hit business in Mumbai,Delhi/UP and South, average in West Bengal and Rajasthan but losing in Bihar,East Punjab and CPCI.It is the biggest grosser of the year in the overseas circuit with around 2 million dollars coming from USA and the UK over the first weekend. Now the trade hopes the other big two LOC Kargil and Khakee will bring better box office results.

LATE WIRE-SATURDAY 29th NOVEMBER

Kal Ho Na Ho is excellent in big cities(Delhi City is record breaking) but is disappointing in the North mainly in East Punjab(except Gurgaon) and Bihar. There are also cracks in the collections in some parts of Gujarat which is very surprising for a film of this genre.Janasheen is the biggest box office surprise of the year as far as opening initial goes, its initial is better than the likes of Andaaz,Bhoot and Gangaajal, it had dropped Friday but settled as the weekend started. Rajasthan and UP are excellent.

Finally saw this film on DVD.

Critics may not like the film, but I liked it. Only drawback was Celina's dialog delivery, but I ignored that as I already knew of that. Most of Celina's part is Song/ Dance for which, as always, playback singers are used. So, passable. Masala film.

Rana

BTW, Feroz Khan was good in his role. Fardeen too.

Was it TEENA character that supporting actress Hiranavi played??
