The Rising, being made in English as well as in Hindi, would definitely have been more saleable with Aish and Aamir in it. Both being well known in the western world. With Aish gone, I don't think the film release will generate the same publicity.

What do you think??

Utlimately it will be the script/story that will sell....it helps to have stars, but is never always enough on its own....Rai is too small a player in the international circuit to make any kind of impact....even if Bride and Prejudice is a whopper hit, it will be more because of Gurinder Chadha's skills as an ace adapter of a largely Victorian tale to the present day milieu. Look at Parminder Nagra, though she played the lead character in Bend It Like Beckham, it is Keira <whatever_her_last_name> that's landing meaty roles.....Rai's part in 'The Rising' is inconsequential IMHO, since she is in any case low in the histrionics department. Had Aamir bowed out, it would have been a slightly different story.

err....what makes you think that's a lead role? its just another character role at best....and its on television - yeah national TV, yet TV! But look at Keira Knightley....she was the female lead of 'Pirates of the Caribbean' (a feature) and now appears in 'Love Actually' with the likes of Hugh Grant....that is by far ARRIVING in my book ! In any case we digress from the main topic....heroines from the subcontinent have a long way to go before making any difference to the BO impact of a Hollywood mainstream movie...

Yeah Kiera Knightly was far more successful than Nagra, as she has broken into Hollywood and this is mainly because she is better looking and white (more acceptance for mainstream roles). Also she started was popular slightly before Nagra with featue film like the Hole. With South Asians, directors don't know what role to give them if in a Hollywood film other than a doctor or corner shop owner. Plus they would risk making a flop if they cast a South Asian in a lead role in a Hollywood film as not many would go to see it. Remember Short circuit they had to get a white guy to play the indian scientist, remember Gandhi with Ben Kingsley who people didn't know was half-indian. The only other indian i can remember was Amrish Puri in Temple of Doom...and of course it had to be the bad guy.

As for the rising it will be a hit without Aish as it's more an 'Aamir Khan film' and alot of hype has been generated about it. I actually prefer Aish not to be in it, but I don't think much of Amisha Patel, couldn't they get anyone better?

Aishwarya!! SOLO..without big names is a FLOP ACTRESS!!

AAMIR/AISH..would have been FRESH PAIRING!!(BTW!! AAMIR never acted as HERO opposite KAJOL either)

But, Rani, or any one, in NON WOMAN ORIENTED film..will work, if other MASALAs are CORRECTLY CONCOCTED!!

Amisha..did FINE in GADAR!! So, might work here too..if they dont give her DIOLOGUES to be delivred in HYSTERIA!!

I don't know what Aish is thinking. Did she not see Lagaan and the success it had. While it's a shame that she has dropped out, but the film was never going to be sold as a Aishwarya Rai film. 20th Century Fox will market the film as a Aamir Khan film, the guy behind the Oscar Nominated Lagaan.

But why on earth has Amisha Patel been drafted in, I hated her guts. Was there nobody else around.

Can somebody clear up something for me

Prince Charles visited the set 2 weeks ago, but I've been lead to believe the actual shooting hasn't started but will do so on the 9th of January. Is this correct :hmm:

By now it’s yesterday’s news that Amisha Patel is the new star to have replaced Aishwarya Rai in the Aamir Khan mega film ‘The Rising’. And much has been said on the topic by the producer (Bobby Bedi), Aamir and Amisha. But here we contact the petite Ms Patel to shed a little more light on the controversy and what went on behind the scenes between her and the unit of the prestigious project.

Catch Amisha unplugged on her ‘rising’ stars.

Congratulations, Amisha! How does it feel being roped in for Ketan Mehta’s ‘The Rising’?

Amisha: “It feels like I am ‘rising’. Working with Aamir is like a dream come true. I’ve been his fan ever since I saw his first film, and now I am getting an opportunity to work with him in a period film. I am thrilled. After ‘Gadar’, this is my second period film. What makes this exciting is the new techniques, sync sound, foreign crew and foreign actors in this project. And, of course, the fact that the film is being made in Hindi and English gives it that cutting edge.”

What do you think of Aamir Khan as an actor?

Amisha: “I think Aamir is absolutely brilliant and one of the best we have.”

But don’t you think Aishwarya’s sudden exit and your surprise entry in this film will cause bad blood between Ash and you?

Amisha: “No, I don’t think so. I am not doing the film as a vindictive move to replace Aishwarya. Besides, I think she is an individual artiste and is aware of what is happening. At the onset there were three girls short-listed for the project – Aishwarya, Rani and me. So I guess it was destined to happen, and that’s just what happened. I think Aishwarya is mature enough not to feel bad about it.”

With this film falling into your plate without prior alarm, won’t it be a hassle to allot dates for it?

Amisha: “Well, fortunately for me in this past year I had made a solid decision to do little work, and do only what I really like. As a result, my dates have fit in like a glove. And I have some good well-wishers in my producers, so the overlap dates have been toggled somehow. Especially Ratan Jain of Venus Films – he has been so cooperative and accommodating that he has promised to adjust the dates of his film. Thankfully, everybody I am working with wants me to do this film. I am really lucky!”

When do you start shooting for the film?

Amisha: “In January. The film is in two schedules; it will be complete by May.”

Did this come as a total surprise to you, or did you get feelers before the offer actually came by?

Amisha: “No, I didn’t get any feelers at all. In fact, I was completely unprepared for it. I didn’t even know I was one of the initial choices for the film. So I was caught by surprise when I got the offer. I hope more such pleasant surprises come my way.”

We spoke to Aamir and he tells us that there were some terms of disagreement between the producer, Bobby Bedi, and Aishwarya, hence she opted out of the project. Is this Aamir’s way of protecting his new co-star?

Amisha: “I am not in tune with all the events and activities of ‘The Rising’ team before I was signed on. Aamir called me to explain the role they were offering me and, believe me, all we discussed was the script…script and the script. You know how professional Aamir is, he is not someone who will spare time for politics, and even I follow the same rules in my profession - that makes it two of us, so I am sure we will get along well.”

What do the astrologers have to say about Amisha’s new ‘stars’? Are they ‘rising’?

Amisha: “Well, I haven’t consulted any astrologers, but I think the ‘rising’ is inevitable.”

On this note let me share a little trivia here.....I believe it was Prince Charles' mother that was the honorable guest at the launch/inaugural shot of another ambitious period film plannned by Kamalhaasan titled MARUDANAYAGAM....unfortunately the film has now been shelved due to various financial difficulties...touted at one time as one of the most expensive films of all times, its a pity such a fate came to befall it....hopefully the son brings better luck to THE RISING :p , no?

PS: With THE RISING now taking off and THE INVADERS parked someplace temporarily and MARUDANAYAGAN shelved, we have three movies, all of which claim that theirs is the actual depiction of the first war of independance.....

MARUDANAYAGAN was one motion picture I was looking forward too.

But with The Rising I look forward to watching Aamir Khan, yet being a Keten Metha film I doubt it would be a great film. The only film I enjoyed of his was Hero Hiralal, and that was made over 10 years ago!! Since then he has directed poor and dull films. Here's hoping Aamir Khan helps him out the way N. Shah did on HH.

Aish's explaination..GIVE ME A BREAK: MAN!! :nopity:

AISH: BOBBY BEDI HAS BEEN UNFAIR

By Our Staff

In The News

Bollywood's heartthrob Aishwarya Rai was shocked with the statement of Bobby Bedi, director of 'The Rising'. This is to recall that last week Aishwarya's agency William Morris and Co. informed the media about the exit of Aishwarya Rai from Bobby Bedi's 'The Rising'. According to William Morris and Co, Aishwarya met with director last year in November. The director narrated the storyline to her and Aish sought changes in her character role. Aish agreed to do the film but expressed her desire to read the revised script. She had agreed to participate in the film on mutually accepted and agreed terms and conditions.

Since she neither got the revised script nor any other document related to this, and nor any reply from Bedi to her email, her office returned the deposit to Bobby Bedi on October 17, 2003. But suddenly with the arrival of Prince Charles to visit Mumbai for muhurt shot of the film, Bedi started calling Aish to show-up for his visit. However, there was no deal and Aish was away, so she could not attend the muhurt, according to Aish agents. Meanwhile Aish had got very busy because of her higher status in international circles. Moreover, 'The Rising' too rose to an international level project. Similarly, Ash' s price moved higher than that of a year ago when she had accepted Bedi's offer.

The agents of Aish claim that Bobby Bedi started having financial trouble, and the latter had no more upfront money to pay for Aish fee. Later, the behaviour and statements of Bedi were unfair towards Aish. The agency referred to Bedi's statement to the media and described it "childish" .Aish is happy that Amisha will act in that film now, and she wishes her to do a wonderful job, the agency added.
