Ong Bak: Muay Thai Warrior is a Thai movie that was premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last year and left the audience stunned with its on screen wizadry, and ended up being the only movie at the festival to end with a standing ovation... It is a movie that is beyond the norm, the censor boards would love to butcher and most of all reminds you of your child hood crazy with violent martial arts movies...
The story revolves around the character of Tim - played by a nobody in the international film scene - Phanom Yeerum.. Living in the small village of Ban Nong Pradoo, there is great emphasis to the statue of Ong Bak.. a spiritual statue which everyone turns to at the time of need... However, one of the younger villagers who has spent all his life living in the city life realises that there is money to be made from the statue... The Ong Bak head is stolen and the villagers are left at their own peril.. especially without the figure of Ong Bak.. Tim, a Thai Boxing student has recently completed his training from a renowned monk and pledges to bring back the Ong Bak head back to the village to save the village from all evil... at the same time he promises his monk tutor not to use his Thai Boxing skills for any monetry gain ...
This is where his journey begins and leads him to the seedy underground of the city life... There, he meets up with Hum-Lae (Petchtai Wongkamlao) and Muey (Pumwaree Yodkamol), who take him for any other village peasent... As Hum-Lae and Muey have spent most of their life scrounging of the streets, the two of them are debt ridden and have many debts to repay, especially to the violent drug barrons of the city... Hum-Lae a theif steals Tims money and puts it on a bet at a Thai Boxing match.. needless to say he loses Tims money.. when Tim learns of this, he decides to get his money back.. instead he finds himself breaking his monks promise and ends up in the ring with the local thai boxing champion... From this moment on, Tim stumbles across nasty gangsters, drug dealers and international smuggling gangs who try and stop him achieving his goal.. bringing back the Ong Bak to Ban Nong Pradoo..
The movie kicks into action and from here on there is nonstop action... precisely choreographed fight sequences, no strings attached, no CGI.. just sheer fight sequences which leave you in shock... It is hard to remember the last time I saw such a violent movie like this... This isnt no kickboxer or bloodsport.. tell you the truth it isnt not tongue-in-cheek Jet Li or Jackie Chan movie.. this is hand to hand combat fighting.. limbs are snapped, skulls are cracked open, splits under cars, high jumps over moving cars.. the list is endless.. i have never in my life seen such excellent fight scenes in any movie.. it is just amazing... The movie grabs you from the beginning and takes you on a roller coaster ride for the next 2 hours.. NON STOP.. forget the irritaing Thai language, this is a movie that you can enjoy and begin to love as it progresses...
Ong Bak: Muay Thai Warrior, is in a league of its own.. no movie has reached the heights this movie ever has.. you need to watch it to believe it.. Tell you the truth, it will be amazing to see if this movie ever sees a general release in the UK and if it ever does, then surely it will be cut up by the censor boards that the whole jist of the movie will be destroyed... there are many places where you can possibly "aquire" this movie, and I recommend you do... if Martial Arts is your thing... you will love this.. and even if it isnt, you will most definately appreciate this.... Do not compare this to any other Martial Arts movie.. they all seem like Mickey Mouse compared to this.. this is the mother of all Martial Arts Movie...
Definately a movie not to be missed.. Watch it now!!
