Malgudi Days on screen again
The production house, which made the highly-acclaimed Malgudi Days television serial series in the 1980s will produce the full -length feature film, The Man eater of Malgudi.
It will also produce tele-series telling the story where the late Shankar Nag directed serial had left off. "The screenplay was approved by R K Narayan in 1993. But when Shankar Nag passed away, I had to look for another director," said T S Narsimhan, film producer.
Shankar as director is a tough act to follow, but young Kannada film Director Kavita Lankesh is looking forward to the challenge.
"Any comparisons with the late director actually pushes me to do better. I will stick to the narrative style almost the same way, but the way of saying it may be different. He created a lot of nostalgia, we have to keep that and simultaneously pace it up a bit to cater to the MTV generation," said Lankesh.
The screenplay was written by Shankar's brother, Anant Nag, who has been involved with script writing from his theatre days.
"It was I who forced Shankar to take it up. The world of serials is a different one all-together and it brought him lot of laurels nationally and internationally. When Shankar died in '90 we were all stunned for a while, but then Narasimhan suggested this. I did the screenplay and Narayan appreciated it," said Anant.
Malgudi will be recreated in Agumbe in the Western Ghats. The television episodes and the film are scheduled to be completed by October this year.
Does anyone know if the original TV serial is available on VHS, DVD, anything?
